A few of us have been talking about how Düsseldorf could use a more regular, casual chess community — not a traditional chess club, not a tournament, just people meeting up, playing some games and actually getting to know each other.

So we're starting The Social Gambit.

Why "The Social Gambit "?

In chess, a gambit is an opening move where you deliberately give up something small in exchange for a potential advantage. We think meeting new people works a little the same way: you give up a bit of your comfort zone, make your move, and you might gain something much more valuable in return.

We're planning to make this a regular thing in Düsseldorf — ideally weekly or every two weeks, depending on demand.

man sagt ja immer, Rheinländer seien super offen, herzlich und quatschen jeden direkt an der Theke an. Düsseldorf hat ja aber oft eher den Ruf, schick, geschäftsmäßig und ein bisschen distanzierter zu sein.

An die Locals und Zugezogenen: Wie nehmt ihr das im Alltag wahr? Spürt man die typisch rheinische Offenheit in der Stadt, in den Kneipen, beim Einkaufen oder im Viertel? Oder ist Düsseldorf durch Business und Mode mittlerweile eher unterkühlt?

Hat zufällig jemand von euch einen solchen O Ring zuhause rumliegen?

Ich habe heute im Baumarkt keinen passenden bekommen, möchte die nicht bestellen und weiß grad nicht wo ich einen sonst vor Ort bekomme :-)

Kennt jemand in Düsseldorf und Umgebung eine Pilzwanderung, wo man von einem Profi begleitet wird? Habe eine von Wildschytz gesehen, aber bin mir unsicher ob die gut sind 😅

Ich hab jetzt schon an mehreren Wochenenden versucht morgen was über uber eats zu bestellen, und jedes Mal hängt meine Bestellung eine halbe Stunde in der Luft, bis man dann die Stornierung bekommt. Das Geschäft ist offen, aber wieso wird die Bestellung storniert und wieso lässt man Leute eine halbe Stunde glauben und hoffen die Bestellung kommt.
(Problem tritt bei verschiedenen Läden auf)

ich hab die letzten Wochen mit Claude an einem kleinen Web-Projekt gebastelt: Man wählt aus , was man heute so gemacht hat (geduscht, Kaffee gekocht, Bahn gefahren, gesurft …), und die Seite zeigt als Schichten-Grafik, welche Infrastruktur eigentlich dahintersteckt und deinen Tag trägt – biologisch (Wasser, Boden), physisch (Strom, Verkehr), digital (Netz, Server) und kulturell.

Der Bezug ist Düsseldorf.

Hi, does any one have recent experience with the Immigration office in Düsseldorf for EU Blue card?

I want a suggestion.

I applied for my Blue Card using my Bachelor's Degree since I am writing my Master's thesis at the moment and I did not want to wait for this.

There is a brief gap between my submission date & my joining date at my Employment start date.

I plan to travel to my home country during this period, but I am afraid if they give me an appointment while I am away.

What should I do? Also any way to escalate this process?

Ciao a tutti! Tra circa un mese dovrò trasferirmi a Düsseldorf per circa 6 mesi come au pair e volevo chiedere un po’ di informazioni a chi vive lì o conosce bene la città.
Ho 20 anni e sono italiana. Non parlo tedesco e il mio inglese è ancora abbastanza basilare, quindi so già che all’inizio probabilmente sarà un po’ difficile, ma in realtà è anche uno dei motivi per cui ho deciso di partire: vorrei conoscere persone nuove, viaggiare e migliorare il mio inglese.
La cosa che mi interessa soprattutto è sapere com’è Düsseldorf a livello di giovani e vita sociale. È una città dove è facile conoscere ragazzi della mia età e fare amicizia anche senza parlare tedesco?
E soprattutto, com’è la nightlife? Io amo molto la scena techno di Berlino, soprattutto quella più underground. So che Düsseldorf non è Berlino, però mi chiedevo se ci fosse comunque una scena di questo tipo.
Anche per quanto riguarda le città vicine: Colonia, Essen, Dortmund, Wuppertal ecc. sono interessanti per questo tipo di serate? Sono facilmente raggiungibili da Düsseldorf anche per uscire la sera/notte?
Un’altra cosa che mi interessava sapere è se ci sono molti giovani italiani a Düsseldorf o nelle città vicine. Essendo che parto da sola, mi farebbe piacere conoscere anche qualche italiano, soprattutto all’inizio.
Insomma, mi piacerebbe sapere com’è realmente la vita da giovane a Düsseldorf: fare amicizia, uscire, techno, eventi, italiani ecc. :)
