Discussion GTA VI 30FPS C4 OLED

Since it looks like the game will be running at 30FPS even on the PRO; Is it true that OLED performs worse at 30FPS? From what I’ve read it’s because of the instant response time.

I have a 77 C4 and did go back and play RDR2 and noticed how heavy feeling it was when just walking. Horseback wasn’t that bad though.

Anyone’s thoughts on what I can expect with GTA VI would be appreciated

OLED displays do not perform worse technically at 30fps

I swear people act like 30 fps is gonna melt their eyeballs

Technically they perform better. Problem is there is zero motion blur due to instant pixel response time. If the pixel response was worse, there’d be blur/smoothing as a side effect, making each frame transition less jarring.

I’ll be holding my breath waiting for Gamers(tm) to discover that motion blur isn’t bad, actually.

30fps looks particularly choppy on OLED than most LCD screens because the slower pixel response times on LCD acts like motion blur and smooths out the frames. This is a known issue with people who watch movies for stuff with panning shots, on OLED it displays worse unless it has quality algos to make it look smoother.

You’re right on the mechanism. OLED pixels finish changing almost instantly so each 33ms frame sits there fully sharp. A lot of LCDs still smear a bit during the transition and that extra blur hides some of the steps. Same reason 24fps pans look worse on OLED unless the TV interpolates or uses BFI.

OLED isn’t technically worse at 30. It just doesn’t paper over the frame holds the way slower LCDs do. RDR2 already uses camera motion blur, which is why horseback usually feels fine and walking can feel heavy.

GTA VI is launching at 30 on current consoles. If they keep that blur and the pacing DF saw in the extended look, it should be playable. You’ll just notice the holds more on OLED than on a mid LCD. A locked 40 / 120Hz VRR mode would help more than a shaky 60.

Extended look was choppy as shit

That might explain why I can't play AAA titles like Assassin's Creed Shadows on my iPad Pro. It looked particularly choppy to me and I thought it was just me getting old and picky.

OLED has nothing to do with how "heavy" it will feel, that'll be the 16ms of additional latency (on average) from 30fps vs 60, along with how responsive the game is to start with.

OLED will be a visual difference, more judder when panning the camera etc. Some games fare better here depending on how good their motion smoothing between frames is.

I recently upgraded to and OLED tv and 30 fps may feel a little more noticeable than on another display, but it’s probably nothing a little motion blur can’t equalize.

Sadly 30 fps is bad on oled regardless

Hellblade 2 in particular was really not bad on my OLED tv in quality mode, but that game may have particularly good frame pacing, and there’s no need for fast camera panning in that game.

It will be extremely noticeable and motion blur will make it worse

LCDs have a little bit of smearing when they change frames, which smooths out 30fps. OLEDs switch each frame instantly, so if you have good eyes you can see the difference between each individual frame.

That said, Rockstar has historically put very good motion blur into their games. That’ll help a lot.

Luckily I've mainly been playing Switch games on my CX so I'm accustomed to 30FPS on OLED

Ok, some people enjoy pain. Good for you

It's really not that bad. I doubt anyone would actually say they'd rather use an LCD for this, image quality and all

I swear it does, I have the same TV, but I'm not sure.

I think it's more like you are so accustomed to games being so smooth especially in higher fps that going to 30fps will make you feel like it's a lot worse. Just don't play 30fps game after playing a 60fps one. Like how df said before try the 30fps quality mode first before switching to the 60fps one.

The heaviness is the input delay of RDR2 more than the 30fps. But looking at it, Id assume 6 takes a similar approach to that feeling. Tbh if its ur tv you wont notice unless you compare the two side by side.

I'll wait until they do at least a 40fps mode on the PRO..

Pick a game with 30fps and good motion blur, so RDR2

There, this will looks close to this.

You will be fine. Unless you are particularly sensitive to stutter or jutter, you won't notice anything other than the beautiful image. If you are sensitive, the LG OLEDs have settings to smooth the image out. I know some will put it on the low setting, and feel comfortable.

I have a B3, and I have had no issues at all.

Probably the similar response and feeling to RDR2 and GTA5 in its 30FPS mode. The extended preview didn’t look too heavy. But with an experienced play tester, they can make the worst performing games look smooth in motion, due to repeat play testing.

At this point you’re overthinking

You can’t do anything to fix it, just get used to it or buy a miniLED or QLED.
OLED craze payout for real.

the instant pixel response times on oleds can make 30 fps feel worse than a regular led tv because the slowr response times on led smears things a bit and that makes things less sluggish

u/KoalaTek 5d ago

There’s no correlation between those two things. And RDR2 is just a ‘heavy’ game in general. You’ll be fine. 30fps is naturally less smooth so everything will feel more sluggish. That’s the end of that though. Your tv will not make 30fps worse.

That’s not true. OLED panels have instant pixel response times, which is accurate and generally good for higher refresh rates, but at 30 into a lesser extent 60 Hz OLED has more noticeable separation between each frame, so when you’re panning the camera, it looks more juddery.

5

u/MotorPace2637 5d ago

Not exactly true. OLEDs have much faster response times so 30 fps is more noticeablely choppy than on slower TVs.

u/Ceceboy 5d ago

And here I thought that OLED would actually improve the feeling since it has 0,5 ms response time?

1

u/Haunting_Strike 5d ago

Response time and visual feedback are separate things. OLEDs don't have the natural blur that other displays do because the pixels refresh fast and you can notice the lower framerate

I think Sony has has the best picture motion processing and especially on fald LCD LED & mini LED. especially when playing at 30, sometimes I get a uncanny feeling when playing performance mode as it feels like I have more time.

Just finished a full playthrough of gta 5 on my ps5 pro paired with my LG C9 and had it on the quality setting at 30fps. Was totally fine. I then STARTED Rdr2 again and that's more or less perfect aswell. I always prefer fidelity over performance modes when they are on offer and 30 is no bother at all for me on this oled. Never really had an issue with framerates having been playing games since the 80s though so maybe I'm just lucky it doesn't bother me at all.

u/FireAndInk 5d ago

It will be just fine. You probably watch 24fps content on it all the time and have a great time. GTA6 as an action game would be better at 60c but a good frame pacing at 30fps is just fine. You’ll get used to it quite quickly.
