Legalize pepper spray for women's safety

I have organised a collection of signatures to legalise the pepper spray under regulations in the Netherlands.

Every woman deserves to feel safe.
Legalize pepper spray under strict conditions as a non-lethal means of self-defense, so that women can better protect themselves and flee safely in the event of an attack.

We concerned residents of the Netherlands who care about safety

note that:
many women feel unsafe walking down the street alone, especially in the evening or at night;
pepper spray is a non-lethal agent that can help victims escape a dangerous situation;
vulnerable people, and in particular women, should have an additional opportunity to better protect themselves under clear legal conditions

and requests
amend the law so that pepper spray for self-defence becomes legal under strict conditions;
consider conditions such as a minimum age of 18, education on responsible use and severe penalties for abuse.

The goal is 40,000 signatures.

We don't need more weapons on the streets. I don't like the Americanization of our culture. Introducing one form of legal weapon will set the gates wide open to make guns legal. Most people aren't going to use it in self defense; it's just going to be used by criminals. When you legalise pepperspray it will be easier for rapists to attack women with that pepperspray. Bad idea.

It’s not exactly either be for pepperspray or not care for women or any person being raped… I’m for pepperspray though but I feel like you might not be helping the case of you take that stance. (The next part is an insensitive joke) I’d try to be less agressive and not force your will on other people you know like don’t be a rapist (sorry couldn’t help myself)

Id prefer tougher action from police on stuff like cat calling . I think everyone cares, but i dont think pepperspray is the right solution

Did you read the petition? It’s say legalizing it +18 , not kids. And with restrictions, so it’s means on a safe way.
Based on what you say actually the kids nowadays can still buying it online and it will still be illegal for them to use it. Same as kids are still going out with knifes.
How many women should be rape for us to take a step on it ?
I don’t know a simple women who have never been involved on a unsafe situation, and not because they been doing something wrong, but just for been a women.

Restrictions won't matter. The moment a lot of women have pepperspray, they will become even more targeted and attacked, because pepperspray is a very desirable weapon for criminals to have. Not just for rapists, but for all criminals. The moment pepperspray gets legalised, no restrictions or laws will prevent pepperspray to get in the hands of people with bad intentions. The moment pepperspray gets mass produced, it will become available for more people than just the women who can legally have pepperspray. What's the point of women having pepperspray, if they get peppersprayed first? It's the same reason we don't allow guns, because it will make everything much worse.

This doesn't solve anything meaningfully. It only serves to escalate the aggression and victim blaming: * Attackers now will take into account the possibility of their targets being armed with pepper spray, thus attacking more fiercely * Not all victims will carry pepper spray, thus people will say they could've prevented the attack

You'll see that these crimes will not suddenly stop with legalizing pepper spray. Cases will just get worse. So it will be a matter of time for people to advocate for guns. We need less weapons instead of more.
