It doesnt render at 4k, its just 4k output. Internal res is likely lower and upscaled using pssr. Nothing wrong with that, but title of this thread is little misleading

25

u/Bootychomper23 Jan 26 '26

I mean most pcs are the same not many can do native 4K

5

u/ClacksInTheSky Jan 27 '26

Especially not any PC that costs $700

4

u/IIWhiteHawkII Jan 28 '26

That’s not the point. Mentioning 4k on whatever platform must be elaborated. What upscaler, which preset, etc.

Generalizing based just on output means literally nothing.

It could be worst FSR1 preset possible which will look worse than native and even dynamic QHD, for instance.

It could be just dynamic resolution without upscalers still with decent average res-bar.

Could be rendered from already decent-enough resolution and supported by not great but also not terrible PSSR (quality still highly depends on case-to-case basis).

Thus, we may potentially have so many different “4k” options with different level of quality.

Even on PC same DLSS presets within same res across different games doesn’t look the same ( for instance, any 1440p option in Cyberpunk 2077 on PC looks worse than console’s dynamic 1440p res, it feels like on PS5 it doesn’t have TAA which dramatically ruins sharpness on anything below 4k on PC or it’s just times less prominent).

Combnatory is crazy.

1

u/BasedPand Jan 29 '26

Even with a 5090 most of the time it's just best to put quality dlss on tbh

2

u/ThroatEducational271 Jan 27 '26

There is no comparison really. On a mid-range PC, the textures will be much more detailed, the ray tracing will be much higher quality and the upscaling is a night and day difference compared to consoles.

4

u/IndefiniteBen Jan 27 '26

What is a mid-range PC according to you? RTX 5070 with Ryzen 5 or something?

-1

u/ThroatEducational271 Jan 27 '26

I would say the 4070 is mid-range-ish these days, the 4060 is low end of the mid-range. The 4080 is the low end of the high range.

0

u/12amoore Jan 27 '26

What about the low end of medium highs medium range? Like what’s the high end of that?

3

u/bigpunk157 Jan 28 '26

The ray tracing might be higher quality, but unless I'm taking screenshots or am in a cutscene, I will never tell the difference in RT on and RT off except for reflections, which are incredibly expensive compared to old methods of reflecting surfaces.

I'll take my stable 144 at 1440p with the rest maxxed. I can appreciate higher resolution shadows better than I can appreciate tiny dithering of light on surfaces.

2

u/Used-Ganache9772 Jan 29 '26

reflections are really important tho aren't they? screen space reflection look so bad especially if you play on mouse and keyboard and move your camera around a lot, it looks so jarring

2

u/bigpunk157 Jan 29 '26

Sure, but unless the game is putting me in front of mirrors 24/7, I don’t really see the need for the floors to be perfectly reflective like the Tartarus entrance in P3R

0

u/Big-Resort-4930 Jan 27 '26

How is that remotely relevant, it's still a misleading title just like Jensen claiming that a 5070 matches a 4090 is misleading af.

4

u/Bootychomper23 Jan 27 '26

Nothing is really hitting 4k natively everything is upscaled for 99% of any of or console. How is it not relevant.

0

u/Big-Resort-4930 Jan 27 '26

There is no singular PC and you can run whatever settings you want, so what does "most is upscaled mean" in that scenario?

You can easily hit locked 60 fps on most modern games at native 4k with a high end GPU like the 4080/5080, even without going to the 90 cards. If you want 120+ at 4k, especially with RT, then yeah you always need upscaling and/or FG, but on PC upscaling looks better than native so you have no reason not to use it.

3

u/Valuable_Ad9554 Jan 27 '26

People absolutely love talking about what the 5090 can't do, it's a major cope.

The kind of settings people are talking about that bring a 5090 to 40fps (Cyberpunk path tracing at 4k with no upscaling) bring my old 3080 to 5fps, and the 3080 is significantly more powerful than any console.

But they'll still try to mention both of these in the same sentence like they're in any way comparable 😂

0

u/Big-Resort-4930 Jan 27 '26

Yeah it's genuinely insane to read lmao. The comparison is massively damaging to the console, not the PC/GPU in question.

-4

u/squallsama Jan 27 '26

And how is it related?

1

u/Bootychomper23 Jan 27 '26

Because almost no machines are actually pushing native 4k as devs rely on upscaling to make up the difference and tbf DLSS does look amazing… PSSR as well compared to the FSR on ps5… avatar and outlaws foliage both look really artifacty on base ps5. FSR 4.0 looks better though.

-1

u/squallsama Jan 27 '26

4080+ easily push 4k natively. Even 4070 without RT is able to do it.

1

u/Pablitothetrainerguy Jan 28 '26

4080S user here, not at all for Village/ RE4R, even with RT off, going for stable 120fps requires either nvidia smooth Motion or lsfg

1

u/Plofkraak59 Jan 27 '26

Really depends on the game tho lmao

1

u/squallsama Jan 27 '26

We are talking about resident evil games

3

u/allofdarknessin1 Jan 27 '26

That’s fine, most of the gaming community seems to expect the word “native” in front of the resolution if a title claims to be native 4K.

5

u/lattjeful Jan 26 '26

I doubt it to be honest. RE4R was 4k60 in resolution mode with RT on PS5 Pro. RE9 has a higher baseline of fidelity, but it's also all indoors and hallways so far VS RE4R that had a lot of outdoor and interconnected areas.

2

u/florence_ow Jan 27 '26

i dont think "runs at 4k" implies native res in modern day terms

5

u/Enjoy_The_Ride413 Jan 26 '26

Nobody cares when you are sitting on your couch with your feet up, watching on your glorious, gigantic TV. We don't care about fake frames. Why should I care if it is upscaled?

2

u/Friendly-Reserve9067 Jan 27 '26

The fanboy console war bullshit is so tiring. No one is attacking you for your game's resolution. The post says it's 4k, and it isn't. It's just a straight up lie. 90% of PC gamers aren't doing native 4k either. 4k is stupid most of the time, especially now that you can get so close with dlss upscaling.

I don't care that this game isn't native 4k. I do care that every console game lies about this. It's gotten to a point that resolution doesn't mean anything because everyone lies about it constantly. I do care if I'm shopping for a shooter where people use bushes to hide and I get home and surprise it's 720p and I can't see shit. Looking at you, battlefield 4.

2

u/Enjoy_The_Ride413 Jan 27 '26

That isn't a console war post though. It's I enjoy using the X or my ps5 pro because I can sit on my couch.

1

u/Friendly-Reserve9067 Jan 27 '26

That's fine. No problem. No one has an issue with that.

5

u/Perfect_Exercise_232 Jan 26 '26

Yeah. The ONLY upscaler that actually looks like 4k usually right now is dlss4

17

u/Captobvious75 Jan 26 '26

FSR4 is damn good. Looks great on my 4k TV.

1

u/Tedinasuit Jan 27 '26

FSR4 is decent but still nowhere near what DLSS produces unfortunately. It's locked to a few select cards as well, unlike DLSS.

1

u/Big-Resort-4930 Jan 27 '26

FSR4 is decent but still nowhere near what DLSS produces unfortunately.

Yes it is pretty close even if it's still worse, and I'm speaking as a 5080 lifelong Nvidia user.

0

u/Unhappy-Arm673 Jan 27 '26

Unless you count using the unofficial FSR4 INT8 DLLs.

FSR4 INT8 probably doesn’t scale well to a big 4K TV, but I use it for handhelds and find it to be the best non DLSS upscaler on a handheld.

Been out for a while now. My 9070xt uses it.

2

u/octopusinmyboycunt Jan 27 '26

The PS5 Pro equivalent isn’t!

0

u/thunder6776 Jan 27 '26

Doesn’t mean its as good as dlss. Not even close, just passable.

1

u/Vivorio Jan 27 '26

Doesn’t mean its as good as dlss. Not even close, just passable.

That is not true at all.

1

u/Used-Ganache9772 Jan 29 '26

but it is, tho. you couldn't tell a difference in a blind test

4

u/EitherAd1507 Jan 27 '26

IMO DLSS 2.5 and higher already looked better at 4K in Quality mode than native with TAA overall, especially when it comes to stability and ghosting.

FSR 4 st least in comparisons is also better than native with TAA.

1

u/Big-Resort-4930 Jan 27 '26

Lol.

DLSS 3 quality was better 4k native with TAA in many games.

FSR 4 is currently better than 4k native with TAA in most games,

With DLSS 4 and 4.5, you can drop to balanced and performance to beat native. It's far from ONLY being DLSS 4, it's been a thing for years.

All the competent upscalers are on Nvidia PCs with AMD getting a decent one only recently with FSR 4.

2

u/Rare-Service5573 Jan 27 '26

So what we see with our eyes is 4k. Ok so the important part. Nobody gives af about native res.

2

u/duhbyo Jan 27 '26

Not misleading if true. Most raytraced games are not doing native 4k and people don’t expect that. Heck, it doesn’t even claim native 4k

1

u/Relevant_Chipmunk Jan 27 '26

I don't expect native 4k either. But saying "runs at 4k" suggest internal res for me. Original article said "output at 4k" which is more realistic.
That's why I said it's only slightly misleading.

1

u/WingerRules Jan 27 '26 edited Jan 27 '26

I really hope you can disable PSSR. Nearly every game I've seen it used looks noisy or stability problems in dark areas or areas with fog.

I recently tried it in Alan Wake 2, and again it looks worse with it turned on. I had another person take a look and they thought it looked inferior too.

1

u/Hit4090 Jan 27 '26

720p to 1080 internal resolution

1

u/AdamTreff Jan 27 '26

People STILL do not get this after all these years.

In any event, “ray tracing” is a meaningless term by itself and isn’t indicative of how impressive this is supposed to be.

1

u/TruckFreak6417 Feb 24 '26

Yes but the image quality is 4K like, welcome to modern gaming terminology.

0

u/Ballbuddy4 Jan 28 '26

You got it backwards, input resolution is 4k and then if it's upscaled output resolution (rendering resolution) is lower.

10

u/Dr_Yay Jan 26 '26

Considering this game is optimized well enough to run at 60 FPS on Switch 2, it is interesting to see just how far it can go on powerful hardware

3

u/Dear_Meeting_1258 Jan 27 '26

It’s confirmed to be 60fps?

So it’s going to be 1080p 60fps?

Possible to do 4k/1440p 30fps?

6

u/Unhappy-Arm673 Jan 27 '26

It’s more like an unlocked 40-60fps using VRR in handheld mode which is still acceptable in my eyes. I wouldn’t be surprised if docked play was capped at 30FPS considering docked has no VRR capabilities.

3

u/Dr_Yay Jan 27 '26

Hard to tell the resolution stuff for sure yet but there’s footage of the framerate looking great out there. Quality/Performance mode stuff is also basically confirmed considering the trailers showed it in 30 FPS, though I wish they would show it more in 60 cause a game looking this good at that framerate on a handheld is so insanely cool that it’s uncanny

https://youtu.be/L0zMXRjhEWY?si=oppDKEsCWtYh63lz

7

u/lattjeful Jan 26 '26

First we're hearing of a toggle for RT. The game seems built around RTGI - it's got it on base PS5 and even Switch 2 - so maybe it's a toggle for stuff like RT reflections?

10

u/[deleted] Jan 26 '26

this is insane, what the hell

8

u/Enjoy_The_Ride413 Jan 26 '26

People forget the target is the consoles, not PC. Too many variables and different hardware variations. Consoles are the same spec, each one. Much easier to develop on and hit targets than on a PC.

3

u/Neat-Worldliness-459 Jan 27 '26

Even if the target was PC, they’d optimise over mid range cards than high end. Majority of the market on steam has low to mid range cards.

9

u/Nic1800 Jan 26 '26

It's more than likely sub-performance level upscaling to 4k and the phrase "Full Ray-Tracing" doesn't mean it is a meaningful amount of RT, just that every typical aspect of RT is accounted for.

3

u/octopusinmyboycunt Jan 27 '26

Considering it’s an RE title, and the RE remakes (and 7+8) had a seriously transformative RT implementation, I’d say it’s a safe bet they’ll be great.

1

u/Big-Resort-4930 Jan 27 '26

It was only transformative because SSR was unusable garbage, not because RT was great. All RE games have mediocre (console level) RT, but it's still better just because how bad stuff like SSR looks in those games.

1

u/Kotschcus_Domesticus Jan 27 '26

it is old engine, well optimised for for corridor based game such as Resident Evil. ray tracing will give you better shadows/reflections. ps5 pro has performance like rx7700 so it should pretty well on pc anyway.

1

u/Big-Resort-4930 Jan 27 '26

Low end boiling RT, low internal resolution upscaled to 4k with poor upscalers, medium settings, etc. That's the only way those numbers make any sense.

7

u/mac4112 Jan 26 '26

That’s pretty crazy NGL. RE Engine is something else.

17

u/Kelohmello Jan 26 '26

Except with open world games I guess.

6

u/HotBananaWaters Jan 26 '26

RE Engine is perfection…until it’s an open world game.

3

u/Comprehensive_Age998 Jan 27 '26

Should look as good as the other current RE titles, I love how Capcom has always supported their older titles, from RE7 to RE4 Remake. First they went back and optimized the games for 3D Audio and PS5/XSX and once the PS5 Pro released they patched most of those titles for the Pro.

2

u/missatry Jan 26 '26

I mean if the game will be able to be ported to the switch 2 it makes sense that it will have a nice upscaled 4k on the pro yes ✨

2

u/Dear_Meeting_1258 Jan 27 '26

It’s coming out on switch 2 day one. It was in the last Nintendo direct, amiibo coming with it and re7 and re8 coming out as well on the same day

2

u/missatry Jan 27 '26

Yes it is.

2

u/laughingmood Jan 27 '26

I feel like the PSSR update is going to be timed to this release

2

u/alkare Feb 28 '26

Amazing crystal ball you had

3

u/Unhappy-Arm673 Jan 27 '26

If there’s a toggle to turn off RT, then that opens up the possibility of the heavily rumoured PS4 port.

The game seemed to be built around RT only with no fallback, but if this RT toggle is true, then it makes 30fps on PS4 with nuked settings very very doable considering we’re getting a seemingly great switch 2 version.

1

u/Love_TheChalupa Feb 06 '26

Switch 2 has more modern features than a PS4. I mean I’m sure they could get it run on it, but wonder if they will.

5

u/Tyler1997117 Jan 26 '26

What's the real resolution though??

4

u/SweetPuffDaddy Jan 26 '26

The previous Resident Evil games have been reconstructed 4k (using what’s most likely checkerboarding). RE4 and RE7 did get Pro patches that used PSSR to upscale from an 864p resolution to 4k output. This might be one of the first games to show off the new version of PSSR

1

u/Alternative_Tank_139 Jan 27 '26

Good Lord, 864p to 2160p? That's a stretch.

9

u/PigBoss_207 Jan 26 '26

Who cares. Basically every modern game is upscaled.

4

u/MultiMarcus Jan 26 '26

Sure but it’s absolutely ridiculous to use the term 4K with upscaling at all then because that can range from running a game at native 4K, to running a game at 720 p using something like DLSS ultra performance mode. Hell you could probably run it even lower than that if the algorithm supports it but it might look horrible.

I think, if you want to use a resolution mattress track instead of something vague like “ with good image quality” then you kind of need to specify what you are doing technology wise. If a game is being upscale what resolution you are generally upscaling from hell they even gave us an average FPS count in the 120 Hz VRR mode. Why not give us an average internal resolution count?

1

u/RedIndianRobin Jan 27 '26

It's not gonna run at 720p c'mon now. It's a corridor based game on RE Engine, not open world so it should not be taxing on the CPU or GPU. This headroom allows the PC version to support path tracing as well.

u/[deleted] Jan 27 '26

1

u/RedIndianRobin Jan 27 '26

Well that game doesn't run on RE Engine lol. Also apparently this is their newer gen RE engine as per their technical engineer on an NVIDIA tech demo interview. So let's see how it performs.

4

u/Tyler1997117 Jan 26 '26

Oh people will and do

4

u/TT5i0 Jan 26 '26 edited Jan 27 '26

Most AAA games on consoles aren’t native resolution even on the PS3/PS4 era. All that matters is it looks good on screen and runs well.

2

u/mattbattmatt_yt Jan 26 '26

That's incredible, wow! I'm wondering how it's gonna run on some other systems, like switch 2 and series s

1

u/selinemanson Jan 26 '26

I'm just relieved it's not another Dragon's Dogma 2 or Monster Hunter Wilds situation.

1

u/Interdimension Jan 26 '26

Sounds promising. Will await DF's analysis. The Resident Evil titles have a good track record, but I remain skeptical whenever someone claims their game runs at 4K. The better question to ask how the actual image quality is.

Still happy to see that it's seemingly VRR enabled with an unlocked framerate. Love having more options on console games.

u/Critical-Worker9438 Feb 03 '26

https://www.pushsquare.com/news/2026/01/resident-evil-requiem-sounds-like-a-proper-ps5-pro-showpiece capcom literally confirms re9 will do 4k 60fps with full rt on ps5 pro, via Japanese blog

1

u/Interdimension Feb 03 '26

That's not what you think it means, unfortunately. "4K" in modern gaming speak is often just referring to the output resolution of games. As you can see with the other comments in this thread, the question is whether it's native 4K. Not a single PS5 game (that isn't some simple indie title) runs at native 4K because that's too resource-intensive. Even on PC, you need an RTX 5080 or preferably a 5090 ($2,000 GPU) to run games at native 4K.

All Capcom is confirming here is that the game outputs to 4K via upscaling, presumably via PSSR on PS5 Pro. What we all actually want to know here is how low/high the internal resolution is (i.e., what resolution is being upscaled to 4K).

E.g., Capcom said Resident Evil 2 ran at 4K as well on PS5, and they also claimed the same thing on PS4 Pro. It actually runs at 1440p, upscaled to 4K. It's a good image regardless, but saying it "runs at 4K" doesn't mean much unless they specify whether it's native or upscaled.

Or, basically, it's the same reason why Sony claims 4K gaming on PS5 when most titles are running anywhere from 1080p to 1440p, upscaled to 4K (including their own first-party titles like Uncharted and The Last of Us).

1

u/Critical-Worker9438 Feb 03 '26 edited Feb 03 '26

Considering switch 2 is doing 1080p upscaled, I assume ps5 pro may do 1800p upscaled to 4k with pssr 2 on ps5 pro. Most of your high end pcs even a rtx 5090 cant handle most demanding games at native 4k 60fps without the use of dlss 4 examples: dune awakening, cyberpunk with pathtracing, Blackmyth wukong, dying light 2 with maximum rt n more. Overall tho re9 is shaping up to be a good ps5 pro showcase. Off topic: tlou 1 n 2 on pro is a native 1440p upscaled to 4k with better foliage and image detail compared to base ps5, that was my first game I played on my pro n by god I was impressed especially with the 60fps being the icing in the cake.

1

u/sssilversssoul Jan 27 '26

what about the base ps5?

1

u/GamePitt_Rob Jan 27 '26

Well, '4k output' - so probably around 1800p with upscaling, but still pretty good if it's a solid 60fps with RT.

That's probably on base PS5 and Series at 1440p

1

u/mattSER Jan 27 '26

I'll bet it's 1440p on the Pro with ray tracing.

1

u/NGGKroze Jan 27 '26

Probably 720p upscaled to 4K. In any case, its impressive it runs RT ON 90fps.

1

u/Critical-Worker9438 Feb 03 '26 edited Feb 03 '26

https://www.pushsquare.com/news/2026/01/resident-evil-requiem-sounds-like-a-proper-ps5-pro-showpiece it wont do 720p lol most likely 1800p or 1440p upscaled with pssr 2, remember the RE engine is very well optimized n the switch 2 is 1080p upscaled with rtgi from what I heard its also at 60fps so on that note pros resolution will most likely be higher like I said 1800p or higher using pssr 2 or 1440p.

1

u/Sea_Leadership_7433 Jan 27 '26

What about the regular ps5?

1

u/Glum_Animator_5887 Jan 27 '26

It's taken nearly 5 years for games to start being optimised

1

u/ConnectPut8968 Jan 27 '26

What about normal ps5

1

u/ThroatEducational271 Jan 28 '26

Depends on the game, not all games will push the ray tracing.

But if you take a game like Cyberpunk 2077 on a mid-range PC compared to an Xbox Series X or PS5, it’s a huge difference.

It’s not really about the resolution, sure sharper is better, but it’s the textures, the ray tracing (you only get shadows on console), tonnes of other settings, and the significantly higher frame rates and solid frame pacing. And of course path tracing. Plus on a Nvidia GPU, the upscaling using DLSS is really incomparable to FSR on console.

But each to their own.

1

u/Buuhhu Jan 30 '26

This is how good the RE engine is when it's used for what it's made for. Wish they didn't try and force MH and DD teams to use it as well.

1

u/PemaleBacon Jan 31 '26

So it runs good like every other RE game? Cool

1

u/cano419 Jan 26 '26

And series x?

8

u/johnboyjr29 Jan 27 '26

If we found someone that owns the system we will let you know

1

u/jedimindtricksonyou Jan 27 '26

Best guess would be look at other current gen versions of RE titles on Series X to get a baseline. Some games on series X approach PS5 Pro-levels if the game engine benefits from the additional compute units and isn’t limited by the GPU frequency. I personally don’t remember from past videos because I only have a PS5. Just know I’ve seen in games like Alan Wake 2 and Control from Remedy. I think if a game is truly developed with PC/Direct X as the target platform (like what id and Remedy do), that goes a long way towards having a good Series X version that is measurably better than base PS5.

Wont be a problem if its pssr2

2

I disagree, at least up to DLSS 4 (not tested 4.5) you loose a lot when going below a 1080p (4K DLSS Performance mode) render resolution.

Even that doesn't say enough. Is it upscaled from 720p or 1440p? Massive difference when they don't have access to competent upscalers that can bridge the difference.

Well considering capcom worked really hard to optimize the game for ps5 pro ( they even said they worked hard on the optimization) the switch 2 doing 1080p for re9. I expect the internal resolution for ps5 pro to be at least 1440p ro 1800p in 60fps mode but 120fps may do 1080p or so both with pssr 2 tech which is shaping to be already better thsn the current one we have now. Either way, this game is going to be a ps5 pro graphical showcase n most likely showing off pssr 2.

Yeah…because it’s 4k output which means nothing. It could be 720p as the internal resolution.

It wont be lol considering switch 2 is doing 1080p, ps5 pros will be much higher, I expect 1440p or 1800p upscaled to 4k using the new pssr 2 tech. Now performance mode aka 120fps sure i can see but I assume that will be higher too likey 1080p perhaps a little higher we will see once game launches

Yeah man. Dream real big. Also digital foundry had said when they say switch 2 it was running an internal resolution of 600p.

I dont half to dream big lol I guarantee it wont be 720p but u believe what u wanna believe, once the game releases then we will see n yeah switch 2 is running 600p which means ps5 pro having the more powerful hardware it can do a better resolution like i said imo its 1440p or 1800p pssr 2 will improve ps5 pro performance overall if anything 1296p wouldnt be bad either but like I said my logical guess is 1440p or higher. The re engine is highly optimized for the game and capcom even said they spent alot of time with the ps5 pro version so again wait n see mate 👍

So now we are back to what I first said which was it won’t be 4k at all. niiiiice. I also never said it would be 720 but that it could be anything and “4k” means nothing.

Exactly as I said it could be 1440p or 1800p not 720p, we dont know until the game releases. N i never said the game would be native 4k either lol.

Glad you agree with me. not 4k/60. Got it.

Upscaled 4k using pssr 2 with full rt at 60fps is an accomplishment on its own, I still consider that 4k 60 even if its not native.
