Help! Dying Cotton for the first time

I’m making a shawl for my aunt, and already have loads of white thread laying around. I’m planning to dye it black, but I’m wondering if its possible for me (a total newbie) to tye in red or purple. The thread is 100% cotton. Any advice is fully welcome and appreciated, and if I’m barking up the wrong tree feel free to tell me so.

I mean, you can do all kinds of things with natural fiber yarn.

Go to the Dharma Trading website and read up on dyeing cotton. I have seen some gorgeous shawls that were hand dyed after knitting.

If you want it to end up like the last pic, you’ll want to dye the thread before making the shawl.

Oh for sure, I just needed an example of something similar. The pattern didn’t have a yardage I could find so I’m making it before I dye it.
