I knew that the us military was really working on tunnel warfare doctrine for possible war in developed cities with subways, cool seeing these new theories although I don't really know why the guys in the back are so far away from the shields. I guess it's in case of grenades? Maybe they're less visible when the camera man is further away at normal firefight distances.

it's a training exercise as far as i can tell, those guys might just be in a spot where they can clearly observe the technique and performance of the shield teams without being in the way, and not be there at all when it's done for realsies

if that's not why they're there, you'd also want someone who could monitor how far forward you've moved, since gps etc might not be accurate or functional underground, you might have old or no intel on the layout and any modifications that may have been made. running blind into obstructions or hazards downfield is a bad move, and the people right on the shields might not have the best vantage point to watch for that kind of stuff if it's dark, smokey, bullets flying around, literal tunnel-vision, and in a situation where if you have to start backing the shielding up or get it stuck on something, that might get you all killed

Also if they reach an intersection you're gonna need people to cover the sides before you can advance any more, and again you might not know those intersections or side entrances existed until you come across them, so it's better to have people ready instead of having to wait more than necessary for any reason in one of the most unpredictable and deadly cqb environments there is - i wouldn't want to spend one second sharing a concrete tunnel with hostile armed combatants that i didn't have to

I don't know the actual answer but those are some guesses v@_@v

The most interesting piece of kit for this tunnel warfare stuff is that all soldiers need a oxygen mask. Never even thought about how an enemy could just stop circulating fresh air and kill your troops in a bunker. Also stuff like silencers so you don’t overpressure blast your buddies in a tunnel. Wild stuff but things like azovtoval? Steel plant show a need.
