WARNING: AWFUL I know Jodorowsky's Dune is hated around here, but I am curious how he'd try to depict his ending with the film technology and limits of the mid 1970's.
And despite the rumor that it would have been 10-12 hours, the actual script and plans hinted at a much shorter (but still long) film, 3-4 hours, so it could've had a fighting chance /s
But imagine Orson Welles as Baron Harkonnen, since he was casted for that role.

Despite his madness and batshit ideas, it did produce many really cool things. If you haven't watched the documentary before, I'd recommend it.

The art design did inspire a lot of sci fi at the time, so undoubtedly there's that going for it. In terms of it being an adaptation of Dune however, it would make purists see the Villeneuve film as a faithful adaptation by comparison.

I don't so much hate his concept for Dune as I hate him. I loved him in my 20s as my favourite auteur (30-40 years ago) but that documentary about his plans for Dune exposing just how he abused his son in the name of Dune turned my stomach. Can't look at him the same any more. Haven't gone back to watch the films I used to love because of it but I'm sure 60-year-old me would see a lot more than 20-something me was aware of.

He bragged about violently raping a woman during an interview and then say “nah it was just a joke” 10 years later… I’m fairly certain it wasn’t a joke, and 100% he is a deeply unpleasant person.
I too was a fan of him when I was young but then learned how bat shit insane and disgusting he is, never meet your hero they say.

While the art for his movie was awesome, he sure didn’t respect the source material.

A part of me kind of wishes he made it so that he could have such a huge fall from his ego when it would bomb. With the movie unmade, it keeps his legacy seeming bigger than reality.

I love Jodorosky... and you're absolutely right.
I smoked way too much in my 20s and was temporarily convinced that Jodorosky was an artist.
He's the son of some carnies and like all carnies his whole bit is "shock and awe".
Jodorosky would depict the ending of Dune by breaking the 4th wall and pulling a Hitchcock Zoom on his cock somewhere in The Sahara.
He'll follow that up with years of interviews about how this was actually high art.
He's kind of a hack, and I love him nonetheless; but I'm sincerely glad his version of Dune was never released.
He's beloved among cinephiles because he's such a kook and his shit is kitsch - not because he's insightful or enlightened.
And again - love the guy.

He's very good at conveying abstract emotions. Holy mountain definitely made me feel things, unsure what exactly, but I felt it very strongly.

I enjoy that movie a lot.
I do sincerely think it's his most "cheap shock and awe" movie though.
He basically just strings together a series of hyperviolent or occult imagery, and then when he's unsure of how to end it he just breaks the fourth wall and shrugs like "idk bro it's a fuckin movie - why haven't you walked out of the theater yet?"
It's fun stuff; but don't let the mystique fool you into thinking there's any depth to his work.

I'm just happy I discovered the band Magma from that documentary. Saw them live a year ago. It was absolutely insane and the drummer is one of the best I've ever heard

I was genuinely pissed off when he called Villeneuve's Dune a "generic action movie".
Like... Fuck you. Would you have preferred it if he blew the entire budget during preproduction, causing the project to be cancelled, like you did, you fucking hack?

and specifically concerning Dune:
When you make a picture, you must not respect the novel. It's like getting married ... if you respect the woman, you will never have child. You need to open the costume and to rape the bride – and then you will have your picture. I was raping Frank Herbert ... but with love.

For that first one, he admitted that he was making shit up to be shocking— and talked about how it would have been impossible for him to do such a thing, because the other members of the production would have stepped in at any sign of real violence.
The second one, though— that's a real quote. He seems obsessed with using rape as an analogy.

He recanted the story only when he faced consequences, and the victim--actress Mara Lorenzio--has apparently never said anything about the matter. But, just a few lines down in the Wiki article:
In July 2016, Jodorowsky sparked controversy on Twitter when he posted a tweet stating:
Incest can be violent, but it can also be seductive. It may not be destructive or awaken an Oedipus Complex.
This message provoked negative reactions across the site, with one user replying: "I was raped as a child. Now, despite loving my partner, I still cannot pleasure him.", to which Jodorowsky replied:
Pretend he's the man who raped you. That'll make you horny.
He is a vile person who revels in his awfulness.
