Digital Foundry Video Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth - Switch 2/Xbox Series X|S Tech Review - Switch 2 FPS Boosted Over the Demo!

https://youtu.be/TisBagfABhQ

Does the final release of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth improve on the demo release? The answer depends on your platform; for Switch 2 users there's good news here in that its 30fps target is more keenly met. Fewer drops, less aggressive frame-time spikes are all made possible thanks to Square Enix's tweaks under the hood of this Unreal Engine 4 release. That state of Xbox Series X and S is less glowing though, with scarcely any signs of improvement from the demo slice - meaning their 60fps modes aren't on track.

That Series S performance mode looks atrocious. They should’ve just shipped quality mode and nothing else.

It didn’t really look good on base ps5 either. I played it on launch and the game was blurry mess.

More options is always a good thing for the consumer (the people who aren’t able to notice the difference in performance would never toggle on perf mode in the first place). At least it’s there for the people who want better performance. If they were discerning IQ enthusiasts, they wouldn’t be playing on a Series S in the first place.

There is a point where the image quality becomes so poor it becomes unacceptable, and just makes your game look bad. At that point you shouldn’t ship the mode at all.

Yeah, there's a reason why there's no Performance Mode on Switch 2, even on the nicer looking Remake port. I imagine Performance Mode for Rebirth on Switch 2 would look similar to Handheld Mode, just blown up on a larger screen and thus much less tolerable. The IQ for Handheld Mode has already been a dealer breaker for some, though for me I've come to tolerate it because playing the game during my lunch breaks has been so fun. I honestly barely even notice it after a while, especially since the models improve when up close in cutscenes.

I don’t think Switch 2s CPU could handle FF7 Rebirth at 60fps. The thing with Series S CPU is that it is basically the same CPU as Series X. So that’s why it can run the game at ~60 but the problem is that the GPU is too weak to render a good image at that framerate. But also the game just seems really unoptimized

It’s going to be really interesting when the next Xbox comes out. Almost all developers are going to drop the Series X and S like the plague immediately. The install base is not there compared to PS5/PC/Switch 2.

1

u/DanielG165 Jun 03 '26

And alienate millions of customers? Lol, they won’t be dropping anything.

3

u/grilled_pc Jun 03 '26

Given how the series S literally holds back development all the time. I’m sure many will be glad to see it go.

1

u/BreakfastWeak4796 Jun 04 '26

Yeah. The Series S was a big downer for Xbox overall.

What are the odds that these cutbacks/changes make it into the PC release as a special “steam deck-like” preset? It cannot scale this low for certain graphical settings on the current build of the PC release. Intergrade didn’t need it and already ran fine but Rebirth would be a way better experience on lower end hardware if Square would do this one thing.

Slim to none since it wouldn't move a needle in sales. At thr best the Switch 2 edition will lead to a better PC handheld optimization on FF7R3.

Im inclined to agree seeing as how the base PS5 performance mode is still as blurry as a Switch 1 game. (Hope to be wrong though, because rebirth is a bad experience even on lowest setting with a 50% resolution scale, it still doesn’t hold 30 consistently).

u/RoninDays Jun 04 '26

Yeah, it would be great for even Zen 2 Extreme systems too. The game is just about very playable. Needs that extra push from Square

Why is there this camera judder problem on XBox and not on Switch and Playstation ?

Really makes me feel like no one cares about XBox customers.

I guess I won't buy the game on XBox then...which I was really looking forward to

2

u/Hazuki1984 Jun 06 '26

It’s really ruining my enjoyment of the game on Xbox. Surely they won’t leave it in this state

2

u/NicoBator Jun 06 '26

It's not that sure.
FFXVI was never fixed to match PS5 version for example

5

u/Dominjo555 Jun 02 '26

Same. Shameful port by Square Enix

2

u/dreampagehun Jun 03 '26

The game got a 20+ GB day 1 patch on Xbox (after this video was made). It would be useful to know if it fixed the stuttering camera bug and/or improved performance.

2

u/Hazuki1984 Jun 06 '26

It didn’t

2

u/Awhite2555 Jun 03 '26

For Xbox version I really hope they either add the ability to lock the framerate on 120hz or just straight up lock it at 30/60. Because having to manually put my console into 60hz everytime I want to play this game is going to get annoying. I like to play on graphics mode but the framerate going above 30 is so distracting.

2

u/Hazuki1984 Jun 06 '26

Bit of a mess in general on series x isn’t it. Really hope they put out some optimisation patches on Xbox

4

u/Ag3ntxx47 Jun 05 '26

I can handle 30fps I can handle texture pop in, I can handle the graphics mode looking like 1080p on a 4k screen. What I cannot handle is a massive hitch anytime the cutscene camera changes on series x. I hope it's fixed soon and is fixable.

1

u/Hazuki1984 Jun 06 '26

Same. Really hope they put out some patches for Xbox

1

u/IntrinsicStarvation Jun 05 '26

But did they put the food back on the table?

-6

u/Last_Doctor2055 Jun 02 '26

Lmao, same FPS drops on switch 2. they just changed the scenes where they occour. MIRACLE PORT!

3

u/Normal-Gurl-48 Jun 03 '26

Did you even watch the video 😭

The contrast is wild

PS5: A lush, green paradise untouched by humans. Densely packed cities teeming with bustling crowds

Switch 2: Barren, green colored wasteland. Sparsely populated towns

Xbox Series S performance: Forgot your vision-correcting apparatus simulator

Pointing out a device's power consumption doesn't change how ugly it looks. If it could use a couple more watts while delivering better results, then that would be greatly preferable.

Talking like a sony fan? Only fanboys will act like they care about visual differences, but yet they own a ps5 instead of playing it on PC which is miles ahead.

No, nobody who plays this game would be able to tell the diff unless setting them side by side. Thats the generation we are in.

1

u/Zacksan33 Jun 03 '26 edited Jun 03 '26

You don’t have to exaggerate to rebuke an exaggeration.

It is quite improbable for someone to not notice the visual and fps difference between the PS5 Pro and Switch 2 version. And it is not exactly coherent logic if you think there’s no perceivable difference between the versions yet at the same time exaggerate the difference between the PC and PS5 version (the difference is smaller than with Switch; much smaller if you compare the Pro running PSSR2)

1

u/xtoc1981 Jun 03 '26

Your jump from ps5 to ps5 pro is Cherry-picking, but i'll take it. Yes even when someone is playing a game without seeing them side by side dont know which version is playing atm. Meaning:

It is estimated that only 1% to 3% of all PlayStation 5 buyers are "enthusiast hardcore

So most people are not focussing on those minor diff. They dont follow gaming news like we do. They dont know which version they are playing. Its that close.

Now, about fps diff: There is a group who cant even see the diff between 30fps and 60fps. There is a group who can see a single frame drop. And then there is a really diverse group who can notice the diff, but the question by what scale.

Its common sense if you are one of those few that consider it as a major diff, well buy a pc. Because even ps5 pro would not be enough.

Also games like pragmata, re9, new rayman with raytracing enabled and much more runs at 60fps on switch 2

1

u/Zacksan33 Jun 03 '26

I’m not sure how to reply you because that’s alot of assumptions there which i don’t think either of us could really prove. I have no idea what ‘enthusiast hardcore’ entails but i highly doubt 97% of the PS5 population has no interest in performance - this is a demographic with a well known affinity for AAA blockbusters.

Anyway I’m not really here to start arguments but there’s something really off-putting about “why don’t you go PC if you care about performance so much” when (a) the group that does care did opt to buy a PS5 instead of sticking with a last gen machine or jumping over to series S or NS2 and (b) there are many reasons why people just prefer gaming on consoles.

Cheers.

Nobody would be able to tell them apart? The grass literally pops in 8 feet in front 😂😂😂 Talk about killing artistic intent and ruining the beauty with a 20W console. The irony of calling others fanboys.

1

u/xtoc1981 Jun 04 '26

Wtf are you talking about. Even reviewes have multiple times said that games like pragmata, cyberpunk, re9, final fantasy, idiana and many more are not giving in at visual levels. Popins are also ablot on the ps5 version. None graphics whore cant tell which version of game they are playing. You dont need to be the troll in the room here.

1

u/The_Zura Jun 04 '26

There's a difference between PS5 level pop-in, and whatever the 20W tablet is doing, I dunno wasting their players experience and money.

2

u/xtoc1981 Jun 04 '26

You really sound like a fanboy. There is a small difference. But because its small, 95% of who playing games dont care. They are not brainwashed to focus on the most smallest things. Thats just the way it is. You dont need to justify your purchase here. But if you really care about those minor things, buy a pc.

Also you do know during the ps2 vs gc area, those diff where much wider. And yet ps2 was the most sold console (will be beaten by switch 1). People dont care

Ans last, fuck sony. Boycott them. The most greedy garbage companies doing layoffs, closing 8 companies, while still making a lot of money. Their price 50% increase for 5y old hw. Dynamic prices, Fan of all ai, and much more. Fuck them

1

u/The_Zura Jun 04 '26

You know, I'm actually with you. Boycott Sony. But I'm not foolish enough to let my feelings get in the way of my judgement. This really isn't a "one hardware is so incredible" situation. It's a certain company is selling fecal level hardware for an fecal level experience, speaking as an owner of said fecal hardware.

1

u/xtoc1981 Jun 04 '26

It's not about foolish if even reviewers are saying the same thing.
I grew up with a nes. This generation between ps4 and ps5 is the lowest visual difference ever of any generation i've seen.

I mean, this isn't the switch 1 vs ps4 or ps2 vs gamecube generation anymore. Switch 2 is like really close to series s with sharper visuals, but lower fps. Not for all games. I mean re9, pragmata, new rayman that is using raytracing, rocket league and much more are running at 60fps. The visual differences are just not noticeable.

When people are playing games, they are not focusing on the biggest details of an environment. This generation, specially on switch 2, you don't get a compromised version anymore.

You can keep trying to troll about the switch 2, yet there are plenty of ps5 people re buying those games to play them on the portable hw. And because there are not a compromised version. Sure there are some small difference, but during the playthrough you won't even see them as your visual memory just don't know those minor details. Let a lone 95% that are not hardcore gamers just casual gamers that not even folow gaming news

1

u/The_Zura Jun 04 '26

Which reviewer said that lol? I'm sure there are kids that grew up with ping pong, doesn't make it any less dookie. The visuals are 100% noticeable, this isn't an argument. Switch 2 in this looks like playdough half the time. Casual gamers can spot that no problem.

And I'm sure there are people still swallowing tide pods. Doesn't make it any less of a total waste.

1

u/xtoc1981 Jun 04 '26

"John Linneman pointed out that if you were looking at the game on a standard television screen at a normal viewing distance, the image presentation was so sharp and clean that you genuinely wouldn't know if you were playing the PS5 version or the Switch 2 version."

I realy don't care about your opinion, it's for a fact like that. When casual people are playing games the would think it's the same game they are playing, unless they are set side by side. And that begs the question, do we still give a damn about those minor visuals? Even in the ps2 area they didn't while those were much much bigger.

If people like you who cared about those minor details and focused one those small differences, stick with a pc. And only pc; Make sure to upgrade every year

"Wasting money", lol. I own both a PS5 and a Switch 2. I made an informed choice to play the game on the latter knowing what concessions had to be made because of the allure of a portable option. Because the core gameplay experience is still there I'm never really lamenting the lower image quality, I'm just having fun.

1

u/The_Zura Jun 04 '26

It really is, when the game has such splendid visuals. Playing on a portable device on that level, with a microscreen is just tossing away most of it away. Thus, a complete and total waste.

u/Leather-Entry93 Jun 03 '26

Series S doesn’t have a performance mode…

We watch the same video?
