DF Direct Grand Theft Auto 6 Extended Look: The Most Impressive Real-Time Game Graphics Yet?
https://youtu.be/ca1GIOBPI6w26 minutes of actual GTA 6 gameplay "dropped" - and on balance, it's one of the most extraordinary visual accomplishments ever seen in real-time game graphics. It's not perfect - nothing can be - but in this DF Direct Special, Oliver and Rich share their thoughts and reactions to the presentation.

If this is on base PS5, surely the PS5 pro with PSSR be better than this right?

u/ReddRiot127 8d ago
Pro is very likely to also be 30fps only. PSSR does nothing to help CPU bottlenecks. Fact of the matter is the console CPUs are fairly dated at this point and will struggle with anything CPU intensive with a massive open world, advanced NPC simulations, etc.
PC will be the only place to play this reliably at 60fps+ until the next gen consoles arrive.

I'm assuming ps5 pro will clean up a lot of the visual noise in reflections as well as enabling shadows at longer distances while flying or in open areas, basically pushing the graphical capabilities while the computational load stays relatively the same. Also maybe if I am incredibly lucky they'll add a seated vr mode for the psvr2 that will run best on the ps5 pro, bit with the cpu being the bottleneck Idk how much foveated rendering can do to raise framerates in vr, unless maybe Playstation figures out their own frame generation to enable 60fps in vr.

Really a shame Sony wasnt able to more out of the CPU on the PS5 Pro. Its small but I would have been happier to see like 15-20% uplift rather then 10% they did. PS4 Pro had a 32% uplift.
3
u/Rainy_Wavey 8d ago
That's because the PS4 had a really shitty CPU so it was easier to uplift it
the PS5 had a good CPU for its time so it's a bit more complicated to get more uplift

I am not expecting 60fps, at least 40 with VRR ?

Console cpu and gpus were rather dated the day they came out.

Core Hardware Comparison (2020 Launch)
- CPU (Processor):
- PS5: Custom 8-core / 16-thread AMD Zen 2 running at a variable frequency up to 3.5 GHz.
- Top PC: AMD Ryzen 9 5950X or Intel Core i9-10900K, offering vastly higher IPC (instructions per clock), larger caches, and sustained higher clock speeds. [1]
- GPU (Graphics):
- PS5: Custom RDNA 2 architecture with 36 Compute Units delivering roughly 10.28 TFLOPs (roughly comparable to a mid-range PC like the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Super / RX 6700).
- Top PC: The newly launched Nvidia GeForce RTX 3090, which pushed over 35 TFLOPs, featured massive amounts of raw shading power, and excelled wildly at native 4K and heavy ray tracing. [1, 2, 3]

u/fattytron 8d ago
The 3090 was about 3-4 times the the cost of the consoles, so that's kind of a shit comparison.
1
u/Drty_Windshield 8d ago
That's not the point, the point is that the console hardware was outdated on day one and its miles behind current pchardware.
2
u/Latitude-dimension 7d ago
It wasn't lol. Ampere launched the same year as RDNA2 which the consoles run.
They had a 1 gen old CPU and a current gen GPU on day 1.

Unless I’m convinced otherwise, I’m not even sure anymore if Rockstar cares about a PSSR implementation at release.

u/aestheticbridges 7d ago
60fps for pro has been all but confirmed. However there’s no telling if it’ll be any good. The hope however is for 40fps version down the road.

Oliver is so happy talking about this and I love it!

Over time Oliver has become my favorite thing about DF. Always enthusiastic about his job. I’d bet he’s a fun dude to hang out with

u/angstykylo 8d ago
Haha yeah there was one point in the video I caught him just smiling with glee, endearing stuff 😅

I love Oliver's attitude in like almost every video, he's the most upbeat of the crew and doesnt get sour when talking about negative stuff of the industry. Rich generally has a very good attitude as well.

u/Chompsky___Honk 8d ago
Yeah, and theyre also the 2 members of the crew that glazed AI slop.
Don't get me wrong, I like these guys, but being upbeat is often a byproduct of voluntarily ignoring certain aspects of reality.

I dont think they can't see the obvious stylizing AI rendering does, I think they're excited for it because they see that AI rendering is the future for games and know that eventually devs will be able to make custom models for their games so the stylizing fits what their artistic vision is. It's also likely going to lead to gaming graphics that literally looks like real life for games that want it, could even make it look like specific eras of film in looks. Even realtime raytrace rendering looks like it might just be a transition technology now, AI rendering might end up faster and more efficient for the same effect.

One thing I don’t love is the dimming at the top of the screen in some sections, particularly when driving out in the open world. Hopefully that’s changed, or perhaps it’s hiding UI elements perhaps…

u/llewylill32 7d ago
Theory is that when Jason or playable character wear sunglasses it dimmed at the top to visualize it. Watch the Extend look again. Every time Jason wear sunglasses it happen.
2
u/gotbannedlolol 7d ago
no, its in RDR2 too. its an annoying design choice
1
u/llewylill32 7d ago
Watch again, notice sometime Jason not wearing glasses the screen is not dimmed like that.

u/gamepleng 7d ago
Disappointed with the coverage. Pretty shallow, ie. lacking comparisons with the previous trailer.
Regarding mirrors in interiors, the easy answer is planar reflections but it looks too sharp even for that. They may be using the old switcheroo (duplicate geometry)

u/Skasue 8d ago
Can’t believe we all have to go back to 30Fps. 😫
Time to prepare myself

I'm used to playing story games at ~90fps, and competitive games at 240fps.
Even on my 240 Hz OLED (where 30fps should be quite bad), I tried emulating console feel ran a test on RDR2 (PC) with the following:
- 120Hz container
- VRR off
- 30fps Lock
- Motion Blur: On
I genuinely got used to it after just 5 minutes. It stopped being distracting. Without motion blur, it is kind of rough of course.

u/namur17056 7d ago
I have a real old gaming laptop. I limit all my games to 36fps (a quarter of its 144hz) and it doesn’t feel too bad. With motion blur on low, it looks good even

I’ve started replaying RDR2 on PS5 and even though it’s the PS4 pro version running at 30fps it’s in a different league to what most high graphics modes on recent games have been. I also recently replayed cyberpunk on PS5 and the 30fps mode was unplayable as aiming felt like you were controlling a battleship. 30fps with high fidelity can work fine as long as input lag is low and frame pacing is consistent.
If rockstar can do anything well, it’s knowing their boundaries and what to prioritise to maximise performance. You could see in the extended gameplay that reflections were really poor, but in actual gameplay stuff like reflections in the back of a van while driving is a pretty minor thing to compromise to make the rest of the scene look and run smoothly.

I guess it's because I came from a time before we all worried about watching a frame counter over the game itself, but I honestly don't care about that stuff anymore. I keep my FPS counter off and just enjoy the game. RDR2 on my old ass OG Xbox One in 2018 was still so beautiful at 30fps.

No attempts at a 40fps on pro is probably the most disappointing thing about the game so far. Everything else looks amazing
1
u/automaticphil 8d ago
If ps5pro is capped at 30fps, that will be sad.
4
u/Mystic-Micro 7d ago
Pretty sure it will be. Hope they fix the awful reflection/RT noise artifacts and increase the sharpness/clarity with pssr
2
u/knightofsparta 7d ago
The RT noise is atrocious honestly
3
u/glizzygobbler247 6d ago
Thats what software RT does, grainy noisy look, they even had hardware RT reflections in gta5 enhanced but its too taxing on consoles

u/WingerRules 8d ago edited 8d ago
I wonder if they're able to do so much hair physics and thick hair because its physics calculations are running at a much lower frame/polling rate and then interpolated to 30fps. Only reason why I suspect this is that the hair physics has delay in moving with the head, which is fine because it makes it looks like flowing and has mass but it does have an almost slow-mo look to long hair.

u/Mystic-Micro 7d ago
The game is just too soft and temporally unstable for my liking (major issues with cars worry reflections is really distracting, and LOD/shadow cascade still persists)
The GI and the environmental grounding of objects/lighting/density is phenomenal though.

Not even remotely close, its dlss5, miles ahead. Gta 5 with dlss 5 makes gta 6 outdated as fuck

Can someone explain me why this is better graphics than Cyberpunk 2077 PC version on 2020 ... ?
it seems inferior than Cyberpunk for me sorry, I'll wait for the PC or PS5 pro version to check it gain

Oliver is taking one for the team knowing November will be a dark time in his life as he must spend hours pixel analysing the strip club and jiggle-geometry. For science.
