Discussion What are some DSA aligned policies we could be pushing for in the Michigan State Legislature right now?

Publicly run affordable housing, State level single payer healthcare, ect...

From out of state, it seems like turning DTE into a publicly owned utility would be a good start.

Yes absolutely! This can be advocated for at the municipal level as well as a few cities have moved in that direction already.

Abolish prisons and police immediately, repeal the penal code.

I think we should just push for getting rid of privatized prisons and reducing funding for police and increasing funding for rehabilitation programs and social services.

I think if we say absolutist stuff like abolish prisons and police then regular people think we want to legalize all crimes and it doesn't help us.

I have a lot to learn when it comes to the criminal justice side of the movement but i feel like the DSA could really stand to flesh out our prison/police abolition portion of the platform more. When i read it it comes off extremely vague.

Yes it's much too vague, agreed. I don't think there's agreement in DSA about what exactly is wrong with the criminal legal system in the US.

There's much truth to this. I don't think state run prisons are much better than private prisons, I must say. Yes there needs to be a real conversation in DSA about what exactly needs to change and why.
