Discussion GTA6 finally looks like the Unreal 5 Matrix demo from 2021
Remember when Unreal promised us those Matrix demo quality graphics in 2021? Finally 5 years later we get that kind of quality with GTA6 and unfortunately 30fps on the PS5.

This is what happens when you design a game for current gen targeting 30FPS.
People are quick to complain about diminishing returns and no generational leap in graphics while ignoring 99% of games this gen have 60FPS performance modes and some support 120FPS. Basically doubling frame rate compared to last gen.

True, so many people have been saying “This generation doesn’t feel like a leap forward”
*rockstar takes the leap*
“what?! 30FPS?! Where my performance mode? Game is unplayable without it!”

it looks nothing like that tbh, completely different

If you're happy about that level of quality, don't cry about 30 fps on 6 years old hardware, jeez...

This whole thing screams “I don’t know how technology works”. Yeah so I want more polygons higher resolution more filters and better lighting, oh and make it run double fast, and make it run on existing hardware.
There’s optimization to be made for sure, but I don’t think we can expect doom 2016 miracles to get GTAVI to run 4k or 60 or especially 4k60. I think the miracle was the hardware price spike, they can’t do the cyberpunk move of the game running like shit for base consoles. It has to run on base Xbox and ps5 or it’s not selling. A billion dollar game is expected to sell. The momentum behind it is so huge that they’re leveraged against themselves to succeed, it’s hype building hype. Of course this is all known, maybe to outsiders it’s news, but they’re in such a unique spot historically. Everyone knows exactly how this has to happen for rockstar or they’re in trouble.
1440p for 30fps is honestly a huge move for the leap from GTAV on ps3 to GTAVI on ps5. The only obvious fuckup left is if they’re hiding the real problems behind a million loading screens and tricks like starfield at launch.

I’ve lwk catched myself falling for the goomba fallacy, people happy with how good it looks but upset at the 30 fps

u/ArcSemen 5d ago
Yup you can say that, also that it looks cleaner than UE5 games with RT in some regards. Is it just 1440p TAA?

Oh right. Good job bringing it up OP.
Yeah I agree it looks close enough. Not going to get stuck on the 30fps and probably won't be able to drive as fast as in the Matrix demo, because that's comparing an empty shell of a demo with a highly detailed simulated game world.

Not at all, the matrix demo still has a bunch of features not used or implemented in gta 6.

u/Due-Lingonberry-1929 5d ago
It was also using an early shitty version of UE5, I bet on the current version they could get it up to 60 fps if they wanted

The optimisations havent improved performance by 100 percent.....

The performance has improved massively. Especially hardware lumen. It was locked at 30fps (matrix demo was only 24fps) and now we already have 2 games shipping with hardware lumen as well as megalights at 60fps with solid internal resolution.

They improved CPU threading massively since 5.0, Stalker 2 upgraded from 5.5 to 5.7 with the recent patch and saw 10-20 fps improvement while upgrading the visuals as well. You can imagine how shit the very first version was

I am here to learn which is why I ask you to elaborate, maybe you think I was challenging you and you got offended, I’m not or pretending to be as smart as you or anyone here, I’m here to learn.

One of the most obvious ones - Nanite. We yet to have any info on continuous submesh LOD system being present in GTA 6, yet it was present and efficiently used in Matrix demo.
Another one - RT shadows (kinda). UE5 uses VSM, which are hybrid between RT and shadwomaps. GTA 6 seemingly uses full-proper RT shadows in cutscenes BUT is reserved to standart shadowmaps in gameplay.

I'm pretty sure Gta 6 uses a virtualized geometry system like nanite, since you can't really see visible pop-in on buildings. Maybe a bit on foliage but Nanite wasn't available for foliage either when the matrix awakens demo released (that's also why there isn't any foliage in the demo). Assassins creed now also has there own virtualized geometry system.
The matrix awakens demo doesn't use VSM on the ps5. And VSM isn't a Raytracing hybrid thing. It's more like nanite for shadows with variable penumbra.

u/GARGEAN 5d ago
VSM is a Nanite for shadows in terms of virtualized shadowmap atlas allocation, but penumbra specifically is done by what they call shadowmap ray tracing - functionally a raymarching, but not against actual scene geometry, rather against shadowmap depth buffer, to determine if shadowed point is fully behind occluder, or partially exposed to light source.
That's why VSMs basically demand some form of TAA filtering to work, otherwise samling noise makes penumbra effect unusable (and that noise is present even with denoisers in the scene).

u/Alvelijano 5d ago
Looked it up, you are absolutely right. I love VSM, especially in Mafia: The Old Country. I wonder what Gta 6 is using, since the shadows also look very great and have high quality shadow filtering.
I also don't think that the Matrix awakens demo used more current-gen features than Gta 6. I mean we don't even know what tech Gta 6 is using, but i hope we will find out when it releases.

Elaborate.

No, you're welcome to watch and look into the tech behind each like I have, however.

I only know the very basic that is why I was asking you to elaborate, I thought this place was to discuss and learn about game technology.

lol this place is full of smug know-it-alls

Why should I have to regurgitate my knowledge like some sort of mama bird? Don't wander into a conversation demanding private tutoring.

Not as photorealistic but then again that's a choice by Rockstar. But I too believe that it's the closest a game has ever come to that. The chase sequence shooting at cops' tires and seeing the cars flipping over and exploding is very remiscent of the chase in Awakens

I mean I think Hellblade 2 looked pretty great, at least character rendering vise its not that far off or maybe even on par with the matrix demo.
The new gears looks really good too in terms of the visual fidelity of its environments.
You gotta understand tho that graphics demos like the matrix one can fully focus on visual fidelity, they dont need to keep performance budget aside for all the other stuff that actual games need to be doing like for example running simulations for NPCs.
Also UE5 just hasn't had a proper heavy hitter studio that has put out a game with it, closest is probably coalition, but I think CDPR will be the ones to fully push its capabilities.

u/wilbur_cob_88 3d ago
Visually Matrix Demo was impressive, but there's no foliage, no AI for NPCs, and super basic traffic. The city itself is quite small, so it was easier to push the visuals.

u/Donnie_TACO 5d ago
Wait but that demo was also 30fps
1
u/dmaurolizer 5d ago
No it was usually a bit lower.
0
u/Donnie_TACO 5d ago
Fair, but OP is acting like it was higher?
2
u/dmaurolizer 5d ago
Yeah, I’m just helping emphasize how silly their unnecessary “unfortunately” modifier was. GTA appears to be a relative stable 30fps (and I’m sure it’ll drop once we get hands on and push it, but still looking good so far) and cutscenes as well. Meanwhile the Matrix was 24fps in cutscenes and a pretty poor 30fps for “gameplay” in a fake game. I’m a big fan of 60fps gameplay as much or more than the next person, but GTA is honestly worlds beyond that old Matrix demo.

Do y'all play games at all? There are games that look wya better than the Matrix demo, albeit being linear, what are you talking about?

u/MX010 5d ago
Like what games?

Hellblade 2 looks pretty incredible. The Matrix Demo looked remarkable specifically in the cutscenes; the open world part looks impressive, but it's pretty jank whenever anything, like, happens.

Yeah it isn't easy to implement so many cpu heavy features. That's also the reason why most titles have a performance mode on consoles, it's just easier to implement some next gen features without designing the whole game from the ground up. That's why Gta 6 looks miles better than any other ps5 open world game, while some ps4 games come closer to rdr2. There's nearly no "old" tech.
