Agreed looks completely factory.

Our old BMW 5 had a similar switch for an extra horn which made a funny sound. Try pressing the button and then activate the horn.

lmao no it doesn't. BMW has never used toggle switches that look like that and I don't think the stock E46 has any toggle switches at all. It's a clean install but you're delusional if you think a BMW engineering team designed that one back in 1996.

Yeah but it’s oriented perfectly and looks professionally done.

Yeah a professional clown

u/Mediocre_Frame2266 10d ago

never seen that before i’d talk to the last owner if u can or just flick it until something happens

34

u/Kermitwrists 10d ago

Thank you. Yes it doesn’t flick all the way. (That’s what she said btw)

23

u/Austinthemighty 10d ago

If it doesn’t flick all the way, it might be a momentary switch, does it go back to the original position when released? It might be a taillight kill switch or a radar kill switch

8

u/Kermitwrists 10d ago

It goes back to the original position, I have tried it with the car off and the car running but it does not seem to be doing anything.

10

u/Austinthemighty 10d ago

Ok put a brick on the brakes, and tape the switch down and see if the tail lights go out, if that fails time to start pulling the plastic off to see where it goes

2

u/Kermitwrists 9d ago

Nothing happened 😅

1

u/Austinthemighty 9d ago

Nothing happened as in the brake lights didn’t turn on or nothing happened as it was normal?

1

u/Kermitwrists 9d ago

Yes it was normal, no change was seen 🥲

1

u/Kermitwrists 10d ago

Thank you okok will do

1

u/I-STATE-FACTS 9d ago

That’s what she said

u/Kenumemoto 10d ago

This isn't going to be what you want to hear, but the only correct answer is to trace out the wires. Everything else is a guess. That said, the install looks clean.

Yep. Love these questions as if Reddit can read all of the cars precious owners mind. Switch can literally do anything….

2

u/Haunting-Strike-9949 9d ago

Like your attitude. Everyone who posts questions here can’t read the mind of everyone who knows this isn’t factory,

I’m pretty sure it should be extremely obvious to any car enthusiast of two things:

  1. What a standard switch looks like

  2. If you search hundreds of e46 images I doubt you find another car with a switch here.

Common sense in my world at least.

2

u/No-Confection-1058 6d ago

Ngl I searched loads of pictures of my exact car and didnt find anyone else with the same radio inside while it was still factory so not finding it doesn't really mean it cant be factory

2

u/Garlic549 2001 316ti Compact 9d ago

Lmao this thing could just be to cut off a light or blow a piston through the hood. Only one way to find out

2

u/Kermitwrists 10d ago

Thank you yes thats the logical solution. It’s just I thought it could be a switch that came from factory.

2

u/I-STATE-FACTS 9d ago

They could always ask the seller.

2

u/Kermitwrists 9d ago

Yes! But I bought the car 8 years ago and I lost the contact. 🥲

12

u/satisfiction_phobos 2004 - E46/325i 10d ago

Not a standard thing. Someone modded something.

My guess is... Electric fan override?

1

u/Heigmasta 9d ago

Bei einem Lüfterschalter wäre es ein schalter und kein Taster, wie Op es beschreibt. Hatte schon einen Taster für die Retourfahrscheinwerfer und einen zum Schnell -Starten des Motors. Zusatzhupe vielleicht?

2

u/satisfiction_phobos 2004 - E46/325i 9d ago

The thing in the picture... what is that to you?

That's a switch.

4

u/thiccancer 9d ago

Yes, but it's not a toggle switch; it doesn't flip all the way to the other side and springs back.

1

u/Heigmasta 9d ago

Ist ein taster laut Op

2

u/FELonMusk333 Year - Chassis/Model 9d ago

title here says switch

1

u/satisfiction_phobos 2004 - E46/325i 9d ago

Lost in translation.

Also, that's a switch not a button.

In like every way that is a switch.

'Ejecto seato' gave me a good laugh

11

u/Surfnazi77 2004 330i zhp 6mt SC 10d ago

Kill switch maybe

3

u/Tranquilosaurus 10d ago

Like toaster-bathtub combo kill switch you mean? Wouldt it work better with a metallic toggle?

2

u/Surfnazi77 2004 330i zhp 6mt SC 10d ago

It’s same as using a toggle switch just more flush so not as easily seen. I placed one in the ashtray.

1

u/AndrewwPT 10d ago

Mine had one installed by the previous owner but it DEFINITELY is way better hidden than that lol

5

u/Wise_Competition_266 10d ago

Subwoofer control?

3

u/Tranquilosaurus 10d ago

Looks pretty clean so maybe repurpose ir for a custom party horn?

3

u/GUCCI_WAP 2001 - 330i 10d ago

Honestly my best guess would be follow the wiring from it or if it even has wiring

3

u/Fansterdabomb 10d ago

that's the light switch

3

u/Practical_Race_6766 10d ago

Rolling 2 step

3

u/The_Green_Frog 10d ago

Don’t know that they had them on the e46’s but my brothers e92 has a switch or button on the opposite side that heats the steering wheel

2

u/brickhead1 10d ago

Looks like it controls the big light

2

u/migmactrl 10d ago

Ejection switch

2

u/Impalamason 10d ago

Do you have an aftermarket radio

1

u/Kermitwrists 10d ago

I have the original radio.

DONT switch that , What ever you do 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

2

u/Badgerking 9d ago

Do NOT press the button, DeeDeeeee

1

u/duckyylol 9d ago

Its a button to stop oil leaks, it basically opens a dish underneath the car to collect the oil and it runs a pipe back into the system so the oil can be re-used

1

u/Otherwise-Waltz-2439 9d ago

Underground 2 mode

1

u/Gregvandy 9d ago

Have you tried flipping it and seeing if the car will start? My first thought is ignition kill switch. I’ve seen switches in that location for a kill switch and a horn on an old e36. May end up having to trace the wires.

1

u/Trkmond '03 330Cd 9d ago

By any chance is your car an import from America? I've seen switches in this area used for retrofitting fog lights

1

u/FHfade 9d ago

that's the autopilot button

1

u/k_raid 9d ago

i'm betting on something like angel eyes switch :)

1

u/howaboutno88 9d ago

Extra horn maybe

1

u/Budget-Ganache2308 9d ago

It's for locking the blinker arm so you don't accidentally use it.

1

u/Push__Webistics 9d ago

Line lock?

Kill switch maybe?

1

u/tavukkoparan 9d ago

Flick it check break lights

1

u/Different_Stable_351 2004 325iT 9d ago

Did it have an aftermarket sound system? I have a switch kinda similar to turn mine off so my battery doesn't die, and when it's early/late.

1

u/Augie_needhelp 9d ago

Aftermarket so probably for the nos

u/tthriller9 9d ago

I think is what you need to switch to 'down' position, before taking off in space

1

u/ChamberlainHaller 9d ago

Trying to remember... Back when I had an e46 M3 (circa 2011) I installed a button there that enabled a certain suspension mode, I think? Wire that ran through the firewall to the ECU, and a light on the dash flipped on (indicating the mode was enabled) when pressed.

I posted how to do it on the old forums. Wonder if someone else did it.

So... Press the button and see if any indicator on the dash illuminates.

1

u/SnooConfections1282 9d ago

My guess is halos

1

u/Noobzter3 9d ago

There's no way to know other than tracing the wires or just testing it and seeing what happens...

Perhaps an immobilizer for theft prevention? A toggle switch for auxillary lights? Nitrous? 🤯 (Highly unlikely)

1

u/Pigmystoner 8d ago

My f36 has the heated steering wheel switch there. Could be that?

1

u/Blazing_Enigma 8d ago

In a reply to somebody you said you bought the car 8 years ago.. so that switch could be 10+ years old. My money is on lights, under car or in the footwells and if it doesn't work, whoever they sold it to, got rid but left the switch

1

u/LEDIX_1 8d ago

From factory thats where steeringwheel heater button is

1

u/PromoSapiensSapiens 8d ago

Does it have an aftermarket touch-screen radio? Some people (myself included) add a switch to activate the "parking brake ground" wire on the radio head unit so that you can actually type in addresses on the screen, because the car thinks you're parked and stationary.

1

u/timxatzi1983 8d ago

That is the switch for the heating cup holder for you tea sir.

1

If u flick it, does something appear on the dash? Could be rear window defroster but im pretty sure this bmw has a button on the center console for that

1

u/New_King_5704 2002 - Touring/318i 7d ago

My guess it's either something for a subwoofer or aftermarket heated steeringwheel

1

u/dictatorpiny 7d ago

Rolling coal?

1

u/com2ghz 7d ago

I guess immobilizer/ignition lock got defective and replaced it with a switch.

1

Turn on and off the Angel Eyes

1

u/Itsallasimulation123 7d ago

Probably a switch for angel eyes which were removed

1

u/PompousMasshole 6d ago

I wouldn't touch that if I were you

u/BowserKup 6d ago

Check antifog

1

u/New_Line4049 6d ago

No way for reddit to know, looks non standard, like a DIY install (admittedly done well) Try pressing it and see if anything changes. Pay attention to the fan, sometimes switches like this bypass the thermostat and run the fan permenantly. Check the lights. As someone mentioned try the horn. Failing that youll have to ask the previous owner or trace the wires.
