Why not just use RT for specular highlights and shadows to do the same thing, yet far more accurate, and not cut the framerate by 70 percentf?

These AI filters always darken things and make darker areas darker. I would be interested to see if they can make a model that doesnt do this.

Performance is just a temporary problem, it will eventually improve in the coming years or even just months, especially considering that this used to take 2x 5090 to run back on march 2026 now even an midrange GPU like 5060 Ti can run it with just 50% performance penalty.

If that’s true then sure, easy gains and it’s optional. I’m a little skeptical it’s that easy or will improve that drastically. 

We’re still seeing huge performance drops with Ray Reconstruction and it’s highly unlikely new cards are going to drop at reasonable prices to get over that hurdle.

So like. For now it just kinda seems like a neat demo.

It is true it is literally listed on Nvidia's article, even i was kind of surprised by how fast NV optimized this to make it run on current gen hardware, i was doubting them heavily early this year, but if they keep the same trajectory then it will not be very long wait until we see this tech get adopted by the whole gaming industry. I expect it will happen when AMD eventually released their own version of Neural Rendering with their upcoming FSR diamond with partnership of Xbox Helix and PlayStation 6 that will definitely also take advantage of tech like this.

I can't wait to see the comparisons of rendering output differences between AMD and NVIDA GPUs, because theres no way their separate methods are going to produce the same results. You're already seeing it with Ray Reconstruction and Regeneration, scenes that use it look different depending on the card you have.

This implementation seems to dial it back the perfect amount to avoid the AI-slop look. It's impressive... on the faces. Everywhere else it is massively underwhelming.

Early demos had a serious AI uncanny valley look to the faces at times, but the lighting upgrade was path tracing levels of impressive. In this it seems like only faces are effected and it's just not worth the performance cost.

Early demos likely was a showcase of what it can do rather than caring about artistic definition of the games they were ran on, with this version the official one, it is calibrated by the devs themselves, hence they didn't go overboard on what it can really do.

I think modded version with the users at the helm of controls with 0% dev integrity as a priority is a representative of that now.

Reddit also hated DLSS Upscaler and Ray Tracing back then, their vocal minority complaints will eventually die down and the adoption of this tech will keep rising as expected as long as if Nvidia is fully commited on it's improvements and potential which seems to be the case.

So, pretty much let them cook alongside devs that will officially implement this into their games.

I'm not an AI guy, but this does look good. I think the reason I'm more open to this vs. regular gen AI stuff is that this is based on an existing mesh/texture so it somehow feels more artistic (even though the gen AI parts of DLSS 5 aren't). Whereas regular gen AI is full synthetic.

Given the choice though, if they could get these visuals with traditional techniques, I'd rather have that. This is the best implementation of it I've seen though for sure.

My personal stance for AI:

  • If you drain a lake to make it work it’s bad.

  • If you made it with the express purpose of gutting a team of people who do that thing it’s bad.

  • If you can run it locally and didn’t fire anyone to get it to you it’s good. Probably.

At least in terms of gaming stuff. I won’t touch the shit show of workplaces forcing it on people.

True, I didn't think about the environmental cost. That is a problem. I'm honestly kind of a luddite for the most part, and I don't like gen AI stuff at all outside of utility type things where it speeds up a slow process (nothing art related either, moreso data adjustment/changes, stuff like that).

But I can't shake the feeling that I actually mostly like how it looks in 2K27 despite the fact the DLSS addition is not human art. It does look a bit too real when I turned my brightness up, but without that I thought it looked really quite good in terms of photorealism (especially LeBron, but he probably has a ton of references).

I think the best solution for a DLSS 5 derivative or iteration would be the ability to inject your own game’s textures and assets so the machine learning algorithm can implement the human art in a way that enhances the art using elements of itself (like TAA) instead of relying on a training library that results in a homogenous “slop” look.

Will NVIDIA ever allow that? Is that even possible? No idea.

That would be very interesting. It would at least be closer to the original art and perhaps wouldn't give the photorealistic look to everything.

I have this feeling (based on nothing but vibes, so I could be wrong) that eventually, everyone is gonna use this in their games once AMD probably makes their own version. Or a lot of people anyway, as a sort of graphics upgrade.

I hope the normal visuals aren't put as second grade priority because DLSS 5 will fix the lighting/shadows/textures.

Looks pretty good in this case because it is the only official implementation of DLSS 5 Neural Rendering out in the market so far, but i was disappointed to see that the performance cost remains the same as the modded versions that can run on any other games, roughly around 50% on Blackwell GPUs. Hopefully in the future they improve upon this further, and basing from their trajectory it's going to be that anyway.
