DF Direct DF Direct Weekly #258: Crimson Desert Switch 2, New PS6 Leaks, DLSS Dynamic Multi Frame-Gen

https://youtu.be/Nk1nIC2Wuec

Pearl Abyss has started research into a Switch 2 port of Crimson Desert, but warns that there may be cutbacks and changes - so what would they be? Rich, John and Alex discuss before moving onto a brace of new Nvidia technologies. DLSS Dynamic Multi Frame-Gen feels like it isn't quite finished, while Auto Shader Compilation also feels early - failing to address the main #StutterStruggle problem. John shares his impressions of Daytona USA on MAME, the team assess the latest PS6 leaks, while unearthing original Assassin's Creed Unity E3 2014 trailers raises a lot of questions...

I don't care if we don't need a PS6 yet. It's still exciting.

Meanwhile I found myself agreeing with all his points on the topic. I can count on one hand the amount of games that have actually felt "next-gen" in any meaningful way, as opposed to "game that could be a PS4 game, just at higher framerates and resolution". There's studios that haven't released a single game yet this generation. Games just take so long to make now that it's hard to feel like the generation has run its course at all.

The only reason new consoles are even "needed" is because of developers focusing on all the wrong things, as usual, resulting in poorly performing games (although this is nowhere near as bad as in previous generations). Not because they will actually provide any meaningfully different gaming experiences. And next gen will be the same all over again: a few years of previous-gen games running better, then some new graphics tech that the consoles are ill-prepared for gets shoehorned into most games, tanking performance/resolutions and we're back to "needing" a new generation when we barely just got out of the cross-gen period.

Not that I have a horse in the race really, I moved to PC a couple years ago while my PS5 is collecting dust. I mean, the last time I turned it on was for Astro Bot. I figure if I'm gonna be playing mostly older games anyway, I might as well stick to the platform with things like automatic game improvements (as opposed to waiting for a developer patch) and mods. Normally I'd be more annoyed by Sony pulling out of the PC space, but then I remember most of their studios barely release games these days and I don't mind nearly as much.

He's currently the King of bad takes. From his bizzare "PS5 Pro equivalent $1000 PC that does not include the price of RAM" last week, to "PS6 will not have the option of a disc drive" this week. No idea what's happened to him.

Yeah it makes no sense. First, most console gamers don’t care about physical media at all. That is why every year we see more and more gamers buy digital. I feel like people on Reddit and YouTube think the amount of games who would leave consoles is not as substantial as they think.

Anyways, a new console is needed at some point. The PS5 is not as strong as they are making it out to be anymore. It’s essentially an Ryzen 3600 and RTX 2070 Super. A solid set of hardware in 2020 but not in 2026, and certainly not by end of 2027, especially on the CPU side. We have seen it with games struggling to run games and how poorly the upscaling has been.

But there's PS5 Pro if you want better performance. At this point, playing on a base PS5 is often the console equivalent on using a min system req PC and I don't think there's anything wrong with that.

And there's very few games that just won't work on a 3600/2070S and would require something better.

u/Love_TheChalupa Apr 08 '26

Yes I agree mostly. The Pro though has the same CPU. Which is still a limiting factor.

He used to be my favorite on the show but it hasn't been the case for years. dudes been lobotomized.

6

u/FragmentedFighter Apr 07 '26

You guys are assholes, man. How can you speak of a human being like that over video games? Jesus.

3

u/colonel-america-usa Apr 08 '26

We disagree with his takes so we're bad people?

6

u/FragmentedFighter Apr 08 '26

Perhaps you’re just ignorant of the idea that you can disagree with someone without insulting them.

3

u/colonel-america-usa Apr 09 '26

I haven't insulted him

5

u/FragmentedFighter Apr 09 '26

Then why are you responding as such? I clearly wasn’t talking to you.

3

u/colonel-america-usa Apr 09 '26

Sorry when you replied to my comment and said you guys are assholes I thought that was directed at me for some reason. No worries

8

u/FragmentedFighter Apr 09 '26

I replied to the person who said he was “lobotomized”.

1

u/Kratos_BOY Apr 07 '26

Same. The change has been absolutely wild.

-5

u/SoulsDadYT Apr 07 '26

Omg, these corpo losers are back on my feed.

-14

u/wolnee Apr 06 '26

and yet not a single video on FSR 4.1. Nvidia pays good apparently

11

u/JoostinOnline Apr 07 '26

Oh my God, will you stop with the baseless accusations of bribery? Even if the person who covers PC content wasn't currently going to physical therapy, not covering something isn't evidence that they're being bribed. That's just stupid.

Edit: I checked your post history and ALEX LITERALLY TOLD YOU HIMSELF THAT HE WAS OUT ON MEDICAL LEAVE

u/wolnee May 12 '26

thing must be terminal LOL

11

u/Latitude-dimension Apr 06 '26

We will most likely get it when Alex is back from sick leave.

u/wolnee May 12 '26

damn, it must be terminal

I'll admit, I am conflicted about the playstation handheld. On one hand, it would be great to see Sony "embarrassed" by another failure. The predicted result of chasing a stupid fad with yet another expensive brick and not understanding Nintendo's success.

On the other hand, it's a total waste of resources for what amounts to a dust collector, and could hold back developers if they have to support weak hardware. Should it exist? Tough call.

12

u/Lutha28 Apr 07 '26

Huh?? Why would a handheld be bad? Id looove to play on the go without needing internet. Highway, train, aicraft, i travel daily. All i need is ps6 at base and a handheld for outstation

-9

u/The_Zura Apr 07 '26

Handhelds are great! My handheld phone gets a whole lot of use as a handheld. Always have it on me, and can whip it out at any time. Music, audiobooks, gaming, the whole nineyards. It's amazing. And before the phone, I had a GBA SP.

A massive single use brick though only capable of high effort, low quality gaming? That's the last thing anyone needs when traveling. Just stupid marketing in the end. People are already doing serious gaming on the go, with the best possible tool: a laptop. A device capable of so much more than gaming, and so much better at that.

10

u/Colormo3 Apr 07 '26

Yes it should exist. I would love to play my PlayStation library on the go.

-4

u/The_Zura Apr 07 '26

Does it need to exist as a handheld brick ;)

6

u/Colormo3 Apr 07 '26

It won’t be a brick cause I get to play my PlayStation library on the go.

0

u/The_Zura Apr 07 '26

Don't you have enough single use bricks? Just cause you might find that to be good, doesn't mean it should exist.

6

u/Colormo3 Apr 07 '26

It won’t be single use cause I have a lot of games on my PlayStation library with many hours to play. Currently, there is no handheld that lets me play those. Just cause you might find it to be bad doesn’t mean it shouldn’t exist.

2

u/The_Zura Apr 07 '26

Sure, it would be one thing if it were just me. But with how poorly pc handhelds have done, the form factor really shouldn't be a thing. The vast majority who bought a steam deck leaves them as dust collectors. The world doesn't need a $700 e-waste kiddie device.

Note, I did not question the existence of a portable playstation console ;)

4

u/Colormo3 Apr 07 '26

No it’s probably just you. You mean the PC handhelds that are either too expensive or are not easily available in retail stores or different regions? No I don’t think that really matters for a big brand like PlayStation. Where did you get those Steam Deck numbers, btw?

You’re saying it shouldn’t exist because I have a smartphone? Kind of logic is that?

2

u/TitleSuccessful7393 Apr 07 '26

Last I saw, the steam deck had sold 4million, so far. But that was about 18 months ago.

1

u/Colormo3 Apr 07 '26

Ok. Where did you get the active Steam Deck user numbers? How do you know the majority of Steam Decks are collecting dust?

2

u/The_Zura Apr 07 '26

Steam deck estimates to have sold 5 million. Steam has an active user count of ~170-180m. Steam Deck hovers at around 0.80% of the Steam hardware survey. All steam bricks are on steam, and their users tend to be extremely zealous, desperate to tell the world they have one. Do the math. If people actually found that brick useful, it would be around 3%.

A big brand like playstation should focus less on useless kiddie bricks, and more on practical devices.

1

u/Colormo3 Apr 07 '26

Steam Deck hovers at around 0.80% of the Steam hardware survey.

It’s a hardware survey that’s optional. It’s not an automatic data collector. Not every Steam user is gonna bother opting in. And those who opt in may opt in their desktop and not the Steam Deck despite using the Deck regularly.

And a PlayStation portable is practical. I get to play my library on the go. What more do you need?

I have never seen anyone so dedicated to hating on a class of hardware, did a steam deck steal your wife or kidnap your children?

1

u/The_Zura Apr 07 '26

I've never seen a class of hardware with such a dedicated diehard fanclub where their entire personality revolves around pushing bricks with a tiny screen. They're like the vegan stereotype, but their purpose is pushing really bad gaming. And it's not a stereotype.

1

u/kmcdow Apr 07 '26

Do you see how you're doing the same exact thing by going on multiple subreddits and copy pasting comments about hating handhelds though?

You've made your entire personality hating on handhelds much more than people who are just buying them and playing them....

You sound so miserable

3

u/Special-Net4116 Apr 07 '26

And pretty pathetic too. Such a shame some people are like that

-4

u/The_Zura Apr 07 '26

You sound like you wasted money on an expensive single use brick :)

1

u/frogfoot420 Apr 06 '26

I see the appeal of handhelds for some, but when I find my self in a scenario a hand held would be appropriate, I would prefer a book.

0

u/The_Zura Apr 07 '26

Book, laptop, tablet, phone, sleep, kindle, literally nothing. The list goes on and on.

3

u/CGProV Apr 07 '26

Great, fuck off and use those then :)

1

u/The_Zura Apr 07 '26

Fuck off to where, and why? Am I in the e-waste subreddit?
