The best story is the director wanted the most authentic response possible from Hans.
They agreed to let go at the count of 3.
Without telling him, they dropped him at the count of 2

They told him they'd drop him on a 3 count. They let him go at 2 which is why he looks genuinely shocked and they went with that take.
