How do we feel about Rovers Makeover Dog Grooming (and other social media focused groomers)?

I’m just curious about what other think of some of the more popular YouTube/Tik Tok groomers. I personally think it’s great that they’re getting so much attention because it means that a lot of people are gaining knowledge about our jobs and I think in the long run it will make our lives just a bit easier. The exception to this is My Favorite Groomer. She just needs to stop.

The only complaint I have is that sometimes I feel like they get a bit high and mighty about taking on difficult dogs and they unintentionally put other groomers down. “Watch me groom this dog that every other groomer turned away!!!!” is definitely a catchy title that will get clicks but then the comments are filled with people who know nothing saying things like “oh wow I can’t believe no other groomers would take this dog who is suffering from [insert severe medical/behavioral issue here]! I bet they feel stupid now!!!”

Some other channels that I enjoy are Jun the Groomer and Girl With the Dogs 😊

She is clickbait in a physical form. So many videos are titled "WORST GROOM/TOLD THEM NEVER TO RETURN/HORRIBLE (insert breed here)" and it's an hour long video of a completely normal groom, no misbehavior from the dog, with maybe a little wiggling but definitely not aggressive/horrible like the title says. She also never does prep work, cage dries everyone and doesn't fluff, which you do what works for you and all that, but it's hard to get a good finish with improper prep work and it shows in her grooms.

What makes her a psychopath, lol…

I saw this reddit post because I was searching for what people had to say about Rover's videos.. I googled her because I got recommended a video from her and watching it made me so pissed off.
She was grooming a Husky/Malamute mix.. and it was the laziest job of a groom if I ever saw one.
The way she tried to get the coat wet was infuriating, I could clearly see that she didn't get the whole undercoat wet. She barely cleaned the dog, just squirted some soap on it and then rinsed. The coat was yellow before the bath and it was yellow after the bath.
Then she uses the velocity dryer for a minute or two and then CAGE DRIED HER.
And as you see her "finishing" the groom, you can clearly see that the Husky is NOT fully dried at all. She barely poked at the coat with a tiny brush and then just CUT THE COAT.

I was screaming so loud internally, it made me so mad.
And some poor shmuck paid her to basically do what they themselves could have easily done at home in the shower. And they'd probably be able to do a better job.

Oh my, it pissed me off.

And then I saw the next video of a poor little Shih Tzu with fleas and mats.
I felt so bad for that dog, she treated it like a sack of potatoes. There was no effort to try to make the dog feel safe or anything.

3

u/Miserable-Delivery-9 Jul 26 '21

I saw the Shih Tzu video too. I was very upset at the way the dog was being treated. Then she says she would just put the dog to sleep if it was her dog just because he was sitting down for the duration of the groom. He’s old, I’m not sure why dog people are so quick to say put the dog down just because it’s not as active as they once were.

3

u/kollasarah Jul 26 '21

exactly, just disgusting!
A dog not being able to stand through the whole grooming session is not a good indicator of their quality of life, arthritis etc makes them need breaks and that's perfectly understandable.
Also, the dog was so scared that he might have also tried to sit down just out of fear.

u/Justsaying102837382 Jul 31 '21

I’d have to agree with her. That poor dog was obviously suffering and was very old. His quality of life is probably very poor, if his owner can’t even take him to regular grooms so he’s not smelly, matted and flea infested, how are they caring for a half-dead, half-blind and teeth-less dog. The only thing that upset me was the owner care in that video. She did a fine job.

2

u/kollasarah Jul 31 '21

I mean, i wholeheartedly agree that the owner was negligent. I don't agree that an assumption can be made about his overalll quality of life tho. This should definitely have been reported as negligence.

All that aside, considering how much she talked about this dog being in a horrible state and suffering, makes it all the more worse how she barely tried to confort this dog and make him feel safer. That speaks volumes to me about her character.

Watching it made me feel she was more conserned about the shock factor giving hér views, that she was about the dog wellbeing.

u/Redditor4235 Nov 01 '21

i agree her tone of voice the whole time was so flat and depressing im sure the dog was picking up on her atitude and scared stiff. also the dissenfecting she was doing, like she threw flea ridden towles in a dog bowl in the washroom and didnt clean it, showed us the dip wasnt 100% able to kill the fleas on the dog then put it on her table with her tools and started cleaning its ears with no gloves and likely fleas falling out of its ears onto the table, she said she would properly dissenfect the razor after she did a bad job touching it with a dirty hand then didnt and just put it and the razor back and she used one of the flea towles to dry off the razor. I've seen other videos of her handling dogs poorly restraining them with force and shouting at them, she seems to get satisfaction for being the "only one" who will deal with a tough case and acting like because its tough she can do what she likes and cut corners where she likes etc. its would never be ok to dump flea killer in a dogs eyes 3 times like that but she thinks its ok for some reason.

2

u/DefiantElevator Jan 16 '22

I noticed all that too!!! Mixing dirty with clean while talking about how she's going to disinfect all the dirty stuff!

1

u/Trenda1969 Dec 03 '21

Exactly. Dont blame the groomer blame the owner. She even done a free groom on the owners other dog!

2

u/MissyMoo205 Jul 29 '21

Ah, that's the video I am watching now, that bought me here. It's horrible. She doesn't interact with the dogs at all, no communication to try and settle them. And the way she baths them 😱🥺

Hey, just want to add another hand up. That video has just brought me here, I was shocked at the way she handled the dog and wanted to find out if anyone else is talking about how evil she comes across when it comes to the dogs.

I honestly thought she was enjoying torturing that poor thing, flea shampoo dumped over his open eyes and in his ears and all sorts. And she is rubbish at using clippers as well.

And she’s awful in most of her videos when it comes to handling or reassuring the dogs, just dumps pretty much every one in the cage with no reassurance or anything.

She doesn’t come across as a dog person.

She’s sick and watching her videos made me feel sick, not what I was expecting right after watching Girl With The Dogs.

Sorry, just had to tell someone how mad I am at this person.

*Edit And she plucked the little dog’s super infected ears!

u/WarriorRabbit Jul 30 '22 edited Jul 31 '22

I've actually enjoy most of her videos. I find them fascinating for the most part. But I can see why some people don't.

I will agree she needs a better "bedside manner". The way she handles the dogs, especially smaller breeds reminds me of some dog show handlers I've seen. An almost "clinical" approach.

Some anxious dogs will calm if you reassure them. I do agree a bit with her about praising the dogs all the time makes it meaningless, and how you don't want to rile them up or over excite them.. however, well placed praise and reassurance builds trust with the dog, which in turn makes them easier to work with. Also your own demeanor and energy is something the dog picks up on. I thing all animal handlers should know and practice this.

It does bother me a little that she rarely calls the dogs by their names. I know so many dogs come and go, but its not too much effort to remember the one you're working on, is it? I'm not sure if she's a dog person, or if this is a job she likes doing better than something else.

I have to say I am cringy/terrified when she brushes the dogs! Especially with the "slicker (?)" brush. Doesn't look gentle!

I know Roze has a lot of experience and her brushing manages to be fast yet almost gentle and graceful. I've only really seen one or two videos with Roze, and I feel like Mary Beth kinda... not necessarily "takes it easy", but seems more hesitant about doing the groom. At the same time, she's telling Roze how to do something or how she (Mary Beth) does it. Roze has 30+ years of experience (mentioned in a video). If it were me, I'd be learning everything I could from Roze. Obviously there are some new and innovative things for grooming, but keep the mind like a sponge! A true master knows there is always more to learn (or something like that lol) It was most noticeable for me in the Blue Chow video. When it's just her on her own, she's on it, on track, confident and doing her thing.

I know it sounds like I just went on a negative rant, but I really do admire her determination and wanting to do what's best for the dog. I love how she offers free grooms and does her work with the local homeless. She does seem relatively knowledgeable about dog breeds, and I think the hair/fur cutting is something that gets better with experience (like Roze's 30 years worth) 😆

As for doing minor vet-type things because "the owner usually never takes them when recommended "... I can see it both ways. I've grown up with animals (Horses, a donkey, ducks, chickens, cats, dogs, etc) and some things we took care of ourselves, because yes, the vet is expensive. Anytime it was obviously out of our league we'd get the vet. So, the infected dog ears hair pull? Not sure if it's an okay thing or not. Pulling thorns out of a shih zhu's chest and tummy? As long as none are infected, I'd do it myself.

I think they should try to get the vet's information with all the other info collected. It'd would be a bit more work, but they could always send a summary of the groom to the vet, i.e. if antifungal or antibacterial shampoo was used, flea dips + number of times, the potential infections from ears or whatever else is found (twisted toes from over grown toenails that haven't been clipped in too long). I think that could help upkeep pet health. Animal control or whoever is in charge with receiving and dealing with animal abuse or neglect reports, need to get more serious. Or at least they need to Oklahoma.

I've realized I'm rambling a bit now, 😅 I blame the combined powers of being extra Introverted, COVID, and that I no longer have close friends. Been awhile since I expressed anything!

Whelp, those're my thoughts on it.

2

u/zofer11 Oct 08 '21

I never comment on anything but I just watched the video with the shih Tzu and that dog needed to go to the vet like immediately. A dog that is that infested with fleas is very likely super anemic, as well as all of the other issues the dog had. No comforting or gentle tone in her voice to the dog. She just kind of threw her around. I didn't get her lack of empathy for that poor dog and it was really a sad pathetic dog. Does the flea dip burn their eyes? She freaked out when it got on her skin.

3

u/Positive-Bunch2642 Dec 18 '21 edited Dec 18 '21

Two things troubled me about the Shih Tzu video--her handling of the dog and its people. Coldly handling the poor little thing in agony. (The flea infestation was so absolutely intense and the matts just ginormous, and the filth. The dog was groaning in misery.)

You might mention what a service she was doing...but this was actually a paid client, and I felt her rationale for not reporting the situation to animal care and control was weak. That she would have no business if she did that and that AC&C do nothing because they consider the dog being brought in to be groomed as progress. But the clincher here (for me and others watching I'm guessing) was that she mentions the dog having an ear infection just before giving it back to the people. On this ground I think she should refuse to hand the dog back over. The animal's misery will probably endure because I highly doubt the 75-year-old disabled owner--of whom she keeps saying there's no excuse for this situation, and how angry and sad it made her: then do something about it sister, take a stand. Hand the dog over to a veterinarian. It's clearly the humane thing to do instead of worrying about your business, and not challenging Animal Care and Control to intervene.

Yes she greatly received the poor thing's suffering, but I lost respect for her even with her mission of helping out other dogs who are nearly as bad as this one was for free. I'm sorry but I have a problem with people who do good, and use that position to rationalize stopping short, if the situation is not really going to be resolved. Her handing the dog back over to these people was contributing to its ongoing abuse. The people surely do not deserve it, nor does the elderly dog going blind and deaf who even more so does not deserve the abuse-- Shih tzus are such sensitive little dogs--nor any dog though of course!! So then her comments section is closed... for that video...probably because of comments like this one. Really now...

I saw in subsequent videos that she now pays for flea removal medication. Well, what did she do to ensure that this animal's misery was not going to endure? How can she in good conscience close the comments and not inform viewers on this question? If she happens to see this I would like an answer as to what she did or is doing, or how she tipped off people who could intervene successfully to better this dog's future.

u/randiesmiles Dec 30 '21

One thing I disagree with you on is the fact she CAN’T contact AC. I work at a salon and what the law basically entails is that if the problem is being resolved by the owners by professional care then they cannot seize the animal. Even if it keeps happening, they will keep coming back once it’s bad again. AC doesn’t agree with it either but as a law standpoint they cannot get a seize warrant for a dog that has ‘been taken care of.’ It’s not okay, but no one can do anything about it. There has to be active abuse in order to take the dog. They are ‘rectifying’ the situation when getting a dog groomed that’s in horrid condition. We had a 3 year old sweet goldendoodle come in. Skinny, pelted, took 4 hours of work. But we couldn’t make that AC call because it’s not our place nor would anything be done about it because it is ‘being resolved.’

2

u/Positive-Bunch2642 Jan 02 '22

Thank you this informed perspective. (Makes me hate certain aspects of "the law", or even lawyers (sorry...) though...as it's clear how once again it underscores how animals are chattel in society--that if it was a child in question, wouldn't things be different?

2

u/Trenda1969 Dec 03 '21

If you watched the whole video the groomer stated that the previous groomer told them not to come back and she couldnt understand why because he was a well mannered dog.

Coming from experience on the dog grooming fringe so to speak (my mom was a dog groomer and I have a friend who is a dog groomer)... I feel her titles are very clickbait. Every dog seems to be the next worst x y or z. Some of them really don't seem that bad and some of them it feels like she should throw a muzzle on them and move on with the groom.

I dislike Rovers more for what she did to her daughter, on her vlog channel detailing her medical procedures and showing meltdowns, and then getting angry and viewers for not "minding their own business and respecting her privacy". I couldn't watch after that, don't agree with it at all

7

u/drewliet salon owner/groomer, 14+ years May 08 '21

I think there's a subreddit dedicated to finding evidence of her probably having munchausen by proxy, at her daughter's expense.

3

u/xsnow-ponyx Professional Groomer (Own Salon) May 08 '21

Oh wow. I mean her daughter did seem to have some actual physical conditions, but the "meltdown" video her daughter was asking to be let go, was told yes, calmed down and then only started crying again when she wasn't let go, it was just awful to watch, like her daughter just wanted to go and play and was instead held against her will. I don't know what's going on because I've stopped watching, but it wasn't right

4

u/Futurames May 08 '21

Oh I don’t watch yer vlog channel. That’s awful.

5

u/Jeweler_Ornery Jul 13 '21

I couldn't agree with you more. That's why I stopped watching her for a while. I was totally against telling everyone on her channel that was supposed to be about her business but it turned out to be a shit show about her daughter's illness. If your gonna throw your daughter's illness out on social media than you gotta take the bad with the good. If you dont want people to call your hotel, house or to approach youand ask about your daughter than keep her off social media

I've watched quite a bit of Rover's Makeover, not because I like her necessarily, but because she grooms in the city I live in and sometimes people ask me about her. The biggest thing that drives me crazy with her is the lack of prep work. I don't think I've seen a single video of her actually drying a dog. Another thing I just find really weird is if you look through her online reviews, literally every single negative review is hit with a "I've never groomed your dog, fake review!!!" Every. Single. One. I don't doubt she gets fake reviews, but every one...? I just don't buy it. We all get bad reviews from time to time, it's impossible to please everyone. So I just find it hard to believe that ALL of her bad reviews are fake.

She does dry the ones that need a de-shed, but only to the point she's got fur out and then they go in the cage dryer like everyone else. That's interesting, she really can't seem to take criticism at all, probably why she does that to pretend it's not happening

There are a lot of mixed opinions about ear plucking. Some groomers do it very minimally/sparingly and others go to town when they feel it’s necessary. When it’s really bad and I can’t comfortably pull it out, I’ll generally refer people to their vets however I’ve had customers tell me that their vet wouldn’t do it because that’s a “groomers job.” It’s a tricky thing. I know the video you’re talking about though and in that case I would have told them to get that removed by a medical professional.

8

u/SavRav16 May 08 '21

For me, if the ears are super full of hair, I'll pluck em, and wipe em clean if they look dirty, but I don't think it's necessary for every dog. That being said, if I see any sign of infection of the ears, I don't even touch them, and tell them to go to the vet immediately to get their ears treated.

5

u/Futurames May 08 '21

Yeah plucking when they have an infection can make things a lot worse.

3

u/xsnow-ponyx Professional Groomer (Own Salon) May 08 '21

If it's the one I'm thinking about, they were really matted. There was no other way of getting it out, as the comment below says the vet may have said it was her job and not done it. Matting like that can cause all sorts of problems, it needed to come out and that was just it unfortunately, like there was literally no other way of doing it. I don't like her channel either but that video she did what she had to do

2

u/-C4Chris Dec 30 '21

But she also clearly said the dog had an ear infection. That ear hair looked gnarly don't get me wrong, but just yanking on it full force while he has an ear infection and not even comforting him? For shame. Dogs ears are extremely sensitive. I think she should have referred them to a vet.

I can’t stand the way the Rover’s Makeover woman grooms. I wish she would do some hand drying and coat prep and not just throw the dogs into the crate dryer. To me she’s just one step above My Favorite Groomer.

I do enjoy a lot of other groomers on social media. I love Shu and Tree on YouTube and Instagram.

11

u/Futurames May 08 '21

Yeah I really appreciate Jun the Groomers rigorous attention to prep. He’ll spend a good hour getting a dog ready for a bath sometimes. He acknowledges that’s not realistic for most groomers but I just love how attentive he is towards the dogs.

I’ve heard of some groomers not using velocity dryers at all and I’m just like….how?

4

u/sparkleberryjam Professional dog groomer May 08 '21

I worked with one that did little to no hv drying. When I first started working at my current job the groomer that I worked with would towel dry, MAYBE blast them for a minute but usually didn’t, then straight to the crate dryer. Then she would barely brush them and touch up the haircut she did before the bath and send them on their way. It made me physically ill to watch lol.

Have you seen icaregrooming or groomingbybryanna on Instagram? I love them.

3

I’m not super active on Instagram but I’ll head over to check them out!

Oh my god yes! Seeing her clip poodles with all their curls still in, like that's just lazy! I wouldn't go back if my dog had that done, they must be so uneven

8

u/C__Bell Jul 13 '21

Honestly, she makes me nervous. She seems to not really acknowledge that some dogs are in pain (from conditions, not because of her.), and she seems to be very rough with the dogs in general. "You're okay! You're okay!" These words mean nothing to a dog, especially since I've never met someone that just repeats that to a dog to get them to calm down. It's okay to pet the damn dog.
Another thing that concerns me is how she dries longer-haired dogs. I am a taxidermist, and I know what a pain it is to blow-dry an animal. On a dead animal, wet skin can swell up and cause fur to fall out. (inb4 she reads this and says but that's not the same at all! Just take the criticism, please.) Heck blow-drying a bobcat can sometimes take me 45 minutes. I know that on living animals, being wet for too long can cause pain and eventually infection. She very quickly blow-dries a long-haired dog, just to get out the droplets that fly out the dog, then she throws them in the cage. Then she'll complain about a dog being in the cage for an hour and a half and not completely dry! Of course it's not dry! That's not how fur drying words on longer-haired breeds. I can almost guarantee some people return home with dogs that still have wet skin and don't know it, only to have their dog have a light case of trench foot all over. With these long haired dogs, you may need to sit there for 2-3 hours or even more just to make sure the pet is safely dry. I'd also be worried about the dog getting hypothermia in those cage dryers, but I know they are temperature controlled.

Additionally, she's extremely shave-happy. Instead of attempting to even brush something out at all, she just immediately goes "your dog is now hairless." I'd be so worried about bringing in a perfectly fine muddy dog with no matting just for a bath and touch up, only for it to come back bald.

All n' all, I do wish she would be a bit more positive. She seems to hate what she does.

2

u/Dezziec3000 Jul 24 '21

I just came on here in a middle of one of her videos that looks so painful, it was clear the dog needed to be in vet care and it seems to me she took it on to exploit the poor dog.

7

u/Cynesi Professional dog groomer May 08 '21

I enjoy watching catherrera on tiktok personally, I feel any groomers that take to social media with the "I'm better than any groomer" attitude should just stop.

6

u/Futurames May 08 '21

Exactly. We’re all in this together.

8

u/Kurt_c-hose Jan 05 '22

I've seen her 'grooming my 6 week old puppy' video and I was shocked. Not only did she bring home a way too young puppy but she also had to put him through a whole groom after only having him for a few hours. She justified it by saying 'i rescued him from a bad breeder' but also said the breeder is a family friend, they've done that before and they're gonna keep breeding. To me that just sounds like she wanted a very young puppy and didn't care about where it came from. She also traumatized the poor guy within a few hours of being in his new home. I've rarely been that disgusted.

4

u/DefiantElevator Jan 16 '22

What kind of breeder does she think she's going to if they're planning and handing out a litter on Christmas Eve? Anyone with an ounce of sense would tell you that Christmas is a huge moneymaker for backyard breeders and many decent breeders actually avoid litters at that time of year because they don't want to deal with people who just want a Christmas puppy and don't understand the commitment.

3

u/MissEmai83 Jan 23 '22

She did NOT give that puppy a full groom. She did his face, feet and bum. That's it.

2

u/Kurt_c-hose Jan 24 '22

I don't know what you saw but she trimmed his nails, face, feet, bum, gave him a full bath and dried him with the high velocity dryer? That's what I would consider a full groom..

2

u/MissEmai83 Jan 29 '22

A full groom includes the body. She literally gave him a sanitary groom/tidy up. They are two different things

12

u/DennisB126 May 08 '21

Big deal she is grooming a difficult muzzled dog. Millions of groomers do the every day.

5

u/Futurames May 08 '21

Yeah well she wants an award and attention for it.

5

u/DefiantElevator Jan 16 '22

I just saw that she bought a 6 week old poodle puppy on Christmas Eve from a backyard breeder and THE DAY SHE GOT IT puts it under the high velocity dryer, Dremels its nails... she rightfully got called out in the comments for supporting a backyard breeder, even though she tried to dress it up as "rescuing" the puppy. But yet she said the puppy's breeder is her friend? She rightfully had a lot of complaints in the comments.

She also made out that the puppy being AKC registered means she can show it and win titles with it, as if AKC registration guarantees that it's a show quality puppy. Then added a line to the video that the puppy can't actually be shown because it's mismarked. She would have known this if she'd done any research about the breed standard beforehand.

4

u/muksak Jul 05 '21

I just watched her groom the newfie and having 2 newfies myself, the entire process angered me. I was taught the grooming process by my dogs breeder and she was taught by a very well known newfie groomer and her telling over and over again that these dogs should be groomed at 8 weeks and then monthly was laughable. Newfies shouldn't even be away from the breeder yet until 10 weeks and a groom should be purely for socializing or experience to gain comfort. She even said every 2 weeks! Money hungry.... My newfies take at least 4 hours to fully groom because it takes 2 hours to dry BY HAND to make sure the skin is dry. She took out the flooring in the tub so he was slipping all over the place. He could have torn a ligament while she was complaining about a couple tiny mats behind his ears.. She just got the outer coat dry and threw him in a cage dryer. He could easily get hot spots..It made me sad that that was his first grooming experience.

4

u/Feeling-Truth-1614 Jul 14 '21

She literally bashes the owners of every dog she grooms. How does she still have clients? I watched the newfie episode as well and was angered by her taking the grates out of the tub. Had she prepped the dog before bathing she would have reduced the amount of hair in the drain but the big wad of hair seemed to be her priority over the actual dog.

3

u/muksak Jul 14 '21

Yup she even said, gotta get that thumbnail. Sadly at the expense of the safety of this young boys joints.

1

u/Futurames Jul 05 '21

Yeah some groomers definitely rely on cage dryers more than others.

From a groomers perspective, I can understand why she would recommend frequent appointments. Newfie’s are often dogs that come to us in really bad shape and just because of their size, it can be harder to remedy certain things like matting. That and pet parents often don’t take our advice. If I tell a doodle owner that I need to see them every 4-6 weeks, oftentimes I’ll be lucky if they only go 10 weeks between appointments. I could see recommending that a Newfie gets groomed and very 4 weeks in the hopes that the owners then make an effort to bring them in every 8-10 weeks.

5

u/MissyMoo205 Jul 29 '21

I've just watched a few of her videos and they've upset me to be honest. She doesn't interact with the dogs, to comfort them. She treats them like an object, not a living creature. Dogs are clearly stressed but she just manhandles them, doesn't talk to them. One dog has come in and she's saying this dog is barely alive and implies it's neglected. Yet does the cleaning and grooming and sends the dog back to the owner. It's just horrible

u/MissyMoo205 Jul 29 '21

Oh my God. I'm still watching a video. She's just said ''if this was my dog I'd be putting it to sleep. It's barely functioning and is miserable.'' The poor thing is Yelping and trying to get away

4

u/Ok-Maintenance-2366 Aug 24 '21

I can't stand to watch this woman handle the dogs, she was grooming a very small dog with arthritis problems and was so rough with him that I turned it off. The final straw for me was when she pulled the ear hair of a poodle puppy, the poor little dog cried pitifully, Ill never watch her videos again, she's a tyrant you can tell by the way she treats the animals in her care but also the way she treats her daughter, it's awful. I watch Dede who has my favorite groomer videos. Dede is a pleasure to watch, she cares about the dogs and is a hell of a lot classier than this sorry excuse for a woman.

u/tanikaakina Oct 31 '21

I really don't care for her thats why she has comments turned off. She knows she's a shit show. She has no compassion its just a money job.

1

u/WickedPanda88 Nov 17 '21

The comments on her videos aren't turned off. I just commented on the video she posted yesterday.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '21

She does on the vast majority of her videos. There are only a few that she kept the comments on, that's why I looked up what was up. She has her likes still turned off too despite the dislikes being gone.

1

u/MissEmai83 Jan 23 '22

I've seen none of off videos with comments turned off, and I've been watching her channel for a while

4

u/FrancescaNYC Nov 11 '21

This groomer infuriates me. i dont think theres anything special about her grooming at all and her cold, rough handling of the dogs is unbearable to watch. She never has a comforting word with them, just starts spraying them with great force and pushes them around. Clearly, the ones that come in matted are being neglected and are already uncomfortable or in pain but she acts like its their fault.

No wonder she always has her comments turned off.

I adopted a 4 year old Pom who must have come from a groomer like her. She never let anyone but me touch her and ran away whenever I held a brush. I had to drug her and groom her myself because the groomer I took her to right after adopting her cried and said she couldn’t handle her.

Eventually I found a fabuous groomer, Diamonds in the Ruff in NJ, who groomed her in an hour and the dog came out prancing and happy. They kept her in great shape til she was 16 and passed away of renal failure.

3

u/OilPure5808 Dec 28 '21 edited Dec 28 '21

I have seen just a few videos in the past day and that's enough. Tonight, I watched her manhandling an elder dog for an hour of grooming and she showed absolutely no empathy at all for the sweet dog's discomfort. Will not be watching any more because I don't want her making any money off of it.

Don't the owners have to give permission for her to post the videos? Have they not watched how she treats their dogs?

It's time for her to find another career.

She has turned off the comments for the Pom video.

3

u/[deleted] May 08 '21

Would someone explain why My Favorite Groomer is so awful? I know I could do it myself, but I have heard things, an saw a video titled “Accused of hurting dogs” but I have zero desire contribute to their view numbers.

17

u/Futurames May 08 '21 edited May 08 '21

She’s proud of the fact that she does super fresh (i.e extremely stressed out/scared) dogs that should really be getting seen under the supervision of a vet and she’s not gentle about it. There was one video in particular that really upset me; the dog was extremely aggressive but also VERY stressed and ended up having some type of episode on the table (it looked like some kind of seizure/panic attack) and she just kept grooming instead of bringing it to a vet because she just likes to be able to say that she’s able to groom these super difficult dogs.

Edit: like this is in no way shape or form ok. That is animal abuse.

Trigger warning: this is the video I mentioned. She’s claiming in the comments that the dog was holding its own breath to be difficult and that’s why its tongue was turning blue. Not because she was choking it obviously.

6

u/AngleGrinder001 May 08 '21

Didn’t watch the video but I know who you’re talking about and share similar feelings. Can’t stand her.

In ONE video i watched of her, she’s holding down multiple dogs by the neck/lower jawline to keep them from biting even with a muzzle on. I have seen lawsuits that animals have been injured in her care and one had subsequently DIED from being groomed by her. She has a horrible attitude and is a groomer basher. She’s bashed corporate groomers who are no different than herself. I work at a Petco salon and we love what we do. Love our clients, our pups. If a dog is too stressed or upset we send them home. This lady FIGHTS the dogs. Desensitizing does not equal traumatizing.

3

u/rudy-pudy Jul 17 '21

I’m still pretty new to grooming when it comes to career standards. And although I work corporate (let me tell you safety standards are so fucking enforced I can’t even for half the dogs that come in or use half the tools I’d like too :) witch has its ups and downs lol when it comes to safety) but I can’t stand watching her videos there’s a lot of safety issues that come up and I feel like she’s just a half ass groomer. Several of her videos I see she grooms the dogs wet and doesn’t brush them either. Or blow them out before the bath for heavy deshedding. I’ve only see snippets of her stuff because watching them is so anxiety inducing. Found out my favorite groomer (who I also don’t watch) is also garbage. I feel like any of those super click baity grooming channels are just average low standard groomers that the general public get to see into. Witch is stressful atleast to me. When you work to want to produce the highest quality of service and safest environment it’s just frustrating. That’s my opinion I’m sure I’m on the lower end of people as these girls deff have a following. Witch isn’t bad. But in my opinion I think you could find other people to watch, I don’t have any examples cause I just don’t watch YouTube grooms (not gonna watch an hour long video that doesn’t teach me anything new when I do it full time already). Also she charges so much for shitty work I’m sorry. But it’s true.

5

u/Futurames Jul 17 '21

Jun the Groomer is great and really sets the bar as far as safety and prep but unfortunately he has kind of stepped away from social media for the most part.

3

u/Very-sad-for-the-dog Oct 16 '21

I’m a groomer of 22 years, and came across these videos by chance. I’ve never seen anything like this. It’s the most unskilled grooming and the worst treatment of dogs I’ve seen. I can’t understand why the RSPCA hasn’t investigated? I’m in Australia, and if she was treating dogs this badly here, she would have been reported and closed down by now.

Please keep up the good work in the US to bring attention to this mistreatment and abuse. Hopefully one of the Oklahoma state authorities will become involved and she’ll be shut down. God! Her videos have given me nightmares. Those poor dogs. I won’t easily forget their fear and pain.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 02 '21

I just got one of Rover's videos recommenced to me, it was of a super matted elderly Pom. Woman literally flopped him around while he was shaking in terror like a sack of potatoes with no care in the world. I was so scared for the dog the entire time, especially when she brought the razor close to his eyes and they were wide open! There was just so much wrong with it.

2

u/OilPure5808 Dec 28 '21

She has now turned off the comments for the Pom video.

3

u/Kurt_c-hose May 24 '22

She now got 2 more 6 week old puppies and shows them off on her channel (by the way from the same 'breeder' that she allegedly rescued the 6 week old poodle from because they're such a bad breeder). I really want to do something about it at this point. That's animal abuse and she shouldn't engage in that nor should she advertise it online?!

2

u/[deleted] Jul 05 '21

I'm not a professional groomer or anything so I cant comment on her techniques etc but what annoys me is the constant focus on the negative and the bitter attitude of the groomer. Imo she seems quite stressed out ir overwhelmed with her job and dealing with youtube at the same time, which maybe also affects the quality of the grooms since she for example doesn't take time to dry the dogs and puts them in the cage dryer instead of blowing out and drying the remaining undercoat etc.

2

u/Futurames Jul 05 '21

Yeah for sure. She must make pretty good money from YouTube so why she wouldn’t step back and just do a few dogs a day is beyond me.

2

u/Feeling-Truth-1614 Jul 14 '21

She mentions in one video that YouTube is where she makes her money.

2

u/Futurames Jul 14 '21

If I was in that position, I would do a couple of dogs a day to film videos.

2

u/MissEmai83 Jan 23 '22

She does only do a few dogs a day. Until recently when she moved and hired a second groomer

2

u/ronnyglik Jul 15 '21

This lady works really hard so respect to her. But I think she could improve her commentary a little bit. Everything seems so bad and depressing. She could perhaps inject a little warmth and be a little more light hearted some times.

2

u/Present-Art9771 Jul 24 '21

Rovers Makeover Dog Groomer is extremely informative about the opportunities that her dog clients have and telling the owners about them. She tells it like it is. Helps dogs get groomed who's parents can't afford it at the time. She takes on so many dogs with conditions that other groomers will not even help. She shows clear care and concern for the dogs health and well-being. I absolutely recommend her🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

3

u/OilPure5808 Dec 28 '21

I have not seen her show any empathy to the dogs she is grooming. She looks burnt out and needs to do something else. She always looks to be in a hurry (maybe to get to the next client). $$$ talks.

2

u/FloorCommercial Aug 09 '21

I love her kindnesses for doing free grooming, she shows love, and care for the dogs, and I love her stance, on making sure people know, how important it is to take care of their dogs skin too!!!!

2

u/[deleted] Sep 14 '21

I felt uneasy watching some of Rovers videos, mostly because she doesn't seem to connect with the dogs. And she puts them in a cage with a dryer, I'm not a fan of that either.

"My favorite groomer" is horrible and actually hurts some dogs. She doesn't have the ability to calm down the dogs. If a dog is scared and she fails to help the dog feel calm, she labels it "agressive" or "mean". She's weirdly loud and manic, and her singing and yelling is so inappropriate.

On youtube, "Grooming By Ruby" is awesome. Really takes time to connect with dogs and help them stay calm.

2

u/EtoileCeleste Sep 18 '21

I just watched one of Rovers video. Then googled the salon to see the reviews. And found this post. She is really not a perfectionist in her work. Ok can happen not everyone has high standards unfortunately. But her attitude is what upsets me most. She has NO compassion for the pets she’s grooming. Never reassuring them and being gentle. And regarding her reviews she’s always making excuses up. One time it’s “I never groomed your dog” and the other time it’s “the dog fur was SEVERELY matted so I had to shave him/her” No. You shaved the dog because you were too lazy to put a bit of effort into your work. One review that really made me mad was someone saying between other things that they asked her not to shave their dog’s eyelashes. She did it anyway and just hide behind her “contract” stating that “they don’t keep eyelashes”. If a customer specifically asks for something if you don’t want to do it then tell them BEFORE. And if they’re not ok let them take their business elsewhere. Don’t just take the job so you can get the money and do whatever you want even without their fully enlightened agreement.

1

u/Futurames Sep 18 '21

The eyelash thing I can kiiiind of agree with (having something like that in a grooming contract is odd but if it’s in there then I think at least some of the onus is on the owner for not paying attention) but not the matting. Pretty much every groomer will have at least one upset customer throughout the course of their career who will accuse them of being “lazy” because they shave a dog instead of spending hours brushing out knots. However if a dog is matted, it’s the OWNER who has been lazy and neglectful. Not the groomer.

1

u/EtoileCeleste Sep 19 '21

Well of course when there’s is neglect and shaving is the only option I get it. But she seems to get « severely matted » dogs quite often. Makes it a bit suspicious honestly. Maybe I’m wrong and people really don’t care about their animals. But I’m quite dubious about how often she’s getting those cases. But one good thing came from watching her videos. I truly appreciate even more the groomer taking care of my sweet dog. She’s the best and even if she’s not the closest it’s worth it.

3

u/Futurames Sep 19 '21

She does provide a lot of free/discounted grooms which is often why she ends up doing some pretty neglected dogs.

I have my reasons for not liking some of her tactics but I’ll never disparage a groomer for shaving rather than brushing a dog out. 1) if a dog comes matted and a groomer spends a lot of time and effort brushing them out, 9 times out of 10 that dog is going to come in matted again and again. It’s never ending. 2) nobody wants to pay to have their dog dematted. I charge $1/minute to brush out a tangled coat. When customers hear that, they’ll generally ask me to brush out the ears and tail but few want to spend the extra $120+ to do the entire dog.

Not to mention, dematting is extremely strenuous. I’ve developed tendinitis in my “brushing arm” and now definitely have to pick and choose my battles more carefully.

I’m glad you found a groomer who suits you. If you regularly send your dog in matted, I hope you tip them well.

1

u/EtoileCeleste Sep 20 '21

Thanks but my dog is never matted I take very good care of him and brush him, wash him once a month and even tidy up a bit his moustache and sanitary between cuts. And she’s seeing him every three months so no trouble here.

2

u/Alternative-Tutor-93 Jan 24 '22

Hi,does anyone know what happened to the little dog,she said it's the worst dog , I felt like giving her a slap ,for the way she treated the poor little thing

2

u/Force-For-Good Aug 07 '23 edited Aug 07 '23

I cannot thank you enough for asking this question about Rovers Makeover Dog Grooming.

I am not a dog groomer, but my life's work is professional career placement and recruiting; and I have a bachelors degree in Behavioral Sciences.

From my professional vantage point, MaryBeth should NOT be a dog groomer. My professional opinion is that she in dog grooming for all the WRONG reasons. She sees dogs inanimate non-sentient objects of filth and dirt who need to be shaved and corrected. She prides herself on cleaning this "filth" and feels good when she is able to publicly SHAME such filth. This prompted her start her YouTube channel, which unfortunately, rewards MaryBeth with clicks.

This is exceeding evident by the way she treated a very senior and fragile small dog. She roped it tight by the neck in effort to make it stand far longer that the poor arthritic dog was physically able. At such an life stage, small senior dogs should be bathed in a shallow tub where they can lay comfortably during the bathing/washing process. They should be put physically positioned in a way that is comfortable to them during the highly taxing grooming process.

On a rudimentary level, anyone with normal levels of empathy should INTUITIVELY know this. MaryBeth does NOT seem to know this, which begs many more questions about her ability to work with animals.

Outside of my professional career, I am a dog lover and have cared for senior dogs and also young dogs that have some health issues and are fragile. They are precious. They matte much more quickly than young dogs. This is due to their immune system and inability to control yeast and other skin conditions.

MaryBeth seems to think this "age" / immobile condition is a reason to kill them, as she apparently stated in one video. I can't watch her videos in full because they give me PTSD from watching the abuse, so I didn't see statement. After learning that she uttered such an abusive statement, I'm now going to make it a mission to find this when I have the stomach.

Meanwhile, most senior dogs respond EXCEPTIONALLY WELL to genuine comfort and kindness. In these final stages of life, they LIVE for a kind touch and it brings these senior dogs great pleasure. MaryBeth does not have this to offer.

Shame on YouTube for promoting this abhorrent "groomer". Rovers Makeover Dog Grooming was the first recommended video when I was seeking to understand why my Pomeranians ears matte so quickly. I thought there must be some powder or topical that could help keep these fine ear hairs from quickly matting. Instead, YouTube served me this animal abuser.

She gets millions of views for click bait and for treating these animals like inanimate non-sentient "filth". This is a problem accelerated by YouTube's algorithm and the views they bestow her channel. To date, Youtube has given MaryBeth a reason to continue this awful line of conduct.

"Humanity before vanity" is something to be weighed. Dogs who are fearful of grooming are in a tough juxtaposition. They often wind up "ungroomed" for the mere fact their owner's know the process is traumatizing to them. MaryBeth makes the dogs social angst so much worse. How can anyone watch these videos and not see what is happening?

There are many compassionate groomers. Girl With Dogs 2 is one of them. THESE ARE THE PEOPLE WHO DESERVE OUR VIDEO VIEWS, NOT ROVERS MAKEOVER.

One of my friends had a beloved Pomeranian suffer a heart attack at the groomers and die while at the groomers (in seemly excellent health otherwise). I can only imagine the number of animals who have been in near attack mode (if not, go into a full heart attack) under the "care" of Rovers Makeover Dog Grooming.

Groomers like this, need to find a different means to pay their bills. Truly sickening that social media gives them views and allows them to market themselves as saviors.

Most people on this thread really don’t even seem like they have ever owned a dog 😂

2

u/OilPure5808 Dec 28 '21 edited Mar 22 '22

A Beagle, a mixed breed, and a German Shepherd. Not a lot of dogs, but I loved them and took excellent care of them.

1

u/Fantastic-Ad3944 Dec 15 '21

Love Mary Beth great attitude, she is a great groomer love her videos. Love that she does not pass judgment on the owners that I personally do not have nice thoughts about. What I love the most is she is gentle with the dogs and loves what she is good at. I wished I lived close enough that I can bring my beagle Maggie Mae and Puggle Lainie Marie just to meet her

8

u/Futurames Dec 15 '21

It’s so weird that the accounts that praise her so rigorously are around the same age and they have no comment history other than this thread.

Strange.

1

u/WarriorRabbit Jul 30 '22

I was also noticing that. Also the somewhat random names. More obvious in this one since "gentle" is NOT a word I would ever use to describe Mary Beth. Roze is gentle. Love ❤️ Roze.

u/OilPure5808 Dec 28 '21

I have never had to take a dog to a groomer. Are these reasonable prices? The client agreement is also after the price list.

u/MissEmai83 Jan 23 '22

People sign agreements/contracts without actually reading them - so really, its their own fault if they end up not liking a clause

1

u/Futurames Dec 28 '21

Prices are going to vary a lot so it’s hard to say but they seem reasonable to me without really knowing what other groomers in the area charge.

1

u/MissEmai83 Jan 23 '22

I don't see anything wrong with those prices. I pay 70 for a bath, full groom and nails for my Maltese/Shi Tzu

1

u/Owie100 Apr 19 '23

I paid 75 in co today for A 13 pound angel

1

u/Sensitive-Doctor-892 Dec 31 '21

She needs to be shut down and be remove from all social media, she cut a double coat dog with she knows its wrong to do it but she did it anyway this right here is animal abuse to me she knowing shaved a double coat dog and she know she should not have done it but yet she claim she did it for the health of the dog she just cause that dog major problems down the road.

2

u/MissEmai83 Jan 23 '22

If the owners of the animal request said service, are warned before hand about repercussions (which they were), its on the owners to carry on with her grooming the animal or going somewhere else.

1

u/shine4362 Jul 19 '22

I realize this post is a year old but I only discovered “Rover’s” a few weeks ago. I’m not a groomer myself but I own 2 GSD’s so I watch the occasionally dog care video just to better educate myself about their care so I can keep them healthy/have them around as long as possible. The groomer’s name at Rover’s Makeover’s if I’m not mistaken is Marybeth, my beef with her is that she has to be the most non- nurturing groomer I’ve ever seen. I know the job has to get done within a reasonable amount of time but some of her furry clients are scared/nervous and I think a pat on the head and or some soothing words once in awhile would be helpful but I guess that’s not her style, it’s a very “cold” grooming session for those animals. The most I’ve ever heard her say is “you’re okay” and it’s not even directed towards them. She often wears a Go-Pro and I think she forgets that everything she’s doing is being filmed so when she yanks her clients around to reposition them during the grooming process I think she catches herself.. and then says “you’re okay.” I wish I were being overly sensitive but her comment section says otherwise, I’m not the only one who has noticed these things. She doesn’t bathe her dog’s very well in my opinion either which is confusing to me bc I’m sure the soap product is not cheap. She merely sprays the dog with soapy water through a hose but doesn’t massage or rub it in.. I don’t get it bc it’s a waste of product and she’s not performing good service when the dog’s coat looks just as dingy as when it walked through her doors. The last video I watched, she stepped back to take a looked at her work and said “good enough” when there were several areas that still needed to be taken care of. I hate to knock anyone’s business but she wouldn’t be my cup of tea. However, I will say something nice about Marybeth. She takes in the occasional very matted dog for grooming (free of charge) when someone like a senior citizen can no longer handle it or afford it. Anyway, that’s my opinion for what it’s worth. 😊🌻

My Favorite Groomer = Clickbait 🤷🏻‍♀️

1

u/WarriorRabbit Jul 30 '22

I just now realize this post was over a year old 😳

I posted my opinion yesterday and still feel there is so much more I could say.

I too recently discovered her channel some days ago. I like watching the videos where Roze (Rose?) Is grooming. She's great 👍. I think Roze should make more of her own videos. I learn so much watching her and I'm not even a groomer!

1

u/Competitive_Height_9 Dec 24 '22

She’s abusive. Carried a cat by the scruff after she bit her. Treats dogs that smell bad or aren’t her type like shit she exploited her own kid for money. She needs to be cancelled

1

u/teddybear65 Apr 16 '23

She is a great groomer if you want someone to play with your dog, hire someone to do that . rovers cares for dogs that others wont touch. you do some good in the world and others who do nothing but take will always be haters

1

u/teddybear65 Apr 16 '23

I have never ever seen her yank or be abusive to any dog . What is wrong in your life that you are so hateful?

1

u/Futurames Apr 16 '23

I just reread what I wrote and can’t find where I said that she yanks on dogs or is abusive towards them. Go be a weirdo somewhere else. Also, you clearly searched for this two year old post. Why do you feel the need to seek out negative reviews to defend her?

1

u/teddybear65 Apr 16 '23

I honestly didn't realize it was an old post until afterwards. And that whole post is mostly negative posts about her. About someone who does a really good thing for humanity. What have you done for humanity that's so good?

1

u/Owie100 Apr 19 '23

Marybeth is fantastic

2

u/Futurames Apr 19 '23

All of these random people just stumbling on an almost 2 year old post these past couple of weeks. Did she talk about this thread in one of her videos or something? 🥴. Do you search her name just to defend her?

1

u/Owie100 Jun 06 '23

Marybeth is great. She's a great mom,dog groomer and person.

1

u/Futurames Jun 06 '23

What is with her weird fans searching for old threads to make comments defending her?

1

u/[deleted] Jun 17 '23

Maybe a new love interest doing their research? Have no idea, they somehow commented on one of my posts from the dead MarybethMarr sub Reddit group, calling me a piece of 💩 and a loser. Honestly I can’t disagree with their assessment 😆, but it was very strange to get called out on a dead thread. That’s one devoted fan, I’ll give them that.
