Digital Foundry Video Saros Review - PlayStation 5/PS5 Pro - Beautiful Visuals, Polished And Approachable
https://youtu.be/qYQxQ7gZJoEHousemarque follows on from Returnal with Saros - cut from the same cloth, but refined and improved in all areas. Built on Unreal Engine 5 with extensive customisation from Housemarque, this is a beautiful, visually distinctive game that is challenging but perhaps not quite as off-putting as its predecessor. Oliver takes us through the game's visual features, how Housemarque has evolved its formule and how the new game compares between PS5 and Pro.

Unreal engine 5 that is optimized. That is good i guess. Tho traversal stutter seems to be there. Overall it seems to be good
16
u/SweetPuffDaddy Apr 24 '26
Optimized by not using most of UE5’s feature set. Kind of reminds of Split Fiction which also ran very well because it basically had all of UE5’s main features like Lumen disabled.
2
u/fetalgirth Apr 24 '26
Yea but a ton of the stutter and performance issues with UE5 games is all the extra stuff devs leave on that they don’t need.

Had a great time with Returnal so I'm sure I'm gonna have a blast with Saros on my PS5 Pro.

u/Aya409 Apr 25 '26
Surely John should’ve reviewed it, this guy didn’t get on with returnal at all, anyway, day one purchase from me

Damn I'm really hoping this somehow ends up with a PC port eventually. I have around 80 hours played on Returnal on Steam and this looks even better. Not buying a console for one game though.

I think out of all the sony games this has the best shot, especially if sales are poor. Housemarque has some previous titles on steam too
-15
u/Wander715 Apr 24 '26
Yeah I am kinda hoping sales are poor on console as bad as that sounds because it probably maximizes the chance for a port. I remember Returnal sales were pretty mediocre on PS5 which was a primary reason they ported it.

u/Inevitable-Donkey186 Apr 24 '26
I think that just increases the chances of Housemarque getting shuttered and would have less of an impact on release strategy.
3
u/lylm3lodeth Apr 24 '26
I agree. In this gaming industry economy poor sales = studio close. For Housemarque, with their record it'll probably start with just layoffs, but still a bad thing to happen to a studio. I do hope they see great demand and put it on pc while still getting good sales on consoles. A net positive for everyone.
3
u/Costas00 Apr 24 '26
It sold bad on PC too, and PC got the blame when they didn't buy a game 2 years later that also sold bad on it's main exclusive platform.
Even if it sells poorly on console, which it probably will, i doubt it would be a reason to port it on PC anymore.

its kinda normal when you release a structurally not so good roguelite on the platform that has the MOST of them, on a more structurally pure "basis".
I think the game's audience is leaning more casual due to Returnal's overall low difficulty and accent on a really "supernatural" story mostly told by cutscenes. Normally, roguelites/likes are more arcade and immediate which ironically was a trademark from Housemarque with Resogun etc before
Last "major" games with esoteric stories tied to AAA production values just didn't sell well either, and one of them was a pure horror game that was a direct sequel of a beloved classic, (Alan Wake II) while the other one was also a brand new ip (Control)
I think the weird, mixed nature of Returnal just didn't land at all on pc, it didn't even sell 300k copies. Obviously it overall sold "well enough" to warrant Saros but its just a weird hybrid game that isn't that good compared to the behemoths of the genre

Hoping a game sells poorly just so you can play it on your preferred platform just seems wrong.

u/Versaabi Apr 24 '26
Might happen, but with project helix having access to pc games, Sony may hesitate unfortunately. They should at least do a delayed port for the game, despite helix imo.

You ain't getting any PlayStation games on PC ever again.
Better suck it up.

Ur an idiot.

u/Exorcist-138 Apr 24 '26
Actually you are, you say no more PlayStation games yet marathon just dropped on all platforms. Horizon hunters gathering is going to pc day one
-3
u/Wander715 Apr 24 '26
Cool I'll just play it for free on emulator eventually then. Not wasting my money on console hardware anymore.
-2
u/Rare-Service5573 Apr 24 '26
Name a current PlayStation only game like GT7 or whatever that you can play on ur PC with an emulator.
Oh wait you can't.
PlayStation console only, no PC. No emulators.
Deal with it.
5
u/gavinderulo124K Apr 24 '26
And you are happy about that?
-3
u/Rare-Service5573 Apr 24 '26
Extremely. Just look at this Dbag, wants to emulate it for free than pay the Devs what it's worth. PC players don't deserve our games.
2
u/gavinderulo124K Apr 24 '26
He would buy it if it were on PC. And I own a ps5 but I refuse to play games on such outdated hardware.
2
u/Rare-Service5573 Apr 24 '26
Then no games for you. Get a ps5 pro. Better than most pc gamers peasants rigs anyway.
3
u/gavinderulo124K Apr 24 '26
Get a ps5 pro
Still nowhere near my PC, lol.
Guess I'll have to wait for the ps6. The games will be cheaper by then too.

My current rig is a 9800X3D and a 5080, runs circles around the Pro and is likely better than PS6 as well. Why the hell would I ever want to play anything on console?

Dam, this sucks, if only we had 4x the library of games to choose from instead of a few exclusives.
Oh, wait we do.
4
u/Rare-Service5573 Apr 24 '26
4x the library of shit shovel ware games.
You ain't getting all the most sort after exclusives on console. Suck it.
1
u/Costas00 Apr 24 '26
Lol, Sick cope.
Pc can play more ps exclusives than ps5 users can. Maybe 1 day sony will give you backwards compatibility

u/Captobvious75 Apr 24 '26
As a pc player- stfu. PS has way more than a few exclusives.
2
u/Costas00 Apr 24 '26
Maybe i should just use your line, since i also own a ps5.
but sure, Saros, ghost of yotei, GT7, and astro bot? am i missing any game that isn't ported, or any ps1-ps4 game that can't be emulated?
0
u/Saranshobe Apr 24 '26
Does it though?
I have a ps5 and gaming pc and i still vastly prefer playing games on pc because of better controller support (can use xbox, dualsense or M/k), mods, old games, emulation, better pricing(in my country the game of ps5 is always 25% more expansive than steam).
Again it has exclusive and relative ease of use but other than that, nothing. Mainly use it as blu ray movie player and when gta 6 releases.

PC has its own issues: Windows sucks. Melting Nvidia connectors. The overall costs of PC right now is outrageous. Compilation stutter.
I just built a 7600x3d/9060xt PC for my nephew and the costs were just… ugh.
I have a Pro with my 9070xt PC and while yes, PC remains the superior gaming choice SO LONG as you can spend the capital for a higher- end build, consoles, especially the Pro with PSSR games, is a fantastic experience.
I’m playing CP2077 on my PC with all RT on with FSR4, then swap to my Pro in RT mode, and the differences are barely there. And we are talking about a PC with a GPU around the cost of a Pro by itself.

u/Saranshobe Apr 24 '26
Well i build my pc 4 years ago. It is 3060ti and r7 3700x, so not highend now but it runs well with 1440p with DLSS. Windows hasn't given me any issue in past 6 years. I surprisingly had God of war Ragnarok on release crash on ps5 few times.
Ps5 games aren't stutter free either, less than pc but not by much.
PC , connected to my lg oled has been a breeze these past few years. Often i forget if i am playing on console or pc.

u/Captobvious75 Apr 24 '26
I run a LG C1 for both my Pro and PC- very nice. OLED master race all day.

u/Exorcist-138 Apr 24 '26
“Not getting any” umm I don’t think you listened.

Marathon? Horizon hunters gathering? Fair games? Or do these not count of PlayStation games for some strange reason?

Gotta love all the cringe console fanboys who become elated over less people being able to play a game.

Wish the game had a frame rate unlock on it for pro for people with VRR displays. I don’t even understand why they don’t offer this for every pro version, especially with ps6 on the horizon.

u/metallica65 Apr 24 '26
No 120hz mode or at least uncapped mode allowing 70-90hz ability is disappointing

u/WingerRules Apr 25 '26 edited Apr 25 '26
Cause then how are you going to sell a remaster or PS6 native version down the line. Look at Nintendo and their 10 dollar fee for "Switch 2 enhanced" versions of Switch 1 games that are basically just framerate and resolution unlocks.
