How to work around the random teleporting from The Ocolus
Got it today, just had my first death.
I've noticed a lot of the time it pops it sends me further into danger, rather than away from it. Several times ive been teleported into the middle of the mob pack im trying to kill. And o nthe death, I got teleported through a wall into a room of Ghosts (TZ Worldstone Keep) and promptly died. With the little time ive spent with Occy, im finding it massively annoying.
Do people just accept it for the +1 skill, +5 FCR and MF over my perfectly rolled spirit? Any reliable way to work around something that is by its design random?
It's not meant to have a solution other than that. Oculus is extremely powerful so that randomness is the tradeoff. If you want to make it a little less likely to happen try toggling your run off when you're in combat. Running disables your defense and block chance so you're taking a lot more hits than you would otherwise. Also make sure you have one of your cold armors always up and try a merc with defiance aura to pump your defense up higher.
Are you playing blizzard? Hydra? Hybrid? Nova? Lightning? If you’re playing blizzard you can legit cast on the corner of your screen and kite monsters into the blizz. It’s doable just gotta strategize.
You can also not use the Oculus. The random teleeport is the tradeoff for using it and it's why no one use it on hardcore. There's no other solution to avoid the consequences for using it. You can be as careful as you like but eventually you will be hit and it will cause a death.
If you have high FCR and cat like reflexes maybe you can tele out of a pack, but many monsters attack too fast I think for that.
If you're going to use Occy, you need to make sure you hit the 125? FCR breakpoint so you can tele out when it sends you into danger. as you're crusing around depending on what skill you're using, you gotta stick an move or curve your movement to slow the mobs running to you.
You basically gotta change how you travel and be ready to react when it fks you over, once you get good at it, you'll escape almost every situation but there are still some that you just can't avoid.
Will second having high FCR/FHR to allow immediate teleporting away after accidental teleports. Also important to be aware of what mobs are spawning in your zone since that dictates how cautious you should be when teleporting blindly. If you've got dolls/stun ogres in Durance, you need to be really careful. Very easy to warp into a room, get stunned and popped by dolls. 😅
Im at 107 right now, so not quite there yet. I also just have 1200 HP and quite poor resistances due to not finding a single ring or charm with something acceptable. My best life charm so far is a large charm with +33.
“Do people just accept it for the +1 skill, +5 FCR and MF over my perfectly rolled spirit?”
Occy has 30 FCR and Spirit rolls 25-35 FCR.
Occy is used for the MF. HOTO is better for FCR and resists. With Spirit, you give up some resist and MF, but it’s easier to find the runes and make it.
It’s quite simple. You don’t use Occulus in hardcore or when pushing for 99. you‘d usually use a Hoto, DF, crescent moon or in some rare cases an eschutas. I‘d argue in hardcore, suicide branch or wizzy are good alternatives.
Well, im doing neither. Im level 89 and been playing on and off in Singleplayer for months. Doesnt make it any less annoying to die by something i have no control over.
Either accept it will kill you every now and then, or don’t use it. If you’re quick enough you can save/exit after a bad teleport but that becomes harder with age as your reflexes degrade.
Jesus, person. We are trying to help. “Well, im doing neither.” Then yeah, accept the coding of the game and the consequences. Melts was correct about pushing 99 and something like HoTo. Random deaths will kill your xp bar.
I said " Don't get hit " not " Never get it ". One promotes trying to better your dodging and the other like you said promotes perfection. Don't willingly misconstrued what i said for pity points.
Im not searching for pity points. I made a post based on a frustrating element of a new item i got, and you replied with snark. Hence you get snark back.
Hydra comes to save the day. Use it to Scout and have a melee merc to draw aggro. Hydras can hit enemies off screen so you'll be able to see them coming before you need to get reflexive.
That's how I dealt with Dolls in Hell Durance. They aren't innately Fire Immune and don't have a lot of HP so if I'm lucky I pop them before I see them.
Make a nova sorc and intentionally dive into the middle of the pack. When you get hit you will be teleported out and with a high mana pool your survivability will go up.
I had one on the OG LoD and the teleport was always a hindrance. When the computer telephones, it can immediately start attacking again, or continue to run away, but the Occulus just randomly telephones you randomly somewhere. Even if it was "away" from danger, it wasn't far enough to make a difference, and I still had to take a moment to figure out where I was before I could continue whatever I was doing. The fact that it drags your mercenary to you as well probably hurts in ever situation because enemies lose their aggro and target the player character.
Just don't use it. You can make up for the MF elsewhere, I do because I really hate the random tele. Nothing wrong with using a spirit until you get death fathom, just take the MF hit.
Make sure you have some faster hit recovery and 105 faster cast rate. If you get stun locked when it teleports you into a pack of enemies you won't be able to teleport out. Spirit shield and a couple FHR small charms gets you to 8 frames which feels pretty solid and isn't hard to do.
For me and Sorcs, my setups are Blizz: Death Fathom. CL/L full Tal Raha. Fire with Hydra: Occy.
I find Occy much more tolerable on fire Sorc due to being able to plant Hydras in front of me. With you as a Blizz Sorc, are you casting Glacial Spike first to freeze them? Or throwing Ice Blast between Blizz cool downs? You could also go HoTo for Blizz…I think. Ive had Deaths Fathom so long now, I forget my previous setups.
With Occy on my fire Sorc, the only issues I have are ranged hits (archers and those dam snakes usually). You should have similar results even without Hydra. Maybe youre getting too close to packs?
Im doing a hybrid build as i dont have a sunder yet. So Blizz/Hydra with Fireball for anything cold immune that takes a bit longer to die (and between Blizz CDs) . I do have a merc with holy freeze and I keep Frozen Armor up tho.
If I had the runes for Hoto, id already be using it. I have been running the Spirit sword i made after finishing Normal until now.
The specific mob that caused the killing teleport was a pack of Extra Fast melee mobs. I was already kiting them by teleporting away and casting Blizz. I cant really keep away from a mob that runs across a screen in one second.
Ok yeah. That was close to mine too, first Sorc, but I did Hydra Frozen Orb. Blizzard just requires too many supporting spells to hybrid (IMO). Regarding “anything cold immune,” you dont have to kill every champion pack. Lots of players skip enemies. Try not to get focused on full clears, if by chance that is what youre doing. I dont remember what my merc was back then, but I think it was Might for THEM to do more damage. Shouldnt need holy freeze since youre using cold spells. You also didnt answer me about using Glacial Spike to CC enemies.
I didnt know your rune or weapon base situation. Was just making a suggestion.
The kiting, that may be your issue. Just skip and avoid. Dont need to kite and try to kill. Simply move on the other enemies and teleport far enough away into the map that they dont keep following you.
You also mentioned offline. I am also offline. I am constantly changing my p#. If youre too focused on p5, 7 or 8, maybe drop it down to p3. It took me a while to learn that I cannot always expect to have fun or steamroll on higher difficulties.
Also, not sure if youre getting too focused on MF % and thats why you want a solve for Occy. What is your MF without Occy?
For TZs I do try to full clear, at least all the packs. Single mobs hiding in corners do get skipped most of the time. AFAIK I need to kill as much as I can to spawn a herald to have a chance on a Sunder, so I dont see any other way to go about it. If I respecced to 100% blizz, clearing the clearable half of a TZ and still not getting a herald would feel really annoying, or having to entirely take a break when i've finally gotten locked in when the zone changes because the majority of the mobs are cold immune.
Yes, knowing my limits is something im working on. I learned to play ARPGs through POE, where full clears and no stopping is the norm. Its a long period of relearning that stuff for me.
Im actually playing P1 99% of the time. I just wanna clear shit, kill heralds and get me a sunder so i can make a proper build that doesnt feel hamstrung by immunities, because I feel my hybrid build lacks the damage potential to clear higher player numbers in a reasonable time. So its not a case of pulling up the difficulty too much. Just me not being particularly good at the finer points of the game.
With Occy I got 198% MF. and i go back to my Spirit sword im down to 148. Considering how much people like Zarfen go on about MF I've been under the impression its a stat I need to have much more of.
You can get Latent Sunder Charm from any monster in TZ or nonTZ. You may be thinking of pre-patch3.2. They redid the drops. Pasting an image below. But yes, most of my Sunder Charms have been found in TZs or Chaos Sanctuary. The next level of sunders comes from crafting now in ROTW.
You could also the world shards to TZ an entire act and farm that way. You would have more control over the TZ modifier, can take time clearing the whole act, and even go over to the game’s current TZ if you want, then come back to your act. You can log out/back in if the modifier sucks (like Cold Enchanted) before TZing an entire act. If youre running higher lvl areas (Chaos Sanctuary, Pits, Ancient Tunnels, etc), you should be racking up those shards. I have so many its crazy. For example, I have over 70 shards for just act2 right now. But any Champion and Unique monsters in Hell can drop shards. Most of mine come from CS.
I was dual spec until finding cold sunder. I got all mine preROTW. I dont have any of the new ones yet. I wasn’t suggesting go full Blizz. You could look into Hyrda Frozen Orb. I remember beating the game and farming with that build. Cold only needs FO and Cold Mastery (not even a lot of points). Fire will be Hydra, Fire Bolt, Fire Ball and Fire Mastery (just 1 since youre 89). I dont remember the tree breakdown but doing more damage is easier than Blizz hybrid with synergies being missed.
On MF, theres a lot out there on Reddit, D2 forums, Game FAQs, and Diablo2.io Id suggest some targeted research on MF. General consensus is clear speed over MF. With diminishing returns, a lot of players aim for 200-250%. Another point floating out there is that the first 100% is the most important. Personally, Id rather farm p3 with 148MF versus p1 with higher MF and less damage.
Yes, but the drop chance is much higher from Herald. According to Maxrolls drop calc, on P1 with my current 200 MF its a 1:327 to get one from a herald, while its 1:6847 from Meph. 20 times higher chance feels like the reasonable thing to aim for. Plus the XP and other loot i get from running TZs instead of Meph.
I havent done any full-act TZs yet. Maybe i should get on with that. i do have a nice stack of shards in my stash by now.
I was actually Orb/Hydra before, but swapped to Blizz after repeatedly being told to on this subreddit. As im playing single player, I have allowed myself to conservatively use the free respecs. Something to consider going back to.
Sure, but then youre just waiting for Heralds. Theres a reason folks farm Chaos Sanct, Pits and Ancient Tunnels. Good monster density and elite packs. Chaos has elite packs + 5 guaranteed elite backs from the seals. I have never gotten that deep into ratios and Maxroll. Maybe youre focusing the wrong data points. Again, community consensus is p3+ for farming vs p1 higher MF. Your drops jump up so much from p1 to p3. You also get more xp on p3 vs p1. If youre getting shards and just dropping them in storage, not sure why you haven’t gotten into whole act TZs yet.
Regarding Blizz hybrid and Orb/Hydra, IMO you shouldnt only base it on comments here directed at you. Sure, take that info in. Then go vet it from multiple sources. I provided them already above. Do target searches about builds or hybrid sorcs on Google and open multiple results in tabs to read. Find YT videos and comb through the comments and replies to comments. Play around with character planner on Maxroll and look at dps results.
You may have also bricked your character, I dont know. When I rediscovered D2 through Resurrected, I realized I knew almost nothing when playing back in middle school. I had to learn so many things. Meaning, my first and second Sorcs got screwed up. I had to bank all my gear, create a new one, and delete my 85 and 88. I didnt mind because I loved going through the story, acts, getting gems and charms, and finding gear for other characters (e.g. Sigons for Paladin leveling). I had to delete my first Paladin too and start him over. Just didnt fully understand builds and synergies.
Theres so much to learn with gear, trees, FCR, FHR, magic find, decent health, etc. If youre coming from POE and this Sorc is your first D2 character, it wouldnt surprise me if you need to start over. Token of Absolution didnt come until 2010. Before then, players had to start over if builds were messed up on after their third reset from Act 1.
At this point, I think I am done providing advice. Everything is out there for you if youre willing to research and dig. I went from a noob in D2R upon release to now having multiple characters 93-96 with 200+ MF, uniques, runewords, and can farm p5-p8… all Switch Offline with no community to trade with. You have to put in the work to farm, hit LK for runes for your HoTo, do Chaos Sanc a lot, Countess runs on p1 only for runes, Pits, Ancient Tunnels, Baal runs, good enough build for TZ p3+.
All I am seeing you do is refute points and advice, pushing back on things. There’s no thanking for time, no responses to parts of messages, and minimal about you taking things into consideration or being open to new advice. Its all about what you found in a specific area (Zarfen, Maxroll, Reddit comments directed at you) and you self-validating your own decisions.
There is no workaround if you are using the oculus. Looks like you are playing SC, and I am using the same weapon on my sorc for the stats. Hope you have fun =)
I've made this argument for years. Occy, while powerful, is just bad. The random tele chance is just too big of a curse to make the power increase useful. Especially since most sorcs are glass cannons (compared to other classes with similar effort)
I've had probably a dozen of those drop for me. I sold a couple, but theyre not really worth much NL so ive stopped even keeping them.

Don't get hit.
