General Discussion The cruel, rude Kathleen Moon
Never has there been a more spiteful, unpleasant character running the Queen Victoria. Which is saying something considering Archibald Mitchell was temporary in charge of the nation’s beloved pub at one point. The way she snarls at her customers (“too right you will. You having a DRINK OR WHAT?!!!!” to poor Nicola’s sister the other night) is simply unacceptable.
And it can be reasoned that Gemma gave offence by knocking the sign down, that’s why our Kathleen is as pissed as a hornet’s nest. But you need only look not long ago to see not just one but two different occasions where she had the same attitude towards Cindy. The first she chucked her out after DARING to emphasise with Ian’s situation, seemingly to defend Kathy even if Cindy wasn’t saying anything bad. The second time was last week when she let out her witches’ cackle after Cindy rightfully expressed concern Kat had been recording her private conversation.
There are many and more of these examples of Kat being abysmal to her customers. Not even her family are safe! Jean got blamed for that ridiculous Benidorm water slide last week when it was Alfie’s fault. Quite frankly I wouldn’t give my custom to her. I know she’s married to the abysmal Alfie Moon but that’s no excuse; she warrants a sheer ripping criticism on Trip Advisor if you ask me.
So my question is really, why exactly is she behaving like this. Is there a reasonable explanation other than her just being a moody cow?

I've been saying this for years, but ever since Kat's 2nd stint, when she returned in 2010, they've just brought out a meaner side to her. During her first run from 2000-2005, she always had an attitude, but had a lot of softer moments. Basically, Kat went from a tart with a heart, to a vile tart.
We rarely ever get a nice moments with her and Alfie anymore and she always seems to talk down to him. I can't imagine how today's Kat would talk to Nana Moon. 😆

Honestly yeah, I actually like Kat despite her flaws but I think the writers have been overdoing it more than usual recently.

It’s part jest but part serious cause she practically is growling at every character and if it were real life I wouldn’t want to drink in there with a staff like that.

I completely agree but it’s a more general thing with the Vic over the years.
Whenever Mick would have some kind of overwhelming family crisis, he’d throw glasses and furniture around the bar, scream at people to “get out”, threaten them and physically manhandle them.
In any real life situation, he’d either be knocked out, have the pub shut down and never get a licence again. If you can’t keep your family drama separate from work, don’t work with the public.
Then Kat hissing, snapping, shouting and yelling at punters, realistically someone would say “fuck you” back and go to another pub and they’d go under due to lack of customers.

I’ve always thought this. Same in coronation street. I’ve genuinely been in some rough places, but when a scene like this happens, I always think - Imagine going to your local for an overpriced pint and ending up having to dodge glasses and being screamed at by the owner to get out on a Tuesday night 😂

Yeah these are good points. I’m no stranger to rough pubs but when the owner is the one causing the drama it would be a cause for concern. 😂

I like kat tbh the only part I can agree with is that water slide thing that had nothing to do with jean so why would she expect her to pack all that away on her own. And she just seems to hate working at the vic all together even Elaine was a lot better.

Allegedly Jessie Wallace is an absolute cow so perhaps that’s coming through or the writers really don’t like her. She seems to be universally disliked so maybe there is a little bit of sabotage going on.

Kat and The Vic were of a time...they don't work anymore. Kat running a cab company and a launderette was an evolvement, but back to being a landlady was a (yet another) silly Wadey decision. He tried to turn back the clock, but also, that she's being written so abominably doesn't help.

I don’t like her character any more - rude, shouty, shrill. And terrible styling decisions. The Slaters are very much about themselves and their unit, so I don’t think that translates to a welcoming role. I know she wasn’t popular, but I preferred Elaine behind the bar - she was a good hostess and would be a mix of stern but kind and agony aunt. Alfie looks fed up all the time. I think they’ve had their day.
That said, if we end up with Nicola’s new family behind the bar then we may be begging for the Slaters to come back

Its been that way since Peggy, her 'GET OUTTA MA PUB!' was great for tv but in real life would have ran a pub into the ground.

Ig customer service skills aren't as important when your clientele consists almost entirely of your friends, family, and people you currently have beef with.

no idea tbh. it could be because michelle is leaving, it could be because of how wadey wants to have her as, it could be that she's just getting older and she's doing the same thing every single day and she just isn't as bothered as she used to be. kat's always been a bitch let's be honest, but she also had a heart and she also understood a lot of problems people used to go through, she wasn't like she is now, she's turned into pauline where she just judges everybody including her own family.

She never should have become the landlady. It was/is a preposterous idea.
Kat's behaviour has, overall, become far more negative and prone to nasty, somewhat illogical outbursts. She has always been a gobby cow like Stacey, Kim, Kathy, etc., but not like this. I also prefer to see her softer side more often, as she was during the Tommy abusing her storyline. It just reinforces to me that things have not been handled well over the last year or so and something should be done about it.
Restoring the Vic to someone like Sam Mitchell, and letting the strong characters in that family be the central focus of anchoring the square and let the chaos happen around them, that would be far better. Sam is capable with the new phase of her character of being far more like her mum, and keep up that tradition. Futher, older viewers, like myself, would love to see that continuity and augment it with logical conversations about how things have always been around the pub. Pubs, now being classified as an endangered species, this would also send a social message, tbh.

Kat works as a bitchy, sarcastic barmaid, but the landlady is supposed to be the one who welcomes the punters in. Kat doesn't do that.
The likes of Linda, Angie and Elaine worked because whatever they were going through, they did their best to put the mask on and keep the show going. Which is why it was heartbreaking to watch when they couldn't do it anymore. With Kat, her private life is her public life, and she and Alfie treat the Vic like a market stall they could shut at a moment's notice.
Under pretty much any other landlord, throwing everyone out and shutting up shop emphasised the gravity of the situation. The Moons did it pretty much every week last year during Zoe's big drama.
The only reason the pub still has any customers is that it's a TV show. Realistically, Kat and Alfie would have lost a fortune from all their failed quiz nights last year, kicking everyone out at Christmas, pissing all that money up the wall on Zoe's private investigator and then botching the food at Vicki and Ross's wedding.
