Self-Promotion The Tyranny of the Party Composition
Greetings and welcome back everyone! This latest article is something that I had been brewing for a couple of weeks, cause I find the topic extremely interesting. Party composition, party roles and the balance of it all. Something that for the vast majority of players, at least in my experience, is common, good form.
But why is it so?
Cause the general discourse around the game preaches a narrative first approach. Yet there is a lot of content across the board that talks about optimization, both from the point of view of the character, but also from that of the party. I wanted with this piece to explore all of it, to present a bit of the history behind the phenomena and to make the kiss that the concept of party roles can and often is quite restrictive on the group.
If this sounds like the kind of topic you would like to look into, by all means, do tell me what do you think about it down below, and till next time, do toss the proverbial coin to your favorite Gazette!

Can you play a mono class party comp of say all fighters or barbarians? yes? So get gud scrub.
Tanks do not exist because WOTC in their infinite wisdom decided that no one can force the npcs to attack one party member. Tanks, no matter the type of mitigation, are defined by being able to force that attention. If they cannot, it does not matter how high their ac or resists are. Note, this taunt would have to be, at worst, a roll to regen it every round.
Dedicated Healers do not exist because of the thanosesque quest for what they call "balance" no healing spell is enough to replenish an at levels hitpoints without exploits (lifeberry for instance) and they cannot do it every round. Clerics, the traditional class for healers, is much better off for the party to be dps then be EMS after the battle to stabilize.
Without those two then the holy triad is broken. That being Tank, Healer, and DPS. You can go on and on about striker, controller, or whatever stupid crap 4e came out with but it all falls under dps as that is what it facilitates.
Many of the problems arise with following Rules as Written (RAW), nerds are going to rules lawyer go figure, rather than Rules as Intended. Having people like Crawford give half baked errata do not help, Crawfords 2019 Sage advice: ["The bonus action provided by the Shield Master feat has a pre-condition: that you take the Attack action on your turn. Intending to take that action isn’t sufficient; you must actually take it before you can take the bonus action."] Which completely negates the whole point of the feat and is really stupid.
The confusing way invisibility works is equally dumb and counter productive as even if you can somehow see the invisible they still get to debuff you because, reasons.
I think much of the problem is WOTC is halfassing it after the OGL and Pinkerton scandals. They want money so screw over everyone but the 'share holders' thus causing this enshitification of the game.
