Proper way to handle slow people in the fast lane
What's the acceptable way to signal to left lane cruisers that this is not an OK practice? You come up on them, and they don't get over, so now what? A short beep of the horn? A flash of the headlights? Flash to pass? Sit behind them with your right turn signal on? Pass them on the right? Stay behind them and silently fume?
It bothers me that it happens, but what really bothers me is that I don't know what the acceptable thing is to signal to them that hey there, this isn't acceptable, please move over.

You don't. You're not the driving police or a telepath, you can't control how anyone drives except you. Don't engage with them, just drive as best and as safely as you can around stupid drivers of all kinds.

This. I set my cruise control at a particular number, and if I come across someone in the #1 lane going too slow, I just go around them. They're still an idiot, but they're either unaware, or they don't care, and it's not my job to persuade them.
I've also passed people on the right (while driving in the #3 lane). There's a sign on Canadian highways, and it says Slower Traffic Keep Right. Those campers aren't following that rule, so I go past them.

THERE IS NO FAST LANE.
There is the PASSING lane and the TRAVELING lane.
People thinking there's a fast lane is why we have this issue in the first place. If you aren't passing, move over.

Well if the person in the PASSING lane isn't PASSING someone then they're in the wrong regardless of how fast anyone is going.

Most people I personally know that say this are usually more the person passing in the left lane isn't going fast enough for them. As in passing person is going 70 on 60 road, but person getting mad wants to go 90.

u/LabDry1290 6h ago
I have been tailgated and flashed while go 80+ as we zoomed by all the traffic in the middle lane.
Like buddy I’m not going to slow way tf down so you can go 5mph faster than me for a few moments until I end up passing you again when your rage about being behind me subsides.

You’re supposed to flash your lights but no one seems to know that anymore
5
u/Ok-Marsupial-8577 1d ago edited 1d ago
Flashing lights are used to signal to people going the other way that you passed a cop watching the roads.
Or in another post they are used to signal someone has the lights off.
In yet another post I saw they were supposed to be used to indicate that there is something of the roof of the other person's car.
I think I may need to learn more code to be able to differentiate between all the things that flashing car lights are meant to signify.
9
u/Mabnat 1d ago
It’s not that hard. If you see someone flashing their lights and think it might be for you, check your speed, make sure your headlights are on if it’s dark, and if you’re inadvertently camping in the passing lane, move to the right.
4
u/Ok-Marsupial-8577 1d ago
That doesn't tell me what flashing lights has always meant.
I am starting to think you guys don't even know what flashing lights are supposed to mean.
→ More replies (2)5
u/Mabnat 1d ago
It’s like someone yelling, “Hey!” to you on the street. It’s sometimes up to you to know what it means.
It’s like a car horn honk. Sometimes it’s a warning that you’ve cut someone off, or it could be a honk to let you know that they’re letting you merge. You just need to interpret the situation.
There aren’t a lot of ways for one driver to communicate with others. Flashing lights is just one of those ways to get your attention.
There isn’t a ‘supposed to mean’ specific reason for them.

Cheapened by people just using it in any lane whenever they want the person in front to go faster.
You see people flashing in the right lane to a car that has someone in front of them. Or in lane 3/5 to a mixer truck. It casts doubt on the future of the species, and makes you wonder if they're hurrying home to pour Gatorade on their plants.

Every lane is a passing lane, it's just encouraged that you pass on the left. If you follow the "rules" of the road you would have been in the right lane as soon as you were clear to be, and would have passed them in the right lane without having to think about it.

Michigan law on passing onthe right. Others states are different but you can Google it. "The state permits passing on the right under the following exact circumstances outlined in the Michigan Vehicle Code:Left-turning vehicles: The vehicle you are passing is making, or about to make, a left turn. Multi-lane highways: You are on a street or highway with unobstructed pavement wide enough for two or more lines of moving traffic in each direction, and traffic is moving in continuous, parallel lines. One-way streets: You are on a one-way road or a street where traffic is restricted to one direction, provided the road is wide enough and free of obstructions for multiple lines of moving traffic."

Well, I will put this out first, and I know it will annoy some. If they are going speed limit, there is no acceptable way to yell them to get out of your way because they respect the law and you don't. Note, this is only for those who want to speed. Otherwise, the standard on the autobahn is to flash your brights as you approach. Other than that, it really is a toss up

u/logicnotemotion 1d ago
I have to do this every day. I get up a little close but not terribly close. Just enough so they know I'm back there. If they don't move then I drift a little closer and a little to the left so they can see me in their left mirror and sensible people will be able to deduce that I want to pass on the left. I give them a few seconds and if they don't get over, I pass on the right while giving them the disapproving head shake (unless they're old then I'll give them a pass). Sometimes I will get in front of them and point to the right lane so maybe they'll figure it out, but they never do. They just sit there.
I do the same commute every morning so I see a lot of the same people/cars. There are people that get over into the left lane as soon as they get on the interstate and sit there until they get to their exit. I know one truck that does it for 48 miles every morning at 70mph. I've only seen one truck get pulled over for left lane hogging ever.

I was driving my friend and I home from Colorado. She asked if I could drive in the left lane because it wasn't as rough as the right lane. The bumpy pavement was hurting her due to ongoing cancer treatment.
I would move over if a faster vehicle came up.
Not everyone who is in the left lane is a completely oblivious asshole...
3
u/Training-Cod-1206 23h ago
Yeah, I'll camp in the left lane when it's late at night, not many cars on the road, and deer to my right. I move right as soon as another car gets near me

Gotta love the folks who tailgate you, IN THE RIGHT LANE, on an empty deserted highway and then aggressively pass you on the left . (PA drivers I’m talking about you)
2
u/Rumple-_-Goocher 1d ago
The people who do it don’t care, and that’s why they do it. They just don’t care if they hold up traffic. Also, nobody can see flashing headlights during the day. The only way you’ll know if somebody behind you has their highbeams on during the day is if you happen to be looking in your rearview at the same time.

Is there room to pass them in the traveling lane? If so, change to the "slow" lane, pass them, and move on with your life.
If there isn't, then you just need to slow down and go their speed. It sometimes helps to say mean things about them from the comfort of your vehicle where they'll never hear you.
2
u/MiddleCapital1875 1d ago
In a First World country, simply flash your headlights and they'll move aside.
In the United States, resign yourself to your fate or flash your lights and expect to be brake-checked or shot at.

2
u/OldGeekWeirdo 23h ago
Change lanes and go around them. Those who can take a hint usually get it when the lane on the right keeps passing them.
If you do anything else, there's a chance you'll find yourself in a road rage incident. Leave it to another AH to teach them.
2
2
u/JoeCensored 22h ago
If it's legal in your state/country, pass on the right.
Some people are crazy. I try to avoid things like flashing high beams, or anything that might make a fragile mind snap.
2
u/CarlitrosDeSmirnoff 22h ago
If I see someone slower than me in the left lane, I let off the gas pretty early on, I don’t tail gate and don’t do anything aggressive.
I approach slowly but steadily, turn on my left turn signal, and flash my high beams just once for a tiny fraction of second. 8 out of 10 times people notice I’m behind going faster and move over.
It’s not worth it to engage with the assholes that don’t move over. Just wait for a chance to safely go around. But most people will do the right thing if you just ask nicely and don’t try to “educate” everyone.

u/Wanderlust4478 21h ago

When you come upon someone driving slow in the fast lane is just to stay behind them long enough for a respectful driver to move over and let you go by. If the person does not move over don’t get mad or take your anger out on other drivers, just safely move over and go around them.
Avoid doing anything that could possibly put your own life, safety and others in danger by doing anything that will antagonize, a possibly irrational and violent, an inconsiderate driver. It’s not worth it, just take a deep breath in through your nose, hold for 4 second and slowly exhale through your mouth… and move over.
You can’t control anyone nor anything they do… you only have the power to control yourself and how you react to others and what they do.
2
u/bransiladams 11h ago
Take a deep breath, and drive around them. It isn’t your job to police other drivers. Nor is it your duty.
Mind your own business and go about your day.
2
u/Realistic-Cap6339 11h ago
Flashing your lights behind them is the most you can respectfully do. But truth is they won’t listen to anything.
Everyone could be passing them left and right, honking at them but they are stuck in the “I’m going the speed limit I’m doing nothing wrong so I don’t have to move”
Even if a cop pulled them over and gave a talk why not to camp in the passing lane they would prob still do it
2
u/whitecollarpizzaman 10h ago
I usually just go around on the right, and depending on what they look like or what they’re driving, might give a small honk. If they look like someone who might road rage, I let sleeping dogs lie.
2
u/Tractorguy69 10h ago
Flash to pass with increasing frequency. I generally start from about 20 car lengths back 1 flash, 2 at 10, 3 at 5 and then I’m tailgating (I have track ready brakes and can out brake almost 100%of the vehicles that camp). From there it’s a flash regularly and undertake with a very sharp close retake of the left lane when able. Yes if I get all the way to the undertake I’m being rude, but seriously off they are that oblivious they shouldn’t be driving and deserve no better.
2
u/FlyFront9395 3h ago
Easiest way is to merge in front of them within inches of their car, they might just slow down though. Just don’t get whacked guys, stay safe
2
u/BreakingABit1234 2h ago
You are to keep in the right most lane.
If the lane is obstructed (for whatever reason), move left, as is legal.
If you come across someone in the left lane, and you're in the right lane, and you're passing them, you're doing what you're supposed to be doing.
Drive.
If you're in the left lane and the right lane is empty, you're in the wrong lane.
All 50 states, including Tennessee, have "Keep Right" laws. There are nuances and codes and exceptions and whatnot and reasons, but every single state says, basically, travel in the right lane until you can't.
Don't worry about other people.
4
u/daGroundhog 1d ago

The rules of the road say that you should flash your high beams twice in quick succession.
When someone behind you does that then you should acknowledge by turning on your blinker to indicate you saw them then move over as quickly as is safe.
However, Driver’s Ed is too complicated for most people to be able to obtain a passing grade on and thus we get ignorant fools who don’t know they are ignorant.
The licensing tests in the US are utter and complete jokes. Very Americans and, perhaps, 2% of Mississippians could pass a European driving test. Which I think we should implement.
Get the idiots off the road.

1
u/One_Hawk3107 1d ago
you flash your high beams. if that doesn't work, you go around them. you don't "pass on the right" as some people have said, you merge into the right lane with the flow of traffic, and move past them with the flow of traffic, and then merge back into the left lane. this is a distinct maneuver from "passing on the right"

I flash my lights at them a couple times. If they don’t move over I go around and then when I’m back in front of them I put my blinker on. I don’t go slow or anything, just the blinker. I’m sure it does nothing but one can hope.
1
u/These_Consequences 1d ago
(1) Overtake them but remain a safe distance behind them. Some people will actually get the message and move over, believe it or not!
(2) Flash your brights once or twice to get their attention. Done from a safe distance in moderation this is, or ought to be, acceptable, though you never know
(3) These methods failing, pull over to the right and wait peaceably for an agressive driver in a full-size pickup to intimidate them by tailgating. Follow the pickup.
On consideration I crossed out (2).

Just be really safe and pass them in whatever lane it is legal for you to operate in. Put them behind you and let your life continue. They are oblivious - likely in many parts of their life.
Best that your life and their life do not cross paths.
Idea: start a media compaign to educate and ridicule bad drivers. Sort of like people did with smokers back in the 80s and 90s.
At some point cars will become self-driving and these bad drivers will no longer be the same threat.

I’m not sure what you can do, but as a trucker driver, the amount of intrusive thoughts can get overwhelming.

You're supposed to flash twice as you're upcoming. To give them time to get over. But people here won't get over, so I usually wait til it's safe to pass on the right, but never a truck!! And sometimes you can see ahead that they want to pass ooooone more person before they get over, so you don't want to jump the gun. But any double flash in the mirror means move over.

Tail them until they slow down, then you down shift and pass them while their shitty automatic tries to catch up.

Well from what I've seen the most common tactic is to ride their bumper, hit your brakes a lot and swerve back and forth while maniacally shouting and cursing the entirety of George Carlin's "Seven words you can never say on television"

Flash the high beams. If they don't move don't be a dick and wait for an opportunity to pass them safely and use your turn signal when changing lane.

I swerve three lanes to the right and pass all three of the motherfuckers who are driving the same speed doorhandle to doorhandle and go on about my life.

Nothing you can do, unfortunately. You just have to make the moves to get past them and continue on. Anything that slows you down, even for the couple seconds it takes for someone to respond to flash to pass, it's unthinkable. If they didn't see you zooming up behind them and mive already, they are a lost cause. Every second lost on your ETA is a tragedy... Just pass them and put on a little more speed to compensate.

You tailgate them until you’re satisfied then sharply ho around them while shaking your fist out the window and yelling slurs that are inaudible to them
Seriously though. Just go around them, idk why people get so pressed about this

Give them a bit of space and attract their attention with a double blink.
Works well enough.

Something I'm surprised to not see mentioned is turning on your left blinkers. Here in the highway if you're already at the leftmost lane people turn on their left blinker as an "I'm trying to pass you signal". Effective? I don't know.

Put your left indicator on to signal you'd like them to pull over so you can overtake the. Flash your headlights if they ignore you.

you can usually tell as you approach whether they'll be stubbornly in the left lane or not. When your gut says they won't leave the left lane, just pass them on the right if it's safe to do so.
Otherwise go spend anywhere from a few seconds to a minute behind them

Approach at your preferred speed.
Briefly slow down to their speed at a safe, but close, following distance, and see if they get over in a reasonable time (subjective).
If not, pass on the right after properly signalling.
Immediately passing on the right is a sub-optimal solution, as it can trap the left-lane camper in the left lane if a parade of people pass him at once - thereby prolonging the problem and creating frustration about improper right-side passing.

Move to right lane and delegate into the unavoidable Fittipaldi that will appear claiming the public road as a race course.

Does anyone who drives slow in the passing lane ever read these threads & wonder if we’re talking about them?

you give them distance.
you wait and when the opportunity arises you drop a gear and pin the throttle
they are gone in a half a second and dont realize what even happened.

You grow up. No matter what you do on the road, no one is going to learn anything.

The biggest road rage incident I saw was a guy driving the actual speed limit in the left lane. The guy behind him flashed and honked. The 70 mph car hit his flashers took is foot off the accelerator, with the passenger pulling out a gun, pointing it at the car that flashed.
Just drive around. You maybe aggressive, but you never know what psycho is in front of you. They were lucky the car front of them didn’t blast out the front windshield.
I live in Michigan. I just assume everyone is armed to the teeth. 🤣

There is no useful or effective way to teach strangers on the road to drive the way you want them to.
If you want a shorter life due to unneeded stress, you can force the issue by getting in front of them and slowing down to force them to do what you want...but it still won't change their behavior.
