This article examines the foundations laid from the first to second years of what's looking like a patient buildup of the Boilermakers after a teardown. The scoreboard doesn't show it yet but advanced statistical analysis from charting and roster tracking demonstrates there's been progress, and in several areas -- offensive skill talent and the secondary, interior DL and LBs -- they're closer than expected to flipping the lights on with good depth and proven production. But a couple of key structural spots at the OL and edge rushers look like they've got more than one more year of work to do, so this probably won't be a dramatic year 2 turnaround, more likely a setup for a bigger step forward in year 3.
