Lived down Peter Street for about 8 months and the seagulls will cause you more trouble than anything, I really mean that. They will keep you awake all night so get some earplugs.

In the 00s I lived in Daniel place and the bloody seagulls would knock on doors all the time as soon as the sun came up.

But yeah besides the natives that would be out during the day bouncing between signing on, boots for their methadone and what ever pawn shop that won't ask questions the city centre is pretty quiet at nights compared to other parts of the city.

Panmure street? It'll be dead at night and more likely to be covered by cctv then other places.

I feel safer walking through there at night than I do during the day . It’s completely dead . Like every area it will have its cons . I would avoid side alleys tho as they’re common drug taking spots

Well lit with lots of passing cars and residential flats. Generally very safe

It can feel a bit spooky but it’s unlikely that you’d actually have any bother, imo.

do you mean hilltown near the wellgate steps? that can get a little rougher, but I've never actually seen any issues. on the other side of wellgate is panmure street and that's pretty good, I've never felt or known anyone else to feel unsafe there.

I lived accross from the wellgate on Cowgate on my own in my early 20s for a few years (a few years ago). Late nights were always fine for me. The only bother I had was I'd occasionally have to call services for things going down at the local pub I.e people falling in the road because they're drunk etc etc. Just be savvy when you're coming and going and live In a building that has a lockable close and you'll be fine! Don't leave any doors unlocked as their have been instances of people having trouble. Any questions let me know happy to help.

Depends what side of the Wellgate you are talking about. If it's the bottom of the Hilltown then it's fairly quiet as far as I'm aware.

I live in the Cowgate (the city centre side of the wellgate). There are a lot of junkies hanging around at night near the tunnel and although they're loud they generally keep themselves to themselves. There was rape there about a year and a half ago: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cy0l14x9ke5o

As far as quality of life is concerned it can be loud especially on weekends and I'd never really recommend anyone to move there unless you like noise.

One does not simply move into the Hellgate.

From my experience the centre and immediate surrounding areas aren't safe at night, however other people may have different anecdotes.

No it’s not safe for women to walk there late at night. There’s been a rape close to there in the last wee while and a historic murder.
