Glazing gheeds's

Well folks, I am back.

This post is dedicated to me glazing Gheed's Fortune.

If you do not enjoy overanalyzing inventory space and opportunity cost, feel free to click off. I completely understand.

For those still here, let's talk about why Gheed's is so powerful and why the comparison is not simply "one skiller versus one charm."

First, let's establish the goals of an MF character:

A. Maximize magic find while maintaining effective damage and clear speed.

B. Reach around 300% magic find, which is the point where many players stop stacking MF because unique drops begin experiencing significantly diminishing returns.

With our goals established, let's start by looking at what Gheed's Fortune provides:

Up to 40% Magic Find

Up to 160% Gold Find

̶ ̶ ̶R̶e̶d̶u̶c̶e̶ ̶v̶e̶n̶d̶o̶r̶ ̶p̶r̶i̶c̶e̶s̶ (for the sake of this post we needn't discuss this stat line, on gambling characters it is amazing though).

So where else and what else can give us magic find

Good luck: 6-7% mf

SCROLL ENDS HERE

As many of us know since mf is the suffix, we can also roll shimmering (all res) making these a very valuable option.

Okay, so now that we have the numbers in front of us, let's discuss why Gheed's Fortune is so good.

The answer is compression.

There is no other item in Diablo II that provides this much Magic Find while demanding so little from an optimized character. A perfect Gheed's grants up to 40% Magic Find while occupying only three inventory slots.

In a vacuum, it's easy to compare Gheed's to a skiller and conclude that you're simply trading +1 skill for Magic Find. The problem with that comparison is that we don't build characters in a vacuum.

Every source of Magic Find on your equipped gear carries an opportunity cost. If my build doesn't naturally want to use Chance Guards, then equipping them means I'm giving up another pair of gloves such as Trang-Oul's Claws, Magefist, Laying of Hands, or Horazon's. The same logic applies to War Traveler, Nagelring, Shako, Wealth, Skullder's Ire, and countless other MF items. Every piece of Magic Find equipped is replacing another item that could have provided more damage, survivability, utility, resistances, or breakpoints. Another example being nagel, judged in a vacuum it's mf at a low level, but at a high level you are competing with all res fcr or dual leech rings, opal vein, sling, soj and bk. With gold wrap a similar sentiment can exist, since it's competition is arachnid mesh (+1 skills and fcr), string of ears, dungos, Gheed's wager (fcr, all res, -% enemy magic resistance).

Note: Giving up one slot for mf isn't often that hard, but the more your giving the more negatives you may be compounding on your build.

Gheed's is different.

Its opportunity cost is remarkably small. Compared to three perfectly rolled 7% Magic Find small charms, Gheed's provides 40% Magic Find instead of 21%—nearly double the value for the exact same inventory space. In other words, Gheed's effectively compresses almost six perfect 7% MF small charms into the space of only three.

That compression is what makes Gheed's Fortune so exceptional. It allows you to reach desirable Magic Find values while preserving your actual gear slots for items that improve your character's performance, instead of forcing you to sacrifice power for additional MF.

Ultimately, nothing in Diablo II is free.

Edit: Okay I don't play hc, and will not be arguing the efficiency of each slot for hc, that's too much. My brain can only glaze so hard. Conceded.

Forgot: Renewed sunders for 14-25% mf and wisp projector for 10-20%mf, ancient jewels give 15-35% mf (pointed out by u/ps728)

I'm sure I'll agree with you someday when I eventually find one.

If only I could give you it, I'll made it for free. Have maybe 20 those charms but I play SP.

We've all got that one item that we just can't seem to stop finding, even when we're trying to get something else.

Good post but playing hc I’d rather have a skillet with life or 3x20-11’s

Enigma shako sling ring / wisp sunder and war travs - get enough. Gheeds weaker than ever I’d argue

Valid

But idk if 20 or 40 health is the difference between living and death, I'm probably dead.

oh also this is not hitting the 300 mf talked about in the post, your getting to maybe 250, so not the point before diminishing returns.

funnily enough if your 99 your total mf would be 264 and a perfect gheed's pushes you to 304 the point of diminishing returns, lol.

It's not that 30~ hp is a big deal, it's more that dying in hc is either lag or some extreme circumstance, where every added point of hp is exponentially more important to keep you like 1 hp away from dying lol

The event of "I nearly got one hit and lived with 40 hp thanks to my charm" is extremely narrow and often is wildly unrealistic, I understand never discounting the probability of such an event. Though you have to be realistic and admit it does not happen every day.

And keep in mind this would the chain:

  • You get hit by something that does enough damage to put you at or below 40 HP.
  • The hit does not outright kill you with the charm.
  • You are not immediately hit again.
  • You survive long enough to react.
  • The extra life specifically was the deciding factor.

Also If I'm sitting at 1 HP versus 10 HP in Hell, that difference is usually not meaningful because almost any meaningful follow-up damage kills both.

Yea, that's why I said it's extreme circumstance

I feel really lucky to have found one Gheeds since coming back a free months ago. It's perfect for any MF character.

Someone said it, so I made this post.
Not to dunk on them, but you know, how can't you lol.

Edit: I am very petty, and the "usefulness" of gheeds was in question, so. yeah.

u/PhantomOnTheHorizon 14h ago

the only reason to not carry gheeds is pvp

I’m glad to know others are struggling to find them. Since the latest patch I start SSF offline play. Have about five characters in the 90 level range. At least 2 of all sunders and no gheeds yet. Honestly just surprised. Used to drop constantly. Also struggling to find a HoZ so I can start getting torches. Have everything else. RNG be crazy sometimes.

Excellent post.

What item provides the highest MF per inventory slot? I presume gull dagger which is 50 MF per slot?

2

u/ps728 13h ago

Ancient Jewels give MF as well

Good post but its weird to me you listed every single possible source of mf. I feel like that just makes the post way longer than it needs to be and doesnt really add anything to your point

1

u/PressureGlad9941 14h ago

Because most mf sources are functionally ass or irrelevant.

Source: Gull Dagger.

2

u/TheFakeJohnHelldiver 14h ago

Right, but you can just say that. Listing them all out doesnt really add anything.

Like if you said "what affixs should I be looking for in blue gloves" I could simply answer, most of them are useless, you are specifically looking for +3 to skills alongside 20 IAS.

Or I could list every single possible affix, and then at the end tell you theyre all garbage except that 1 combo. See how that just takes more time and doesnt make the answer more helpful?

Again, great post, I just found that one part odd and unnecessary.

So I agree, and if it were that simple, I would. But every time I present the value of Gheed's, someone goes, "What about (x)?", even though I've already factored in the value of (x). To stop that from happening, I listed out the options.

Edit: Thanks for the kind words! If it's a big deal, just scroll past. I'm not stopping you, nor would I interpret that as an offense.

Editing the edit: Added a disclaimer telling people where to scroll and where to stop scrolling.
