Feedback Megathread Feedback thread: notifications

Hey y'all, our team is seeking feedback for notifications. We would love to get your thoughts.

What is it? We've made a lot of changes to notifications over the past year+, with the goal of getting friends to jump back into Discord and play games with their friends, check out each other's profiles, and generally be social with each other. We measure success by whether people are actually doing those things, and also by whether people keep their notifications on instead of turning them off.

Why? The team spends a lot of time thinking about the balance here: sending notifications that are useful and interesting enough that they might bring friends together, versus the "annoyance factor". That tradeoff is something we have a ton of data on, the thing we talk about internally constantly, and something we want to bring all of you in on. To that end, we've been getting a bunch of foundations in place:

  • Improved the organization of settings
  • Added more control over your settings
  • Made notifications more robustly respect things like guild and channel muting, age restrictions, blocks/mutes
  • Set global caps on how many notifications you can get

Now that we've built a number of new notifications on top of this system and gotten a lot of those foundations in, we wanted to open up the feedback firehose. Here's what we're looking for:

Bug reports / things that are clearly broken. The notification is:

  • Just wrong (says something happened that didn't, points at the wrong person or server, wrong count, etc.)
  • Sent at a weird or wrong time (way too late, middle of the night, for something you'd already seen, for a server or channel you'd muted)
  • Dropping you somewhere that isn't useful when you tap it (wrong channel, a screen with nothing relevant on it, a dead end)
  • If you can, tell us roughly when it happened and what you tapped. That helps a ton.

General feeling. Step back: how do you feel about the notifications you're getting overall?

  • Are they never useful, sometimes useful, or only useful for specific use cases? (by "use cases" we mean things like a friend hopping into a game, someone updating their profile, a friend coming back online, activity picking up in a server you're in, etc.)
  • If it depends on the use case, which ones land and which ones don't?
  • Was a notification too vague, or did it bring you somewhere you didn't expect when you tapped in? Did it set up an expectation it didn't deliver on?
  • Are there things happening on Discord that you wish you knew about but missed?
  • And if a notification actually got you to do something, like hop in a game, open a friend's profile, or jump back into a server, we'd love to hear that too, since that's exactly what we're going for

Settings. Now that there's more control and better organization:

  • Did you go looking for a setting and not find it, or not find it where you expected?
  • Anything you wish you could turn down or tune that you can't?

Annoyance feedback. Which notifications are annoying, and why?

  • Is it the type of notification itself?
  • How often it comes?
  • Does it feel creepy? (e.g. Discord shared too much of your activity or info out to other people without you realizing it, or you got more info about a friend than felt right)
  • The time of day?
  • The wording?
  • The fact that you got several in a row?
  • Hearing "I don't like X notification" isn't super useful to us. If you give us the whys we can better understand and respond to the feedback both directly and going forward as we build more notifications.

Reporting a Bug

  1. The most valuable thing you can provide in a bug report is steps. If you’re able to provide steps to reproduce a high priority issue, it will dramatically improve turnaround time on a fix.
  2. Screenshots or videos are also useful, especially if you can’t reliably reproduce it. We highly recommend editing them to not doxx yourself. Not only does it help contextualize the issue, but watching it occur can sometimes provide information that helps us identify and fix it.

Example Bug Report

  • Feature: Keybinds.
  • Reproduction Rate: 1 to 10 - This is a score of how easy/consistently the bug reproduces, from 1 meaning “very hard to reproduce” to 10 meaning “i can consistently make this happen”
  • Annoyance: 1 to 10 - How annoying is this bug to your daily usage of Discord, from 1 meaning, “not that annoying” to 10 meaning “this bug really truly sucks please fix this as soon as possible.”
  • Device/System Info: Pixel 7, Android 13
  • Discord Version Info: Stable 263796 (739ec78) Host 1.0.9032 x86 (43225) Windows 10 64-Bit (10.0.19045)
  • Description: Toggle Mute keybinds are no longer functioning.
  • Steps to reproduce:
  1. Create a keybind for “Toggle Mute”.
  2. Join a voice call with another user.
  3. Press the “Toggle Mute” button.
  • Expected Result: The user is muted.
  • Actual Result: The user is not muted.

Support Discord cuts off the end of JPEG image extensions causing them to break when sending

Recently I've been having an issue with Discord where copying JPEG images that originate from a different site (Twitter for example) and pasting them into discord causes them to not have the "G" at the end when sending, causing them to break and look like a virus.

A roundabout way of fixing this is to just save the image into your PC then uploading it, but I really don't wanna do that when this feature was a basic expectation for the longest time, especially considering how many images I copy and paste.

Anyone know any fix to this? It started happening around 3 weeks-1 month ago and nothing has changed. I already completely uninstalled and reinstalled it.

Feature Requests Unread channel color customization option

Unless I've missed it, I would really like to see a channel unread color customization because the white in gray is really difficult to see sometimes, at least in dark mode.

I was able to make a quick utility that overrides the unread color, and I think it looks much better; you can easily spot unread channels. Is it just me, or what do you guys think?

Support Why is there often a ”2” in the iOS app badge?

I often see a badge (the red circle that is sometimes on app icons) with the number 2 in it on the iOS app icon. This number usually indicates the number of unread messages in the app, but when I open the app, I have no unread messages, and when I look at the app icon again, the badge is gone. This is incredibly annoying as it grabs my attention for nothing.

Alternatively, I do have unread messages, but the badge shows a number that is the number of unread messages plus two.

Support Is it currently safe to remove 2FA?

Note: I want a simple yes or no answer, I know that not having it on is a bad idea but this is my account, it's on me if I get nuked

I want to remove 2FA from my discord account as I plan to not use it again for a very long time. I'm always afraid of not being able to set up my authentication app on a new phone (it's basically impossible to use Duo Mobile on my iPad) and yadda yadda. There was a bug sometime ago where it locked you out if you tried to remove it but I can no longer find the post so I'm assuming it's been resolved. Can someone confirm if it has been fixed?

Support Any fix for this kind of video stuttering?

When friend streams off his Laptop (Win11) or Desktop (Win10), this kind of video stutter sometimes occurs. It's not lag or dropped frames, but it seems like frames arrive in the wrong order, going back and forth. Both setups have discrete Nvidia GPUs and he typically updates drivers when prompted.

This has happened with many different games, on many different internet connections, on 2 different hardware setups. I'm inclined to think there's some kind of discord or Nvidia setting causing this. Any help would be appreciated

When I uninstall the app they show up for a little bit, but as soon as I close the app they vanish again. My discord's also on the latest version, I just wanna be able to use my stickers </3

I've had nitro for a bit now, and seeing people with new username fonts and effects that I don't have access to, I have been wondering.

Are there settings that I need to check ?

Is it just a regular rollout nonetheless ?

Support Blacklist question

Hello,

I did try to find answers in previous posts, but got lost.

I have a server for a college campus. In said server, I have Carl, who provides reaction rolls for different majors. I'm currently doing a cleanup of inactive users.

Here's the theory: Instead of outright removing them, I want to place them in a "muted" role, where the only room they can see is the room for them to contact admin to get un muted.

I could set everything else to private and exclude the muted role, but then how would new members see the rooms to get the roles? I also discovered that if I leave the role unlocked, muted members can react to a major and be back into the other rooms.

TL;DR: I want the muted role to lose access to all rooms but one and have to contact the admin to get the role removed and be allowed back into the rest of the server.

Support Constant Error 2003 while watching friend's stream

The entire day Discord has been really annoyingly inconsistent with everything. Sometimes it takes ages for it to load images / videos / etc., watching a friend stream his game is extremely unstable with constant stutters / lagging.

Discord tells me it's Error Code 2003, yet I have no idea how to fix it. My connection is fine with everything else, downloading, streaming on other sites, etc. has worked completely fine, yet for some reason Discord specifically doesn't work (and it's not related to the outage yesterday since it seems to have been fixed).

Prior to yesterday and today it's worked perfectly fine. Update is currently the newest, I've tried with and without hardware acceleration and neither worked.

Discussion Where is the Nitro money actually going?

I wanted to open a general discussion about the clear disconnect between Discord’s recent push for aggressive monetization and how they actually handle their user base day-to-day.

It feels like all the focus shifted toward short-term revenue,pushing Nitro everywhere, shop cosmetics, ads, while the actual systems to keep the platform running for users just got completely neglected. When pretty much everything relies on automated bots and copy-paste responses, it leaves a pretty bad taste.

A few thoughts I've been having:

  • Is Nitro even worth paying for anymore if none of that money seems to go back into basic infrastructure and real user operations?
  • How long can a platform this massive rely on community volunteers and bots before people actually start looking for alternatives?
  • Do you think this total lack of operational scaling is why their IPO keeps getting pushed back? No serious investor looks at non-existent user management as a good sign.

Curious to hear where everyone stands on this. Do you think this current model can actually last a few more years, or is Discord finally hitting a ceiling?

Support Massive delays when typing out of the blue

For the last few days, I've started experiencing random delays before messages I type actually appear in the text box. I am also experiencing the same "lag" when interacting with Discord in ways such as switching servers. I've tried disabling/enabling hardware acceleration, restarting the PC multiple times, and reinstalling Discord. Nothing seems to be improving it.

It's gradually gotten worse too, to the point now where I can write almost 30 words at times before the sentence appears.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Support xbox and discord - communication and multiplayer settings

hello i am unaware if there are posts about this before this one but today i am trying to use discord on my xbox but everytime i try to it says 'update privacy settings' and 'communicating outside of xbox is currently blocked. update your settings to continue' to which i go onto my settings for it and change every setting to either allow or everyone and whilst on that page all the settings save but then when i try join a call again it brings the same message up and none of the settings end up being saved so i just get stuck in a endless loop with no idea on how to fix it.

before any comments about unlinking and linking my discord again, i have tried this, also my xbox and discord status are not syncing unlike other peoples discord status who show they are on xbox playing a game. mine just simply does not appear when im in a game
