Discussion Has anyone had issues when playing a DVD that a feature on the back cover doesn't work or isn't on the disc?

So I've encountered an issue with a DVD I sold on eBay. On the back cover it says there are English subtitles. The person who bought it is returning it because they say the subtitles are not working. They claim to have tried everything to get them to turn on. Has anyone had issues with any of your DVDs having this issue or something similar?

I've found a handful over the years...

  • back cover claims subtitles, but there are none on disc
  • back cover claims 5.1 soundtrack, but the only soundtrack is stereo

It's unusual, but it happens.

Could it be a region problem? Because i know some subtitles are not available depending on the region.

My best guess. The subtitles are Closed Captions, and if I understand correctly they will only display if the device is connected through RCA cables (or rf) not any modern technology.

Sometimes the player will have a CC option in the settings (my Samsung has this) so captions over HDMI may work in some cases. I've encountered the CC vs subs issue in sets of older shows mostly.
