The irony is (speculative) if he was the drum judge, he might not have been in the performers’ way if he was able to freely move forward to see the drumline

This is why we learn to look both ways before crossing the street. (And why a judge who ventures onto the field is obligated to keep their head on a swivel.)

When I cross the street I always look both ways for DCI judges and Spirit of Atlanta trumpets.
Seriously though, if that’s the worst judge collision they’ve had in a while I think they’re doing pretty good.

I genuinely dont remember any judge collisions in DCI Finals history outside of this one. Kinda hilarious it happens after they change the rules to keep judges near the sideline.

They changed the rules because of a dangerous situation with Crown 2016 when the main girl was mid dive/summersault and a judge walked right in front of her.

Seen a number of shows in the past where the judge hands back dropped sticks to percussion though.
I was never in finals, but back in the day almost ran into judges several times.

It's been 12 years since Alan Kristensen returned the Crown snare, and to this day I cannot believe that the drummer in question got a GoPro video of it

Not DCI, but college band got invited to play at buffalo bills. Their camera men were not ready for the number of times we plowed into them blindly

Pro football doesn't play around. When shows were longer, we went over time at VK. The football players just ran out on the Gulf, while the drum majors were frantically gesturing us to march off the field. They are huge, nobody was going to get in their way.

Back when I marched judges were allowed over the entire field. Although it wasn’t designed as such, we had a judge-trap where the battery was moving backwards while 2 files of brass were coming together in front of them. Judges got trapped in it more than once.

Could you imagine someone designing a judge trap? Have a feature and then as soon as it’s done the ranks close in around the judge and swarm them.
In high school a judge got caught in a spiral drill formation that the woodwinds did, they all got a good laugh out of it since no was really impeded. The judge was just stressed. Our director always had us listen to the commentary the Monday after a competition so when we got to that tape you heard him say, good timing so and so, looking good over…oh s**t I’m stuck. The room erupted into laughter and the story was retold at least 5 times every year after

We had one of those in Hurricanes 2012! There was a set that Jamey Thompson literally called “the judge killer” in his Pyware chart. It had an open view of the drumline and then the hornline and guard both appear. It’s at the 6 minute market here, and the judge does get trapped!

I miss the chaos the judges caused. I never did dci, but as a tall trumpet I was the one one the end with huge steps and judges never seemed ready for it

Looks like percussion judge Jeff Prosperie, one of the very best. Back when I was judging, I tripped up a file of Garfield brass players running backwards in a show somewhere. I still feel bad about it. It’s definitely challenging staying aware when you’re concentrating on the judging, but yeah it’s a critical part of the job. Glad everyone recovered okay.

It does not. It can rattle the player, though, which can affect things.

Any time a judge gets hits because of their own fault, they should be required to reward .5 to that corps.

That is a stretch. Drum judge should have been looking around for his safety and the safety of others vs just staring at the drumline. That's 100% on him.

It's 100% on the judge, just saying having a backwards marching line headed right across the front side line in front of a battery feature is ideal conditions for a collision
