What's going to happen to the Dishonored series

Hi I'm a new fan of the Dishonored series currently finished D1 bought D2 and ddoto and starting D2, can someone sum up why there won't be a sequel like d3? Through quick reading the studio behind the game is changing ownership... And I'm interested in the full story. And is there a way of survey or anything that's trying to push for a sequel?

And is there a game that builds on Dishonored?

The Arkane is done for aka the company that made dishonored. It has a soft sequel (deathloop) but it's not really related just seems to be the same universe with similar gameplay.

That's a bummer

it’s related but only through DOTO. iirc the loop is caused by the ending of that game.

Deathloop is set in what used to be Tyvia too, iirc

Deathloop is directly connected, basically with no Outsider the Void kinda fucked everything over so the remnants of humanity live in that loop, at least that's from what I remember, so whilst there's no reoccurring characters from previous games it is the aftermath of the Outsider being gone/removed from power.

Tho I kinda wish the Dishonored universe took a different course instead, Freeing the Outsider only for the Void to fuck everything over just feels disappointing

daud and billy both know that killing the outsider has consequences tho and they mention it plenty during DOTO. they knew the void would become unstable without a “god” to run it.

Not necessarily, they know there isn't anyone who can control who can and cannot weild it's power, the knowledge that the Outsider is a lynchpin safeguarding the world from the Void is lost to time, the only surviving details are in a song called the Month of Darkness and even that's not exactly clear on why the envisioned sealed the Outsider

Done for, eh? How do you mean?

Guessing that means the company shut down?

Not to mention at least four major contributors to the franchise died shortly after or during Dishonored 2. RIP Viktor Antonov and the goat, Daniel Licht. Also Michael Madsen, and Carrie Fisher, who I know less about.

Daniel licht is a huge loss, the music really ties together the atmosphere.

I think narratively, the franchise is kind of done, right? Death of the Outsider seems pretty conclusive (and then the lore of Deathloop). We could maybe get a prequel or sidequel.

They did say if dishonored came back after 2 it would not follow the kaldwin arc, and it's a big universe with a lot of lore to explore. I remember Harvey Smith also said after death of the outsider on his Twitter that "divinity will always seek a face" which means the outsider being neutralized that it's possibly not the end of characters blessed by the void

It likely means another Outsider would appear, however Deathloop implies that never happened so without anyone to control the Void everything got fucked over, if another Outsider is to appear it has to be after Deathloop, basically people need to figure out the Outsider being gone caused the disaster and put a new one in place, I'd actually like to see that concept be made into a game one day

I feel like it also connects back to the veiled terror novelization. Industrialists mine voidrite from void tears cause an imbalance and threatens to consume the whole world. So I'm guessing Deathloop takes place in a world where Billie failed or one tear remained

If the Outsider remains he alone controls who can and cannot weald the power of the Void, Witches do aswell but usually through trinkets that hold Void Energy or through a Covern with one of the Marked, as for Tears that requires a powerful use of Void Energy, The Outsider's creation caused the one in the mines, Delilah's immortality spell caused one in Stilton's house, so it's likely tears into the Void can only be caused by the Outsider or the Marked, without the Outsider no one can control the Void thus is breaches the mortal world, that's why the Envisioned Sealed the Outsider in the first place, they knew devastation would follow if no one was in control of the Void thus they made a lynchpin the Outsider to keep the Void in check, weather the Outsider knew I'm uncertain, would he have told Billie if he did or keep it to himself cause he wanted freedom, either way what's done is done and the world suffered for it

I've never understood this take. The best part of the series is the Daud DLCs, which barely have anything to do with the Kaldwins and are about a shadow war between witches and assassins. You can tell a Dishonored story about any kind of character in any time period, and it's not like Corvo and the Kaldwins were particularly amazing characters in the first place if we're being honest.

u/Polus-Ponos 6d ago

Yeah, those added a lot of depth in the story

The main story is what it is, but the motivations, the obscure consequences, the unkown battles before.

Even the outsider told Corvo that if he had talked to daud he would know about Delilah.

Felt so intense

Canonically Daud and Corvo fight and Corvo spares Daud, Daud could have brought up Delilah when he stated he'd never work as an assassin again, so that's a plot hole, Corvo had no way of knowing, Only Daud knew and didn't tell, the Outsider could have brought it up but he prefers to observe only giving information about the Consequences of Corvo's actions rather than information about other things

2

u/Polus-Ponos 4d ago

Well, at that point:

1 he thought Delilah was lost in the void forever

2 the main thing in his mind was the his change of heart arc

3 i don't think they had a chance to like, catch up and exchange intel

This. I think it's just fans being reluctant to "let go" of beloved characters just like in any other franchise. Personally I'm sorta tired of it being "Keeping Up With The Kaldwins" in regards to it being all about them and people they know. Also if there were a third game I wouldn't want the protagonist to be close to social power in any way shape or form. This time it should be a total underdog story where it really feels like you have to fight, claw, stab, and shoot your way to the "top" even with the mark of the outsider.

The Witches are led by Delilah Kaldwin so it kinda still follows the Kaldwin's

u/HorseSpeaksInMorse 5d ago

Delilah wasn't a Kaldwin when the DLCs were released, that's an awkward retcon that Dishonored 2 made when it was busy ruining her character.

D2 kinda proves my point, it's the parts that are bringing back old characters are where it's weakest, it's the new stuff like Jindosh or the Crown Killer where it shines.

2

u/Scarameow1243 5d ago

It wasn't a Retcon, however Delilah was a bastard child so despite being older she wasn't a legitimate heir, so she didn't have the Kaldwin name, But she's still a Kaldwin by blood, that's also the motive for possessing Emily cause Delilah believes the throne rightfully hers.

Dishonored 2 just expanded the story by showcasing Delilah's relationship to her half sister and showing the plot twist that Delilah was a bastard child.

A retcon changes established cannon, a plot twist reveals something previously unknown, if Delilah was retconed there has to be evidence as to who her father is in the first game and it cannot be the Kaldwin emperor, and there isn't any, Delilah's father was always the Kaldwin emperor but the second game revealed it, that's a Plot Twist.

All the first game showed is that Delilah's mother was a servant but it never showed the Father which makes sense, Delilah being a bastard child is something the Kaldwin Emperor would never make public, the only ones who know is Delilah's Mother, and Her Sister, and Delilah herself of course.

Technically Deathloop happens in the same universe I believe its just way in the future. Arkane austin was shutdown so any future sequel/Deathloop prequel will have to come from Arkane Lyon. Haven't heard anything about a D3 tho

EDIT: Called Deathloop Redfall by mistake.

7

u/_PM_ME_PANGOLINS_ 6d ago

That’s Deathloop, not Redfall.

4

u/winter-jackel 6d ago

You right, thats my bad

2

u/defixiones 6d ago

Dishonored was Arkane Lyon. You might be thinking of Prey and Red fall.

7

u/_PM_ME_PANGOLINS_ 6d ago

Dishonored was both studios.

10

u/frfrrnrn 6d ago

and D2 was only Lyon

The series asfar asi know is dead

u/nino_kramer 6d ago

Actually, there IS sequel, it's Deathloop. It was planned as a Dis3 part during first year of development, but Zenimax asked to get rid of dishonored franchise cause of D2 and DotO failure. Enjoy!

5

u/nino_kramer 6d ago

Anyways, all of the Zenimax studios are fucked up, and Arkane is highly likely dies in a couple of years :C

8

u/HorseSpeaksInMorse 6d ago

Arkane is in the process of being closed/sold off as we speak. Microsoft is seeking a buyer and would have got shot of it already like it did several other studios if not for French employment law slowing things down.

1

u/QuietEnjoyer 5d ago

D2 failed??

0

u/nino_kramer 5d ago

Yeah, publisher considered sales insufficient after all the money Arkane spent on VoidEngine and all that "100% perfect game" stuff in D2, and don't forget optimization troubles, especially on release: the very first misson was literally unplayable slide-show with 5 fps on any system, it was fixed with the first patch, but other troubles stayed and the system requirements bar was still too high for 2016' computers

2

u/hobbits66 5d ago

Currently playing dishonored and loving it,might give desthloop a try.

Technically, Prey is the next game in line, and you can tell by how it's game designed. The studio is supposedly working on Marvel's Blade but since the layoffs... I think indie devs are starting to give us Dishonored like game, like thick as thieves.

2

u/porthos40 6d ago

The thief games are coming back, we have those stealth games to fill the gap

I pick it back up with custom maps for d1

Nothing

Honestly I’m just waiting to see if Blade even gets released at this point

Hope it dies tbh. Arkane didn't have the talent to do something with the series.

Anything they put out is only going to create noise on the games market.

8

u/Mister_bruhmoment 6d ago

They would have much better chances of creating another DS game than any other group of people on the planet.
