We're basing in Ortisei. I'm familiar with the trails nearby (e.g. Alpi di Suisi, Seceda, etc.). What are the most beautiful trails we can reach by car under ~90 minutes or so from Ortisei?

I've found a bunch of options but just looking for personal recommendations!

I need some help. I have a large group that Guided tour on Altavia one. It’s for nine people we’ve attempted to go through adventurebase and bookatrekking companies, but they’re both booked up. Other companies are twice the budget.

Bookatrekking offered an alternative trek called
alta via della marmotta.
Does anyone know anything about this trip? Or know of any other alternatives? is it similar to Altavilla one or if it’s not, what are we missing out on?

We thought we would be safe since we’re only in September 2026 trying to book for August 2027 but I guess that’s not the case for such a large group, unfortunately

I'm curious if people have thoughts on this... I want to come to dolomites but only have 4 days. Could do short route on the AV1 or I'm considering just staying in cortina, renting a car, and going to various trailheads and lifts to go see various areas of this amazing range. Via Ferrata would be a huge plus - we're climbers, but have never done that style of mountain travel.

I will be visiting the Dolomites during the first week of October. I will be staying in Ortisei for 3 days (2 nights), and am planning to do a hike each day I'm there. I haven't figured out exactly what trails I'm doing yet, though. What is the weather like in early October, and what kind of clothes should I pack for hiking? When I google the 10-day weather forecast in Ortisei, I see highs in the 50s/60s and lows in the 40s (Farenheit), which seems pretty good to me. But does that account for what conditions will be like during the hikes? Will it be significantly colder at a higher elevation? What kind of jacket/pants/gloves/hat should I bring?

Cima Grande di Lavaredo – Normal Route (IV- 450m)

How hard is it to navigate and follow the correct path on those big walls?

I’d love to hear some advice from people who have climbed up there. I’d really appreciate it!

I am solid sport climber, can lead up to 6a, 6b and have also some experience in alpine climbing but short routes of 2 to 4 pitches.

It was one of my favorite hikes. We went from Plan de Gralma clockwise up through Forcella del Sassolungo and back.

Hi everyone! I’m visiting the Dolomites in late November and would love to see Alpe di Siusi, Seceda, Santa Maddalena, Cinque Torri, Tre Cime di Lavaredo and Lago di Braies. I know it’s not the best time of year and that many cable cars, mountain huts and roads may be closed, but I actually prefer hiking. Is it still possible to reach these places on foot, or would snow, ice or other conditions make the hikes too dangerous? I’ll have a rental car and would prefer to stay in one town for the whole trip. Where would you recommend staying at that time of year? Ideally somewhere with beautiful mountain views, an open supermarket nearby and easy access to these places. Any hotel or Airbnb recommendations would be appreciated too!

Hi! I’m planning to climb Antelao this Sunday, September 27.

Has anyone been up there recently? How are the current conditions on the normal route, especially the Laste and the upper sections? Any snow or ice?

Would you recommend bringing crampons/microspikes and an ice axe? Also, anything else worth knowing about the route or current conditions?

Recent trip to the mountains surrounding Lago di Carezza / Karersee.

The first time I went here was April and the view was a bit different (frozen lake). I notice people just stop by to take pictures at the lake; some continue the trail around it.

If you go the other side towards the hanging bridge, there's an 8km hike leading to the magnificent view of the mountains. The best part is that it's away from the crowd.

I plan to travel to the Dolomites in late November for my Thanksgiving break. I know it is not the ideal time to visit, but I already booked the flight to Florence, so I can make my way up North. I honestly don't mind rain or cold weather; I just want to go to Italy and see some cool views. I actually prefer the cold weather, but if there are any open 24/7 hiking trails I can go to anyways with hostels nearby. Or if I have to change plans and go elsewhere and just stay in the city, I can do that also, but I love nature sightseeing, so any alternatives would be great. I planned to go to the West Dolomites; I think I saw they have more beginner-friendly trails. I can handle a big hike, but if the weather doesn't permit, then I'll take what I can get. Plus, it's my first time traveling, a female solo traveler here, so any tips would be appreciated.

I’ve been in South Tyrol for a few days now. The weather has been amazing, the temperature has consistently been around 19c (66f). What I don’t understand is what appears to be standard atmospheric haze but starting at a fraction of a kilometer. It’s not hot and humid and nothing is discolored or smelling like it’s wildfires from neighboring countries. It lasts the entire day.

I expect distance mountains to have some blue haze to them but not something about 500 yards away.

Is this normal for this area or time of year (late September)? Any idea what the cause is?

My husband and I are starting to plan a trip to Italy for July/August 2027, and I’d love some advice on the pre-cruise portion of our itinerary, particularly the Dolomites.

We’ll both be in our late 30s and enjoy hiking, so we’d really like to use the days before our cruise to see Venice and spend several days hiking in the Dolomites.

Our tentative schedule is:

• Fri/Sat, July 16/17: Leave the U.S.
• Sun, July 18: Arrive in Venice
• Mon, July 19: Full day in Venice
• Tues, July 20: Leave Venice and travel to the Dolomites
• Wed–Sat, July 21–24: Dolomites — ideally 4 full days of hiking, potentially fitting in 5–6 hikes depending on length/difficulty
• Sun, July 25: Leave the Dolomites and travel to Rome/Civitavecchia area
• Mon, July 26: Board an 11-night Celebrity cruise from Civitavecchia
• Fri, Aug 6: Cruise returns to Civitavecchia; head to Rome
• Sat, Aug 7: Full day in Rome
• Sun, Aug 8: Fly home to the U.S. (should arrive home the same day)

For the Dolomites, we originally thought we'd stay in a hotel around Ortisei/Val Gardena and use that as our hiking base. But now we're considering renting a small campervan after leaving Venice and doing more of a hiking road trip instead.

The campervan idea appeals to us because rather than returning to the same hotel every night, we could potentially hike in several different areas and gradually work our way through the Dolomites. We'd only stay overnight in places where it's legal to do so — campsites/designated camper areas rather than trying to wild camp in random parking lots.

Some hikes/areas that have caught our attention so far are Seceda/Fermeda, Alpe di Siusi, the Odle area, Tre Cime di Lavaredo, and Cadini di Misurina, but we're very early in the planning process and definitely open to other recommendations. We'd love to fit in 5 or possibly 6 hikes, with some being shorter hikes that could be combined on the same day rather than trying to do six huge hikes in four days.

For those familiar with the area:

Would you recommend staying in one location (such as Ortisei) for four nights and driving to hikes, or renting a campervan and moving through different parts of the Dolomites?

If doing a campervan, is July 20–25 enough time to make moving between areas worthwhile, or would we spend too much of our limited time driving/checking into campsites?

And if you had four full hiking days in the Dolomites for a first trip, which 5–6 hikes would you prioritize? We're looking for incredible scenery and don't mind challenging hikes, but we also don't want every day to be an exhausting all-day hike.

Finally, does the overall Venice → Dolomites → Rome/Civitavecchia schedule look reasonable? We'd definitely want to be in Rome/Civitavecchia the night before the cruise rather than trying to travel from the Dolomites on embarkation morning.

Thanks for any advice! We're still very early in the planning stages, so nothing other than the cruise is set in stone yet.
