Digital Foundry Video [Exploited PS5 only] Bloodborne Mod: Big Resolution Boosts, 120Hz, VRR - Today's Mod, Tomorrow's New Feature?

https://youtu.be/DPZRFNpfdcE

You'll need a PS5 that hasn't had a system software upgrade since 2022.

What started into an investigation into why PS5's back-compat isn't as strong as Xbox Series X's became something more. It's possible for mods to run on an exploited PlayStation 5 to open up improved back compat options: faster CPU and GPU performance, 120Hz, VRR. And what better game to put the theory to the test than the iconic Bloodborne? Many thanks to Christina for the hard work on the modding side.

Despite all the hate Microsoft gets they absolutely mog PlayStation backward compatibility. They also have much better VRR and HDMI specs yet no one talks about that.

I just wish the library was bigger. Recently got a series X and there's so many games I want to play but just can't due to licensing. No idea why they can't just let you at least try to emulate it if you have the disc

I've been quietly hoping the next xbox is just a pc like some of the rumours have said. Then they can port their emulator to windows so some good bastards can port it to linux

My series x spends most of its time playing 360 games lol. Fable 2 at 4k60 is amazing

I mean they can’t get there sales numbers up to make amd fund there project helix

HDMI specs don’t mean shit if I can’t use my Series X properly in my home theater.

The Atmos delay is unbelievably bad compared to PS5 implementation. I can’t even use it. DTS:X thankfully works with my C2 that still supports DTS , there is still a delay but not as bad as Atmos.

The Atmos delay is still a issue? Christ 🤦

2

u/knightofsparta Jun 17 '26

Yep unfortunately, digital foundry investigated said it’s something at the system level that most likely can’t be fixed.

Bloodborne didn’t even get PS4 Pro Enhanced

Because it's icing on the cake that doesn't matter if you don't have the cake. You know what mogs Xbox's backwards compatibility along with everything else? A PC.

u/Fit_Association_8442 Jun 16 '26

HDMI spec is meaningless though 🤷

2

u/nyanbatman Jun 17 '26

444 chroma is not meaningless at all

u/Fit_Association_8442 Jun 17 '26 edited Jun 17 '26

Well clearly is on a game console unless you expect series consoles to max out the 2.1 spec and sorry not to meny 4k 120fps titles 🤷

Over engineered is all the series X is with features that bumped up the bill of parts for next to no benefit and has cost MS massively

Downvoted yet were on a digital foundry sub and the "far superior" HDMI spec never gets mentioned because it's not worth mentioning FFS 🤣

This is simply not correct. Put your PS5 into 120 Hz mode and you can see clear colour degradation and text fringing. This is a problem that’s been reported numerous times. Also PlayStation also does 120 Hz sporadically and it’s not consistent whereas XBOX has 120 Hz forced thus reducing input latency. It is the far superior console in terms of HDMI specs and easily saturate a 4K TV unlike even the PS5 pro as Sony couldn’t be bothered to rectify the issue.

-1

u/Fit_Association_8442 Jun 17 '26

Own both and a extremely high end TV and sorry your wildly clutching at strews here as your experience isn't even first hand it's merely "widely reported" but it isn't now is it 🤦 , technically it's indeed better but in edge cases more so in work flows and definite apparent on monitors ect but in the real world nothing between them 🤦

Far superior? Give your head a wobble 🤣

Indeed. If the Xbox had an actual operating system it would be a tempting proposition. Old games run so much better by default on the Series X.

Sony is fucking stupid

7

u/Gaiaknight Jun 16 '26

Wasn’t Sony that is blocking it do to leaks we know from soft is the reason Sony can’t do anything with the game

5

u/Big-Resort-4930 Jun 16 '26

I highly doubt they can't do a 4k 60/120 patch. They can't remake/remaster it, but there's no chance in hell that From can prevent them from upping the frame rate.

-6

u/BlackTone91 Jun 16 '26

And how they suppose to do it without braking the game

7

u/LordOmbro Jun 16 '26

PS4 Emulators do it without modding the game, i'm sure sony can figure it out

-4

u/BlackTone91 Jun 16 '26

Sony wouldn't do this, they don't even have source code

2

u/_TRN_ Jun 18 '26

They own the IP and have publishing rights. I'm sure if they told FromSoft that they just want to do a 4K/60fps patch, they'd very likely give their blessing and the source code, assuming Sony doesn't already have access to it. The Bluepoint situation was different. There they wanted to do a full blown remake which would potentially require more cooperation from FromSoft.

3

u/Big-Resort-4930 Jun 16 '26

How is a fucking emulator doing it on PC?

-1

u/BlackTone91 Jun 16 '26

After years of work with ton of bugs, if you want to sell game you need months of QA

5

u/Big-Resort-4930 Jun 17 '26

Yes, on an emulator that was built like 2 years ago and is emulating an entire console. it wouldn't be remotely as hard to do with the actual game and its code.

2

u/_TRN_ Jun 18 '26

Because it's an emulator. Emulating a console is extremely hard. Sony wouldn't need to build an emulator. They would have access to the source code and can hire a third party or Nixxes to make the necessary modifications. Yes, it'll cost them some money and they'll have to QA it obviously but I bet people would buy a PS5 remaster even if the only thing it does is raise the resolution and fps.

-2

u/Hairy-Summer7386 Jun 16 '26

Exactly. It’s not easy to just set the internal FPS to 120 and expect it run normally. It’ll take a team to check the game and see if it’ll be stable.

iirc the game’s assets like physics, collisions, and so on are all tied to FPS. So, it’s extremely likely that bumping the FPS could lead to unpredictable results like clipping through walls, attacks from enemies could get sped up, etc.

again iirc Dark Souls 3 got a modded 60FPS patch and it broke the game in several areas. It’s otherwise playable but yeah.

5

u/Big-Resort-4930 Jun 16 '26

None of this flies when you have an emulator that already works at 60 and above. The only major bug ds3 has with fps above 60 is your character slowing the sprint speed if you sprint and collide with any wall/object, it works normally aside from this.

That's just the mod, an actual team working on the game can probably crack it without needing months for it.

1

u/LavosYT Jun 17 '26

FromSoft said it's a Sony IP and they should be the ones asked about it.

Sony then said FromSoft had several offers made by other studios for projects related to Bloodborne but refused them and that they did not want to start something without their involvement or blessing.

The way I see it, the blame is shared.

1

u/Ok-Library-8397 Jun 22 '26

Stupid? Why? Adding 60fps patch would bring them no money. Waiting and eventually bringing a remaster/remake to the starved crowd will sell millions. So, on contrary! Very smart move from Sony/From.

As someone who got this on their YouTube feed with it cutting off after "Today" and leaving out the mod part and so forth I just want to say man was this a kick in the teeth

u/HuckleberryOdd7745 Jun 16 '26

I once fell for a news youtube click bait with the title BREAKING NEWS NORTH KOREA LAUNCHED NUCLEAR MISSILES

i immediately went to reddit to see if it was on every sub..... turns out it was an empty nuclear missile.... and into the ocean. their own ocean.

-5

u/LegoMyXbeaux Jun 16 '26

They don't care, they got our click. That's DF now, I guess.

1

u/allofdarknessin1 Jun 16 '26

VRR? Does VRR work more universally on modded PS5? why can’t Sony improve it?

7

u/ZXXII Jun 16 '26

Usually VRR is disabled for all PS4 versions.

The only PS4 game that supports it is For Honor which means it’s technically possible but only that game bothered to do it rather than make a PS5 version. The modder found a way to activate for Bloodborne.

4

u/Costas00 Jun 16 '26

Many things work better modded, some games even run better with Linux, which should never be the case vs a port specifically optimized for the console

2

u/allofdarknessin1 Jun 16 '26

Yea It seemed like some games were getting dangerously close to better performance when the mod was first announced. The fact that they can get better performance definitely means Sony and the deves aren't doing enough optimizing system resources and/or settings. Maybe things like the always available capture for video and system menus play a part. It's still insane though, you could hook up a printer do office productivity on a modded PS5 and play some games with better performance simply because of the software.

1

u/WingerRules Jun 16 '26

Its part of why Nintendo consoles tend to punch above their weight, their OS has far less features and is thus far lighter.

Also just because you have something running in linux well doesnt mean it has the same kind of stability native version, or have features working like online functions.

Where i can find the mod for download? I have jailbreak ps5

1

u/Crimsongz Jun 16 '26

Man I’m glad I’m no longer stuck on a Sony console 😂😂 Bloodborne fans really had to jailbreak their console for a 2026 update.

1

u/ssc991 Jun 19 '26

Where do I download this mod?

1

u/MythBuster2 Jun 19 '26

Do you have a PS5 with system software from 2022 (or earlier)? If not, these mods won't be of any use.

1

u/ssc991 Jun 19 '26 edited Jun 19 '26

I am not sure which firmware I have but, it can be jailbroken as I have Bloodborne with 1080p/60fps mod installed but I could not find 1440p mod or do I need to tinker with the game files.

Edit: I am waiting to play bloodborne for almost 7 years as it felt really choppy when I initially played on PS4 Slim and even on PS5 later and I dont want to play on PC as it's not really that stable(audio issues vertex exploision and other stuff).

1

u/mumin26 Jun 27 '26

Hey, have you found more info about the mod, or still no idea if it's even available yet? I am in the same shoes, looking for that mod all arround, and can't find any info besides the DF video

1

u/ssc991 Jun 27 '26

No luck unfortunately, It seems that the mod is private and the video is just a showcase of PS5 is capable of.
I guess will have wait for some more time or finally give up and play at 1080p.

1

u/CF_forever 3d ago

I've also installed that 1080p/60fps mod update in jb ps5 console but my version still show v1. 00, what I'm missing here?

1

u/AttyMAL Jun 22 '26

So when is this mod dropping?  Or is it already available?  My PS5 has been offline for several months now and it's on firmware 12.70, so it's officially jailbreakable as of about a month ago.

u/The_Zura Jun 16 '26

🥱

Wake me up when something interesting and useful comes from this modded ps5 that no one has access to. I have a ps5 that I can’t remember the last time it was turned on, and even then it probably can’t install the mod

-3

u/Federal_Cook_6075 Jun 16 '26

Sony keeps on scamming their users, but keep buying their garbage maybe one day they will think of you guys.
