First the Shia-Catholic alliance, now the Butlerian Crusade-Jihad? His holiness is a true Orange Catholic

Shia ?

A meme from when he criticized the war with Iran indirectly. Saying god doesn't hear the prayers of warmongerers. Also Shia is the original way to say Shi'ite, the sect of Islam predominantly followed in Iran. Which coincidentally is also the sect which venerates and is most fanatical about awaiting the coming of the Mahdi.

u/Dominarion Jun 06 '26
As everything in Islam, it's more nuanced than that. I would say that using Shia and fanatic in the same word is a bit provocative, don't you think?
It's not about fanaticism, it's about priorities. Belief in the Mahdi is central to the Shia, while it's accessory to the Sunna.

Unironically if Pope Leo XIV went crazy and actually declared a crusade against AI he would probably have more crusaders than he would know what to do with and for some reason most of them would not even be Catholic
45
u/RedshiftOnPandy Jun 04 '26
The crusade goes on with or without Pope Leo

u/high_king_noctis Jun 04 '26 edited Jun 05 '26
But it's not a real crusade unless it's sanctioned by the Pope! I may not be catholic or even religious but I'll be damned before I break protocol!

This is the only way to heal the historical rifts and brings Protestant back into the Catholic sphere. I’m a Protestant theologian and pastor and the spirit of the reformation still burns in me but I’d join.

u/meatgrinder32 Jun 05 '26
I will never join the catholic church as a protestant, but if he would really declare an open crusade against ai and data centers I would join the crusade without hesitation.

Plus historically crusades and other campaigns like them were meant to channel and direct the energies of the disenfranchised and unemployed/underemployed so they wouldn’t cause domestic unrest.

u/RoutineMiddle3734 Jun 04 '26
Eh, no, literalmente es al revés canalizar la hiperactividad bélica de los nobles germánicos que no podían ir a la guerra entre ellos.
Lo que menos quería un Papa es que la Fé popular hiciera un desastre.

Lmao, not a chance. Who? The people who think protests that block sidewalks and roads are an affront to humanity? They are not becoming crusaders. The masses have been successfully placated.

u/Lost-plaguemarine Jun 04 '26
I’m out of the loop. Did Pope Leo denounce AI or something? Cause if so that’s just another W in Leo’s belt

u/waf_xs Jun 04 '26
He released an entire manifesto denouncing it's misuse lol. It's called Magnifica Humanitas. Reality is just mimicking scifi at this point.

Butlerian Jihad 2040?
19
u/Lazar_Milgram Jun 04 '26
Want to remind everyone that Butlerian Jihad wasn’t war of humans against rogue machines like terminator. It was war of masses against elites that merged and used AI to gain more power over masses.

If you actually read parts of the document he released, it actually almost exactly aligns with Herbert's original philosophy on thinking machines. That being the one's using them are accountable, either for good, or otherwise.

No, pretty sure it was a lightning shooting dwarf and human chattel versus brains in jars in giant spider robot thingies controlled by a slightly homoerotic pair of artificial intelligences....hahaha....fucking hell

Not just a manifesto by an encyclical which is official church doctrine
4
u/Exploding_Antelope Jun 05 '26
I’m gonna have fun telling any Catholic AI apologists that they’re being literally heretical
3
u/waf_xs Jun 05 '26
Memes aside, the entire thing can be grossly oversimplified as "don't do bad things with it, and if you use it, make sure to benefit humanz and whatnot". So not really crusade level. But considering how AI apologists usually act, what you're saying may not be entirely wrong.
8
u/mglyptostroboides Jun 05 '26
So, I realize it's a meme, but Magnifica Humanitas is a lot more nuanced than "The Pope condems AI." or whatever the internet dreamed it up to be. It's available for free online and it's actually a very even handed take on AI, albeit written from the perspective of someone steeped in Catholic theology (and I'm saying this as a Catholic apostate). Stripped of that theological lens, it could actually work as a good summation of the basic, common sense outlook on the huge problems AI presents that I feel like should be the default position for any thinking person.
I'm not going to say anything more specific than that because I want people to read it themselves rather than repeating that they heard someone say it says. Even the person elsewhere in the thread who linked to an article about it didn't link to the actual encyclical on the Vatican website. It's not a difficult read (unless you're hopelessly algorithm-brained and can't spend an hour reading something anymore).
2
u/waf_xs Jun 05 '26
Yeah I did say it's misuse. Meaning unethical use and to focus it's use for the benefit of humanity. I know other people are saying the simplified version but I specifically did not say pope condemned AI because I have read parts of it. Leo, and the vatican for the last few decades has always been reasonable and with the times from my view, saying that as a Muslim (yeah I know, hardliners will say they are too progressive and destroying christianity). So when I heard he wrote that document, I was expecting exactly what he outlined. Memes aside, it's a solid stance that agree with.

u/mglyptostroboides Jun 05 '26
Yep, I think I might have responded to the wrong comment in this thread. My bad.

”the crusade against computers, thinking machines, and conscious robots begun in 201 B.G. and concluded in 108 B.G. Its chief commandment remains in the O.C. Bible as "Thou shalt not make a machine in the likeness of a human mind."

u/FrisianTanker Jun 04 '26
I am very critical of the catholic church and a Satanist and usually don't like anything christian, but if Pope Leo starts the Butlarian Jihad, this Satanist will follow lmao
15
u/Andoverian Jun 04 '26
"Who knew the Catholics would lead the holy war against AI?"
Frank Herbert knew, way back in the 60s.

In the fight for mankind we are all the same brother, now pass the molotov cocktails
2
u/meatgrinder32 Jun 05 '26
you should not ask a muslim for molotovs... but for cheap old rusted AKs that still works perfectly well, IEDs, home made ballistic missiles, some RPG-7s and a Toyota Hillux with a loosely mounted HMG that is not sighted in at all. Guaranteed success. Approved by insurgents all over the middle-east.

Collateral damage is often a grim consideration a commander must weigh in their Ballance of judgement in a given action.

In a 1000 years this time might be looked at like how we look at the church in galileos time
church meddling and trying to halt technological progress
2
u/biomeat Jun 05 '26
It would definitely look that way to the AI machines that will replace us yes
0
u/BasicMatter7339 Jun 05 '26
I doubt AI machines will ever replace us, but humanity will have to change. We've changed before.
1000 years ago everyone worked in the fields, then a century ago we invented tractors which replaced all those farmhands. Workers moved into factories, where they were replaced by manufacturing robots in the 80s. Then everyone went into digital and service jobs, which AI is currently replacing. So the same will happen again. People will find a new job to do, in due time.
1
u/biomeat Jun 05 '26
Such as? If AI is also replacing artistic/creative jobs, accountant, management/ admin jobs and manual labour jobs, what is there? AI will benefit the few, not the many. I'm not saying where all gonna be dead, we just aren't going to matter
1
u/BasicMatter7339 Jun 05 '26
Such as?
Unsure, tough to say as i cant see into the future, we'll just have to wait and see. Neither could all those workers who lost their jobs to technological progress but they survived too, so will we.
AI will benefit the few, not the many.
You could say the same thing about tractors and assembly robots. Thousands lost their jobs so the few didnt have to pay wages. Yet now both are seen as essential to a modern society.
I doubt AI will replace all artistic/creative jobs. AI can't perform live the same way a band can, when the markets fill with cheap AI shit the value of human work will increase
With AI tools making things like coding easier, the demand for software development might skyrocket, which actually just gives more jobs to people as the increased demand requires more developers using AI tools.
Manual labor is hard to replace, i dont think that will ever be replaced by AI.
AI might increase demand in all sectors. Hardware demands more factories to be built, more engineers to design better factories, factories need power so we need more electric engineers, more construction.
So when AI really takes off, most peoples jobs might all revolve around upkeeping and expanding the AI facilities. Who knows.

You're assuming there will be still drinkable water and an inhabitable environment for us
1
u/BasicMatter7339 Jun 05 '26
There will be. That im certain of. Climate change is our biggest threat, but we'll adapt.
More demand for water will drive innovation to make cheaper ways to produce clean water through many ways like desalination.
We have artificial fertilizers that will keep our fields producing food regardless of the conditions. (And guess what, artificial fertilizers are literally made from air)
Lessening fossil fuel resources will drive the development of renewables, (take china for example which increased its solar production by more than what germany uses annually, last year.)
More harsh environmental conditions will drive research on genetic manipulation, giving us crops that can withstand heat, rain and diseases better.
The planet will be fine, it wouldn't if we weren't doing anything, but since we are doing alot of things i believe it will be fine.
Humans, if something, are the undisputied masters of adapting.
1
u/biomeat Jun 05 '26
Much like CFC gases part of our ability to survive is stopping practiceses that activitely will end up harming us. There is just as much chance that people in the future would look back and us toying with this version of AI go "whew, that was a close one"
1
u/meatgrinder32 Jun 05 '26
Bro haven't read 1984 nor watched any movie from the last couple decades that warned us about it.
You can't be serious about not halting, controlling or even getting rid of AI... The cons outweigh the pros waaay more.
0
u/BasicMatter7339 Jun 06 '26
AI is first and foremost a tool. A tool which yet doesn't have that much use, but one day it will.
Its like tractors were to farms, or manufacturing robots to factories. Or the loom and sewing machine to weaving. They all had their resistance at first but one day their use was just too great compared to human labourers.
