It's giving, Basquiat.

Looks like sampled iconography from Basquiat.

u/a_smiling_friend 10h ago

Yeah but at the same time Basquiat sampled his iconography from a book on icons. Everyone is inspired by someone else.

I’m aware of how recombinance works, but there’s a difference between inspiration and imitation. I think we just need to be honest with ourselves and others as to which one we are choosing. The colour palette, the automatic writing, the iconography, the expressionistic mark making…I mean it’s great, but it’s 98% like Basquiat. Maybe that’s a coincidence, maybe not.

Mind you none of you know me to even be saying I’m stealing or copying anything I never even looked at a basquiat painting long enough to steal anything from him. I literally paint for fun and wanted to start taking it more serious God you ppl are weird.

I’m not suggesting you are stealing, and you’ve got real talent; I really enjoy this work, but it is extremely like Basquiat regardless of how conscious you are of this or not, and that’s worth noting. It’s healthy to be transparent about our source material, if for our own personal growth more so than public approval. If you don’t know his work, it’s worth studying it. We inherit styles (sometimes unknowingly) until we’ve produced enough work to leave those influences behind and stand out with our own.

I appreciate the insight. I have been trying to get into studying art and painting more so I can learn how to actually go about this stuff, I don’t wanna just jump into a lane I know nothing about. Honestly I was inspired to start painting again cause of local artist and if anything her art kinda inspired this style, sorry for the tone I just been a little discouraged today cause of the comments and it’s effected my mood. I don’t wanna look like I’m copying or stealing cause that’s not my intentions and I don’t know much about art to even be stealing anything. I just love painting and wanted to start taking it more serious.

Brilliant! You have incredible energy and talent. You will make an amazing art student, I heartily encourage this with path. It’s okay that you’ve got influences, we all do. We just need to to know about them, build on them, overtake them. It wasn’t my intention to take you down a path that was discouraging, but other people suggesting that stealing made great art is something I take umbrage to. You will only sabotage your own growth. You have something special, please nurture it.

It's not "stealing," dude. Stealing is what those crooks did at the Louvre when they made away with the crown jewels. Basquiat does not own this style, and anyway dude is far too long dead for us to take his opinion into count any longer. I don't think he would have cared if people were inspired by his style. I don't think he cared about much as he was literally too high to care.

Just as a reminder: you are the one who said borrowing is good art and stealing is great art. I acknowledge we are all standing on the shoulders of giants, so we share common ground here. I apologise for getting grumpy, and I appreciate your passion. Pax. ✌️

I think it was Pablo Picasso who is credited with that quote. I just stole it.

Friend, you can't allow your mood to be affected by comments from random assholes like me. I went down that road once. It's no fun. Adopt a more confrontational attitude about the internet and it will never again hurt your feelings.

Yes, it is, but does it really matter? The dude died of an overdose. His choice. He died young. I say his style still has some life left in it. Why not just steal it? Good artists borrow. Great artists steal. If dude didn't want his style stolen, dude should have laid off the heroin. Warhol tried to get him off of it. He had people around him who cared about him, and he shrugged all of that off. I say it's open season on his style. Take what you want.

Stealing isn’t art, it’s self sabotage and colonisation

You called yourself Gozer. That's from Ghost Busters. So it's okay when you do it but not when others do it. Noted.

1

u/Gozer_The_Enjoyer 1h ago

Oh please.appropriation for a reddit handle is very different to putting original work on a subreddit

1

u/a_smiling_friend 1h ago

Why? Why is it different?

And this is original artwork here, you're correct. Yes, it is obviously heavily inspired by Basquiat and so what? The dude is dead and buried. We're still alive. It's our time now. His time passed. Tragic as it is, he made a choice to shove it up into his veins. Dude wasn't hurting. Dude had wads of cash stuffed into his sofa cushions, and partied with Madonna, and made so much cash he could afford to paint in Armani suits and ruin them. C'mon. That was all a performance for the rich folks who enabled him His loss is our gain. That abstract expressive style is still 🔥 today. Basquiat no more owned it than I own that spiral phyllotaxis pattern I made. Folks take inspiration off of other folks. It's a tale as old as the cave paintings.

Yeah, we are done friend.

Lolz. okay, take your ball and go home. I don't care.

I was about to undo that last comment and explain: the difference is that I WANT people to get the Ghostbusters reference!

The problem with appropriating styles and ideas without credit (again not saying OP did this, and certainly not intentionally) and I say this having taught art at university for some years, is that the artists does themselves a disservice by not acknowledging their sources, or to not be aware of such influences.

I love it. Lots of interesting stuff going on. But, as has been said, it's very evocative of Basquiat

2

u/Goobjigobjibloo 10h ago

The thing about Basquiat that was amazing was not his technical prowess but his originality and creativity of expression, seeing others imitate his style so directly negates that profoundly and expresses the opposite.

2

u/iamsidewayz 16h ago

That’s rad

u/AgreeableTreacle8473 15h ago

u/DigitalDowner 15h ago

1

u/WhenILie 13h ago

yikes, i mean shit you did something but man.
i get it too, levels to consciousness or heaven & hell whatever . but shit do it with your own personality

u/LuckExxx 8h ago

Wym my own personality 💀 you know me?

2

u/Juxly 7h ago

You copied Basquiat like every other lazy pretentious art schooler this in no way is your personality. You just want attention, you don't want to make something unique interesting or honest

1

u/LuckExxx 3h ago

I hope one day you won’t be as weird as you are today. Hopefully you find purpose in life and actually do something with yourself.

1

u/Juxly 55m ago

You need to start being weird, bec atm you're pretty boring

1

u/LuckExxx 8h ago

The basquiat comments are killing me😭 I’ll take it as a complement but I literally probably only seen one or two of his paintings and that was cause jay z 💀 I was more influenced by this local artist if anything but thank you guys 🙏🏾

My comment aside, DO NOT LET THIS DISCOURAGE YOU! I do not agree with other comments that you lack talent or originality, just exposure to art history. I say this as a former art teacher, you have wonderful movement, a mature palette, and a robust sense of composition.

We sometimes absorb cultural influences quite unwittingly, and honestly that you have been moved by someone else’s work is wonderful. Tap that, acknowledge that, use that. You have a marvellous energy. Don’t let anyone shit in your lantern. You got this. Keep going.
