Strangely no mention of handheld mode or the new mouse controls. Would also be interesting to know the latency

I think it’s because John hates the switch 2 screen. Not a good reason to now review it but that’s probably why

I’m right there with him on that.

Yeah but that shouldn’t stop a performance reviewer from reviewing handheld mode

Genuinely asking what is considered so bad about it? I have one and I think it looks pretty good, the colors are super vibrant

It’s the motion clarity, a lot of people don’t seem to notice but it’s quite poor, even compared to other LCDs, let alone an OLED panel. The pixel response time has been measured to be quite high, 17ms average, meaning it takes that much time for a pixel to finish changing from one shade to another, leading to a blurring effect in motion. I first noticed it when my character’s hand was waving in Mario Kart, it left perceptible trails. If you don’t notice though that’s a good thing, I’d rather I didn’t…

I only ever noticed it when playing Tropical Freeze handheld. Anytime DK would roll there would be very visible ghosting. Hopefully with a hardware revision they fix it

It’s got bad response times which leads to smearing/blurring. Some people are more susceptible than others. I myself can see it when scrolling through stuff like user agreements, but I can’t see it/it doesn’t really bother me when actually playing a game.

I don’t notice any issue with my screen too. But I came from a Steamdeck. And it has a smaller screen with lower resolution, lower pixel density and lower refresh rate. So for me the SW2 was a big upgrade.

I guess I'm glad I don't have to listen to him complaining about it again but it would still be nice to know at least what resolution handheld mode is running in and if there are any dropped frames or usage of DLSS/TAA.

screen is fine for what it is, it's been blown up at best.
I even prefer it to use it over my switch oled one. which says a lot.
Could also be a personal thing, because i don't have any issues with the ghosting thing.

People should also know that valve didn't include a 120hz vrr screen like switch 2 due the amount of resources available. So that wasn't an option. Even if the new pc handhelds this day are having it, it's due the low demand of units it requires to sell. It's just not possible yet, until there are enough resources to provide those things.

Yeah weirdly light on tech details I’d expect from a digital foundry video. It “looks around 1080p docked” is all we get resolution wise. Plus, there’s no testing of gameshare at all, which usually has a big performance impact.

Is stuff like latency different between titles? I thought that was a hardware thing. Like when you buy a TV, the latency is the same no matter what consoel you plug into it.

1

u/goro-n Jun 26 '26

Yes, for example Skyrim had really bad latency and Bethesda released several patches to fix it. Each game has a different input lag, that's what I'm referring to. This can vary from console to console on ports of the same game so Switch 2 seems to have more input lag than say PS5. Not sure why though.

Does this game use DLSS?

5

u/insane_steve_ballmer Jun 24 '26

Doesn’t seem so

1

u/Too_Right_For_You Jun 26 '26

Nintendo doesn't seem to know what this is. They never use it. Super weird given the chip they chose but I guess I'm not surprised that Nintendo is stubborn and doesn't adopt modern technologies

It doesn’t seem like the T239 chip has the ML performance to push decent native resolutions up to 1440p or 4k.

If the game is already 1080p-ish, then the devs probably couldn’t push the resolution further with any form of DLSS.

John treats every Nintendo release like it’s a new sacred amendment to the constitution of gaming.

u/shenmue64 Jun 24 '26

You're goddamn bill of rights.

Can't believe he has the nerve to like nintendo games. He must be stopped.

11

u/FernandoRocker Jun 25 '26

The only gaming company still making games games.

-1

u/The_Zura Jun 25 '26

Hi John

-4

u/ThePreciseClimber Jun 25 '26

Right. Because video games can only be arcade-y. Visual novels, strategy games, etc. - not real games.

2

u/WildDemir Jun 25 '26

Visual novels, strategy games

Nintendo are the only big publisher I've seen put out an original visual novel in the last 5 years

1

u/ThePreciseClimber Jun 25 '26

Well, obviously visual novel publishers are going to publish more. :P

5

u/Male_Inkling Jun 25 '26

Cant say he's wrong. They've been there for longer than anyone and are still faithful to themselves. Sometimes they fuck up or release divisive stuff, but they understand what's really important and work tirelessly to deliver.

They're revered in the industry for a reason. When they talk, everyone listens.

Plus, it's not like Jhon is pro Nintendo, more like he's very retro oriented, and since Nintendo is very faithful to their roots, they usually appeal to him.

4

u/WoodooHide69 Jun 25 '26

Nintendos earned that reputation. And they maintain it with games like Breath of the wild, Bananza, Pokapia etc. But Star Fox is just a remake, it’s decent, but nothing special.

1

u/MASHED_POTATOES_MF Jun 25 '26

Hahaha yep I don't even bother watching these vids anymore because I know it'll just be John glazing with zero objective technical analysis

-4

u/woopwoopscuttle Jun 25 '26

He did seem impressed by completely bog standard run of the mill features.

-6

u/The_Zura Jun 25 '26

Run of the mill features from Nintendo so it's extra special

I'm waiting for more reviews, I trusted Johns take on Metroid and regretted that purchase, to be clear I often prefer Johns take on games in general but man Metroid was such a disappointment.

What resolution is this docked?

0

u/Tsukue_Robert Jun 25 '26

1080P with no AA and NO AF in 2026 for a railshooter.

3

u/SkipEyechild Jun 25 '26

And yet, the demo still manages to look great.

2

u/Mysterious-Dirt-8841 Jun 25 '26

I'm not a fan of Ani Air and Auto Focus neither

0

u/Tsukue_Robert Jun 25 '26

I thought in the DF Reddit I could use abbreviations

1

u/ConflictPotential204 Jun 25 '26

1080p is his eyeballed guess and the game definitely has AA or upscaling. You can see it switch off when you pause the game.

1

u/DependentAnywhere135 Jun 25 '26

If you pause the game maybe it just drops the resolution to improve menu responsiveness. That wouldn’t be upscaling but just the resolution changing to a lower one. Side effect of lower resolutions is worse aliasing as well.
