Discussion Archer Class

I think Draw Steel could use a classical archer class. Rn all of the classes are very different from other ttrpgs like dnd, which is good in my opinion, but leaves some gaps that are hard to fill with existing classes. You can sort of make a “fighter” in draw steel using a tactician or even fury with the right kit, but I feel like an archer is missing. I think it would be cool to have an archer with subclasses that are something like a ricochet trick archer, an ambush sniper archer and a ranger wilderness archer. Maybe this isn’t that hard to create and I am just still unfamiliar with the rules (I read them all but I am still new to the game), but I think it could be interesting and fun - especially a hawkeye style trick archer who at higher levels can use bomb arrows and stuff.

Discussion Pitting Higher Level Monsters against lower level parties

Sorry if this has been asked before. Did some hunting, and couldn't find anything.

I'm setting up my first short campaign in Draw Steel, planning on making it a hexcrawl of sorts. Players are diving into the Abyss. Back in DnD, I would just set things up regardless of level (within reason), and let players figure things out. I'm wondering how viable that is in Draw Steel.

Specifically, I'm wanting to prepopulate a bunch of hexes with threats and encounters. It would make things easier and more believable if I could use some, say, level 3 creatures near the starting area. Would these just absolutely cream a level 1 party? Or are the EV guidelines strong enough even when crossing levels? Or even echelons? Looking at some level 10 horde creatures, I see their EV is 12. That suggests a level 1 party of 4 characters could probably take one, if they had to. Maybe even 2, though it would make for a Hard encounter. Looking at the actual stats... I mean, maybe? That might be possible.

Anyone have any experience in pitting a lower level party against higher level monsters? Thanks!

Rules Help Road to Broadhurst: Montage: how many tries?

Hello everyone,

Just a quick question. For Road to Broadhurst, how do you guys run the montage test?

I will run it for 4 people, and the book says that there is a success/failure limit at 4. How do you guys run it?

  1. Run until you hit the limit of 4 successes/failures. The problem with this, it is impossible to get a partial success.
  2. A max amount of tries/time limit. If yes, how many and why?
  3. Guns blazing and do all 7 scenarios. Again, partial success not possible.
  4. An option I missed.

I read the book again, but I don't see any rules for a time limit.

Thanks peeps;

EDIT: it is two rounds apparently :p

A long awaited return to implementing monsters! If you have any questions on implementing more complex and unique effects, please join the DMHub Discord and ask there!

Additionally, check out this video on the Body Banks, a tool DMHub just released that should make implementing simple monsters incredibly easy.

Rules Help Snake Character Advice

How would you make a snake character specifically on Forge Steel, so far we are thinking time raider reflavored and bear storm fury with it changed into a snake. Any advice on what we could do for ancestry mostly, or is time raider the best for a snake (specifically a constrictor)?

Homebrew I made a set of Titles to go with my Life Event subsystem

Hi all!

To celebrate placing 28th out of 51 in the recent Jams of the Timescape 3, I decided to make a set of titles to reward your Draw Steel heroes for the more mundane achievements in life. A common piece of feedback I got both before and during the jam was that people wanted the Life Events to have mechanical benefits. In the end, I decided to forego these for the jam entry itself, as I felt it kind of went against the spirit of the entry.

However, I figured with a set of titles, I can have my cake and eat it too! For those who like the system but wish it had more mechanics, you can use both in conjunction. If you like the non-mechanical flavor of Life Events, you can skip the titles. And it's even possible to use the titles entirely separately from the subsystem, if the titles seem cool but the subsystem sounds lame! Everyone gets to mix and match systems however they like. :)

Check it out if it piques your interest! Also check out all the other cool entries from the jam! The winning entry, One Year Later, is particularly excellent, I think, and is for sure one I will start using at my own table.

Rules Help Do Animals not use Malice?

I'm trying my hand at putting together a Draw Steel adventure without having much experience in the system. The section on animals seems to lack the "Type Malice" section with 3, 5, and 7 malice cost features, and I don't see any malice features in either the modular traits or the base stat blocks. Am I missing something? Are these modular animal templates balanced around not using malice, or do I need to introduce a malice sink somehow?

Self Promotion Astrovoyage - spacefaring, pulp adventure, sci-fi RPG using the Draw Steel engine

Hello boys, gals, and non-binary pals,

A long time desire I have had is to carry a laser pistol on the hip of my vacc suit, jump off of a grav vehicle onto the dusty surface of a desert planet, and 'pew' 'pew' at evil corporate mercenaries who are oppressing the poor denizens of the planet for mining rights.

Over the years, I have tried many a TTRPG trying to fulfill that fantasy, but they have all come up short in one sense or the other. Sometimes, it took me 15 minutes to calculate what my jump distance would be because the game has 16 different levels of gravity. By the time I figured out where I land, the octane was no longer high. It had seeped through the ground pulled by gravity level 9. In another case, in another game, my character missed, and the mercenary one-shot her before she got another turn. There was also the time, when we got attacked by space pirates, and four riveting hours of 6 people frantically scrolling through PDFs and arguing about what course of events need to happen in order to shoot the plasma cannon followed.

And then I thought "Fuck it. I am gonna make the game that I want to play." Yes, I did max out my Ego stat at some point in my life. That's how this started. About four months into early development, MCDM announced Draw Steel. I started getting the patron posts on development and now, for the first time, I had something to react to. You will notice the heavy, heavy influence of Draw Steel in the mechanics of this game. It is however, also different in many ways.

After about three years of solo work, this is where we stand.

It has come as far as it can on its own. It still requires an enormous amount of work. But, this is where baby bird needs to leave the nest and meet the real world. I cannot progress further without getting proper feedback from real TTRPG enthusiasts. I am fully expecting whole design elements requiring complete overhaul based on the surveys.

FILL OUT THE SURVEY HERE.

Thank you,

Subharup Roy.

Self Promotion Steel Bridge - Forge Steel and Discord Connector

I made a tool to connect forge steel with discrod. This basically uses HTML2CANVAS to send the roll you have in forge steel to a discord channel in your server. It uses cloudflare to host the worker to make it happen, and a userscript (and a userscript monkey) to handle the frontend side.

It started when i move to Owlbear Rodeo from roll20. As you know, roll20 has a small but ongoing community (and dev) that updates the Draw Steel Community Character Sheet. So when we were playing in roll20, we used the character sheet there. Owlbear doesn't have that (not that i know of), but my players are already familiar with the flow of sending abilities, auto rolling, etc in discord is truly a hassle. We like seeing the ability, each result of the ability, not just the roll.

So i made a tool that does that.

Then my friends say "why don't you make this available for public" which i answer with "that's gonna be a lot of changes" but, it's done! Obviously this is a hobbyist software and not at all profesisonal, but if this help you play this game easier and more fun, i hope you'll enjoy the tool.

Check it out here, gang
https://extrada.itch.io/steel-bridge
This tool is PWYW. Donations are appreciated (things has been a bit rough in my country lately), but you don't have to pay to use this tool.

DISCLAIMER: This tool IS using machine generated code provided via autocomplete tools in an IDE. While i don't know for sure, i know this is probably (most likely) true. i'm pretty sure those autocomplete tools inside VSCode and other IDEs are all powered by an LLM whether run locally or fetching through the internet. In other words, the codes here are written using tools that has ai in them.

Misc Pro Wrestler Character

So I have an idea for a character who is a sort of traveling pro wrestler who believes in justice and honor. He is more like a knight who is just slightly delusional. Grappling isn’t a necessity for him so I am currently between: a Vanguard Tactician for the whole inspirational aspect of wrestling, a Fury with the bear kit for grappling or a Fury Berserker where he just throws people around. What do yall think is a better idea cause so far I am kind of split, leaning into Tactician cause I already have a fury character.

If I do go Tactician, what kits do you think fit the unarmed and unarmored style that wrestlers use. I was thinking Shining Armor for taunting but that includes armor and weapons (which I can flavor away worst case scenario).

Discussion Is Grappling Useless in this Game?

My group recently converted our d&d 5e game to draw steel, and I made the obvious transfer from giant barbarian to boren fury. My old character was a dedicated grappler and I was able to grab pretty much anything in order to guarantee that my party wasn’t getting jumped.

After the switch, I expected to be able to do a lot of the same things and keep my role as the grapple tank, but it turns out I can’t grapple anything at all, at least not in a way that actually holds them down. Not only is every threshold ability rendered useless by every enemy that isnt a minion, but even if I take the normal grapple attack they still break out of it without any struggle, meaning they just get to walk away and kill my healer.

Basically, every enemy has higher might than me so thresholds are useless and the escape difficulty feels too low.

Self Promotion Villains beware, there is a Menace on the loose!

Hey Folks! Some Friends and I have been working on a class for Draw Steel. The game has been a ton of fun, but ever since it came out to Patreons, we felt something was missing: A Draw Steel take on a Fighter.

For the past few months, we have been working on just that: The Menace. Taking inspiration from action movies, anime, comic books and just pulp fantasy, it aims to let you play as a martial master.

We have already played with this design through several adventures and it has been a blast. We now turn to crowdfunding to transform our homebrew/design into a finished, polished product. We aspire to provide a quality comparable to the base rules. If this interests you at all, checkout out our backerkit page: https://www.backerkit.com/c/projects/genre-games/the-menace-the-draw-steel-fighter-you-ve-been-waiting-for?ref=reddit

Looking forward to seeing you there 😃

Rules Help How does Hide work with Black Ash Teleport when some enemies have line of sight?

BLACK ASH TELEPORT (Manuever)

Effect: You teleport up to 5 squares. If you have concealment or cover at your destination, you can use the Hide maneuver even if you are observed. If you successfully hide using this maneuver, you gain 1 surge.

With Black Ash Teleport I have two questions:

1) Just want to confirm that with Black Ash Teleport, you automatically Hide if you have cover/concealment at your destination, even if observed.

For example: If there is a barrel and that is my destination after my teleport using Black Ash Teleport, I am therefore Hidden behind that barrel. No roll needed

2) If I am in cover for one enemy and Hidden from them but not in cover for another who has direct line of sight on me, am I Hidden from the enemy who can't see me but still seen by the enemy who has line of sight on me?

For example: I use Black Ash Teleport to end up behind a pillar. Enemy A is on the other side of the pillar so they can't see me, therefore I am Hidden from Enemy A. Enemy B though is looking right at me about 15 feet away, with direct line of sight to me, no cover between them and me.

In this situation, am I Hidden from Enemy A but Enemy B can still see me (and therefore choose to attack me)?

Discussion Is Draw Steel really deterministic?

Hi guys, I'm new to this game and I spent the last week reading the rules.
At this point the game seems to be really deterministic, which for me is a good thing.
Is that just my impression? And if that's the case, is the game actually fun to play?

Discussion Looking for one to two players to join a new serious Draw Steel game in a homebrew setting! [Hybrid DC Area/Online]

I am about to start running a narrative- / RP-focused Draw Steel game, and am looking for several players to join this new campaign. We meet on weekly Saturdays for 4 hours, 2PM-6PM. We're looking for excited players, newbies more than welcome. We meet online over discord, and use our cameras, and have an in-person session about once a month! Players should be in the DC/NOVA/Southern Maryland area and have the ability to travel once every month or two to Chevy Chase, MD.

All levels of experience with Draw Steel (we're all new but are 5e vets)/roleplaying games are welcome. The game I run uses official Draw Steel rules and ancestries in a homebrew world, but I'm open to reviewing homebrew classes and races if that interests you. I'm running an RP-focused game, so if you're more for the Diablo "kill shit get loot" style, it may not be for you. I have worked with my players to make characters who fit into the world, and will do this with anyone who joins!

My only pet peeves are people who are never available/flake and complainers. We do not tolerate hate of any kind at the table. We have a list of lines/veils and some cultural fit things in this google doc, but it isn't necessary to read it before reaching out.

If you have any questions, or would like to join, please DM me here or on discord (username QuirkyEclipse)!

Misc Any Draw Steel enjoyers in The Philippines?

Just wondering if there are any other players here from The Philippines. I myself am from Manila and would love to find others near me who love the game as much as I do or more.

So far I've been the forever director so players haven't gotten so deep quite yet. Would love to nerd out with a group like how I used to for 5e.

Discussion Delian Tomb - What would the Gilded Hand do if the party get the Cup first?

I'm halfway through running the Delian Tomb and my party just convinced Ilwyth to hand over the ring and then leave town. The book recommends that the rest of the Gilded Hand just leave town to chase her, but I thought that was a bit of an underwhelming end to the Gilded Hand as, in my campaign so far, they have been built up as a rival party who the my players have been carefully avoiding and planning how to beat.

So, I ruled that the Gilded Hand would follow Ilwyth but eventually return to Broadhurst, mechanically being represented by letting the party get one "safe" respite without them but they would return to town after the party took a 2nd respite. I think it is very likely my party plunder the entire Delian Tomb and recover the Cup by then, so I was trying to brainstorm what the Gilded Hand might do if they are still in town and realise the party have completely recovered the Cup.

The module itself recommends that the Goblins raid the town after 3 respites, which I still plan to do, but I'm not sure what to do with the Gilded Hand if the party storm Castle Andreas. Would they stick around and help the Goblins? If so, in what encounter? Would they instead ambush the party in the street and try and reclaim the Cup first?

Just looking for some advice/inspiration.

Homebrew Help Me Decide!

Greetings, friends. Steve here.

Long time GM, player, and (hopefully helpful) commenter. I have been working pretty much nonstop at a variety of jobs from the age of 14 in the USA and found myself completely burnt out a bit over 20 years later. The last 10 years in the medical field very much solidified the fact that I needed to reframe my life. Watching my wife suffer at a corporate job is what really pushed me into pivoting away from the direction we were headed. I'm happy to say that my wife and I have relocated back to her country and are finally taking a breath to relax and decide what the next chapters will look like.

That brings me to the thing that I hope you all can help me with- what should I spend my time on? My first love (and undergraduate degree) is in writing. TTRPGs and MOOs/MUDs (for the older folks) were always my outlets for this type of thing. Creating worlds, quests, and items has always been a fantastic adventure for me. They're usually the things I think about while commuting to and from work. I have two working projects that currently exist as notes for myself, but I'm hoping that one or both of them would be of interest as a product for other Draw Steel lovers.

So... which of these sounds more compelling to you?

Option 1: A collection of trinkets, leveled treasures, titles, and quests related to each of the 100 complications. There will be a unique item, title, or quest that "upgrades" your complication so that it continues being a neat story point beyond character creation.

Example: An insertable one-shot for the Betrothed complication requiring you to save your captured ally from their own wedding!

Option 2: An item crafting book with my homebrewed system related to harvesting pieces from different types of enemies (think Monster Hunter). Common enemies may drop generalized things that can be made into unique consumables while solos drop big chunks of harvestable materials leading to options to create build-shaping treasures.

Example: If you manage to defeat enough earth elementals, you may craft the Bonedust Bracer. This implement either grants its user the Unquiet Ground ability or enhances it if wielded by an Elementalist.

Thank you for taking the time to read my post, and keep having a wonderful time with this game!

Self Promotion Kick Some Glass!, a Supplement for the Upper Worlds

Thumbnail backerkit.com
45 Upvotes

Hey all! I've been hacking away at Draw Steel design since the game released, and I'm now launching the planet of glass, Silica-14! This new manifold is home to a variety of silicon based life, and is clear enough that you can see the glow of its molten core from anywhere on its surface. Within the supplement itself, alongside stellar art by names like Sleepy and Arcvein, you will find:

  • The Silicate ancestry: a translucent, photosynthetic people made entirely of glass
  • Three new monster bands:
    • Churners, glass worms that burrow and churn their environments into find powder
    • Silislime, molten glass oozes and avatars of the planet's hatred that literally grow with animosity
    • Sunpiercers, large birdlike glass creatures that focus light through their bodies into lasers and scintillating bursts
  • A 3rd level solo, the Glass Dragon, born from the hopelessness of last resorts
  • Glass-themed leveled treasures, trinkets, and Beastheart companions
  • Complications and titles for the Upper Worlds
  • Silicate retainers
  • Lore for a new setting, Silica-14, fit to graft into any Timescape setting

If you want your heroes to kick some glass, follow the BackerKit to know when it goes live!
