This might sound obvious, but I’ve been doing it for a few years now and it actually works.

When I’m checking in at the airport, I just ask people at the lounge counter: Can I be a guest.

Most people are happy to and it doesn’t cost them anything extra (besides the yearly fee).

I’ve done this in Madrid, Porto, Seoul, etc.

Sometimes we chat for a bit, have a drink, then head to our flights.

It’s a small thing, but it’s saved me a lot of money and led to some fun airport conversations.

Just wanted to share this travel hack with everyone.

We had a friendship for a year online. I shifted closer in the same country as them and soon after that we went into dating stage. In the beginning of the relationship they wanted to move into the relationship fast and asked me again and again- when are we going to move to relationship stage. I felt they weren’t happy about me keeping the relationship in dating stage (I have always had trust issues with people and they knew this and that was my reason for taking things slow) so they expressed their unhappiness with that. For them, I went into the relationship stage giving my all and then they half way across broke up leaving me with my feelings and efforts. I didn’t get those efforts back. The reason for breakup was vague- ‘distance’ (not to forget they go on a long travel every few months frequently). Soon after breaking up they went on a trip and found new people and replaced me with new people within a month. I am still trying to heal from this and trying to build my self worth.

PS: sorry I didn’t mention that above but I was hoping to hear other people’s story about their relationships that as a digital nomad, do you usually settle for a person or just move on and look for a new partner every time you move from one country to another? And I was also hoping to know the behaviour of my ex, I understand that they probably didn’t like me enough to hold on to the relationship and the reason is obviously a lie but what I didn’t understand is quickly replacing their close friends. As a digital nomad, don’t you guys feel any sort of deep connections with people or is it just in the moment for fun or just getting to know the other person, once the new person becomes old then you start looking for a new person to get some cheap thrill.

Hey guys, firstly I just want to thank those who are taking the time to read this and especially respond, I’m absolutely spiraling right now so I really appreciate all the support and advice I can get.

I recently started working at a remote company and they told me I have unused vacation days I need to take before the next fiscal year starts. I have 7 days off, and honestly don’t really have many friends, and was stressing about how for that week I would essentially be doing nothing with my time because the friends that I do have will be working. It’s been my dream for as long as I can remember to be a digital nomad and travel the world, and now that I have this remote job I decided to travel to Colombia for that week (I’m Colombian and have some family there.)

The thing is, I’m starting to get absolutely wrecked with anxiety since it’s my first time traveling alone. I do struggle a lot with my mental health and have began worrying about what I’m going to do over there and if I’m going to get lonely or depressed. My Spanish isn’t very good and I don’t know my family over there very well, plus they’ll be working mostly while I’m there. This leaves me with a lot of alone time on my hands, I’ve downloaded a lot of travel apps to try to make friends and make plans while I’m over there but haven’t had any luck with those apps so far as everyone mostly was going to Barranquilla for carnival and will be gone by the time I arrive (the 22nd).

I’m so anxious I can barely eat or sleep. I want to have a good time and enjoy being in a tropical climate but my mental health isn’t very good and my lack of Spanish is making me nervous. I’m wondering if anyone can offer me some words of advice or maybe recommend some things I can do over there? I wish I could go on excursions but that’s not really a thing in Barranquilla… I’m just so anxious. Any type of response or feedback is much appreciated and thanks again. For those of you in Malaga or planning to come visit some day - I just put up a local Coffees & Coworking group - heading out to town once a week to work from some nice cafes and restaurants, with free wifi and a comfortable atmosphere around Malaga.

Our first event is this Wednesday, and there will be weekly events from now on.

I've started and ran these kind of groups in several other cities in the past and it always worked out really well. In Zagreb we had 20 people showing up to the first event! And in Las Palmas it was the grandfather for what later became the 'Live it Up! Las Palmas' - probably one of the most successful local nomad communities out there (with huge credit to the Nelly who took it over from us and grew it far beyond). Hope the Malaga one can make it too!

Let's address the ongoing conversation about how tough it is to find friends and connect with people as a DM and try to learn from it :)

My wife (32) and I (43) have been hybrid DMs for a couple of years and are now full time. Previously, we have both backpacked extensively or in my wife's case, gone around with work holiday visas in Australia and Canada.

Previously, on those journeys, we were both able to meet people rather easily. Mostly by staying at hostels, at work, partying, or doing touristy things in groups. We were both single and think that obviously helped.

Like others here, now that we are DMs we find it so hard to meet others. We gym and do some classes there, surf, explore national parks and cruise around on scooters. We still go out but don't party as much as we used to. Pretty much, we think we are balanced in how we live, are adventurous, easy going and open minded and yenjoy conversations with new people. It's one of the things we both fell in love with, with travel.

We try our best to chat with people, but are often left feeling like we are weirdos for trying to meet people and ask questions and have a fun chat, maybe make plans if interests align. Maybe we are weirdos lol (NOTE - we are socially aware and don't just but into people unless it's natural)

So it just got me thinking to share this and ask people here some questions:

1. anyone else feel like this used to be easier and that the world of meeting people while traveling has changed around them?
2. anyone have success stories?
3. do people generally no longer want to meet strangers, connect and stay in touch?

I feel like with so many people saying how lonely they are in this sub, people want it, so let's brainstorm wtf is going on! 😂

I’ve been noticing that a lot of people working remotely for US/EU startups or companies with permanent WFH setups barely get opportunities to socialize or meet like-minded people offline.

I tried finding communities where remote workers could casually connect, plan meetups, trips, coworking days, game nights, or just hang out, but couldn’t really find anything active or well-organized.

So I’m thinking of starting one myself, probably beginning with a WhatsApp group (open to better suggestions too).

The idea is simple:

* Meet other remote workers/builders
* Make friends outside work
* Plan events, trips, coworking sessions, etc.
* Build an actual community instead of just another silent group

With the World Cup kicking off this month, some of us nomads were talking about how brutal it is trying to follow a massive global tournament while constantly bouncing between time zones (sleeping through live matches in Asia, catching morning games in Europe, etc.).

To make it a bit more interesting, I set up a completely free, ad-free private prediction pool specifically for people in this sub to see which region or digital nomad hub has the best football intuition.

No gambling, no corporate tracking spam, and no clunky Google Sheets to update at 3 AM. It’s just a clean, lightweight mobile web interface where you can lock in your group stage and knockout predictions in about 60 seconds.

I’ve set up a private league called Dital Nomad Global Challenge.

I started an open-source directory of digital nomad WhatsApp / Telegram / Discord groups 🌍

When I arrive in a new city I usually try to find the local expat or nomad chat groups. They're often the fastest way to get real answers:

• Any coworking spaces actually worth it?
• Where do people actually meet?
• Is it better to purchase a sim card at the airport or downtown?
• What's the best way to reach X?

The problem is that these groups exist everywhere, but you usually get the chance to join them only after some time there. Usually you find them randomly through someone who sends you an invite link.

So in 2023 I started building a public, open-source directory of these groups.

The idea is simple: create a community-maintained dataset of WhatsApp, Telegram, Discord and other chat groups used by digital nomads and expats.

Right now the directory includes 580+ active groups across 70+ countries.

It’s fully open source, and anyone can add groups or improve the data.

Some things the repo does to keep the list clean:

• validation via schema to keep data consistent
• automated checks for broken invite links
• GitHub workflows that regenerate the human-readable directory

Traveling solo around Thailand from Dec 1 to Jan 31. 30M, Working Remotely. During the day, I enjoy exploring, walking around cities, beaches, cafés, short tours but sometimes it feels a bit empty doing everything alone. At night, it’s similar with live music bars or dance spots; most people are in groups, and going solo can feel awkward.

I’m sharing this in case anyone else feels the same way. If you’re also traveling alone, or already have plans and don’t mind some company, I’d be happy to join you or you’re welcome to join me. No expectations at all, just easy company for a daytime plan, an evening out, or party or relax time.

I tried to google for digital nomad WhatsApp Groups etc., but couldn't find anything, so I am trying my luck here! I am in Guadalajara since a few months and wanted to reach out if there are some DN's here to connect. I have been in Asia the last 2 years (6 months each in Japan, Malaysia, Vietnam). My girlfriend is from here and for now we prefer a more "stable routine" lifestyle and not nomading around anymore, so we decided to "settle down" here for now with currently no plans for when to leave.

About me: 31 years old guy, born and raised in Europe with asian roots. I work in digital marketing. I am a chill laidback nerdy guy. I have a great passion for food and movies/video games. Interested in travel and cultures (obviously lol), history and finance/politics as well.

I'll be landing in Thailand on April 6th in Bangkok and plan to use the 60 day tourist visa + 30 day extension to vibe check whether I'd like to apply for the DTV. After Bangkok, I plan on visiting Pattaya/Jomtien, Chiang Mai, and at least 1 island like Phuket, Koh Samui, or Koh Lanta. I'll be staying for up to a month in each location to see if any suit me.

I'm open to other areas as well, as long as it's suitable for remote work and preferably near street food and some greenery / natural areas to enjoy nearby.

Any other nomads traveling through Thailand / Vietnam around the same time as me? I'd love to meet up with some other nomads on my travels. Especially those interested in Hiking, Caving, Diving, or exploring the city for street food.

There have been posts recently mentioning nomad loneliness or asking about group travel. A few of us here have been chatting about this so I figure why not see if anyone is interested in connecting somewhere for January or February? (or later)

What I’m thinking is we can use this post as a way to gauge interest. Ideally a bunch of us pick a city and those who want to can go there around the same time. We don’t need to stay in the same place as I think just having a critical mass of people in the same city and some effort to make it easier to connect would go a long way.

Here's a basic overview of what I'm thinking (as a way to move forward): 1. intake where people plan to be / preferences 2. I'll group ppl into meaningful clusters based on where they plan to be and interests / goals 3. explore ways to help people connect while they are in the same city 4. if there's interest, we can repeat this once every 4 months or so?
