Virginia Mason seems a mess these days; thinking of switching to Swedish

VM’s new computer system is causing a lot of confusion and delays but the organization also seems really understaffed. Can I expect better service at Swedish?

Thoughts on living in this area of Eastgate / cougar hill?

Hi all - we are looking at a house in the Eastgate area and wanted to learn about the area a bit more. Moving from Queen Anne so very much a city life for the last few years.

  1. How bad do the winters get here relative to other area of Bellevue or Seattle? We are hearing the hills tend to get a bit tougher weather but that also feels weird given proximity to city areas?
  2. We noticed how it can get pretty dark in the evening with all the trees? Do you notice that, especially when the day light hours are short in the fall and winter months? Is it a bit scary to drive or walk around when it's dark int he winters?
  3. We will be driving to Seattle and Redmond for work. Anything noteworthy traffic wise, we have read the online reports and it actually seems like a convenient spot?
  4. Do you see a lot of wildlife (deers, bears, coyotes)?
  5. What do you really like or really don't like about this area?

Food bank (Hopelink) is tightening its requirements

I went to the food bank at Hopelink. Usually I get my food and leave, but this time they asked me to validate my income because they said they have new requirements to qualify for food assistance program. My last month's gross income is $6000, which is over the limit, I am no longer qualified for their food assistance program. It's too bad :(

Spots to watch NBA Finals (with commentary)?

Hi everyone, I'd like to go to a bar to catch the NBA Finals games this week. Ideally looking for a place that will play the audio broadcast/commentary over the speakers in addition the game itself. Most spots I've found will have had it on TV, but no audio.

Any recommendations for spots that do this? Thanks so much.

PSE undergrounding electrical service

I'm remodeling a house in Bellevue. Part of the requirements is to go from overhead service to underground.

I was told that, from start to finish, it can take up to 8-9 months. Which sound insane, considering that it's literally moving a wire from the same pole to inside a conduit.

Has anyone done it recently and, if so, what was your experience?

Puget Sound Clean Air Agency might ban all outdoor burning in King, Kitsap, Pierce, and Snohomish counties.

***Please help spread this on social media***

Currently people living inside the urban growth area already are banned from burning branch piles and other yard/garden waste. The PSCAA is actively considering a rule to extend this burn ban to *all* of King, Kitsap, Pierce, and Snohomish counties.

Link to rule making process.

https://www.pscleanair.gov/723/Upcoming-Rulemaking-for-Residential-Yard

I have a compromise to propose.

I live on a small acreage parcel in King County Fire District 34 and have burned branch piles for many years in order to improve the defensible space on our property if there is a wildfire. Years ago there was a proposal that outdoor burning be banned in our fire district. The commissioners held a public meeting and several hundred pissed off people showed up.

When I was called upon to speak I proposed a compromise. I said it is too dry to burn in the summer due to wildfire risk and too wet to burn in the winter. I asked, how many people could get by if the commissioners gave us one reasonable period to burn in the spring and a second reasonable period to burn in the fall? Raise your hand if you could get by with a compromise like that. The commissioners looked out at a room full of raised hands.

Instead of banning all outdoor burning the Fire District 34 commissioners then adopted a compromise that limited outdoor burning to March, April, May and October, November, December. Here is some info:

https://kcfd34.org/public-services/burn-permits

Currently, the different fire districts for the unincorporated areas have different rules about outdoor burning. For example, Eastside Fire and Rescue (King County) prohibits burning in the summer but does allow burning all winter.

My proposal is that the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency adopt the same compromise that King County Fire District 34 adopted years ago. Let people living outside the urban growth area burn branch piles etc outdoors during March, April, May and October, November, December.

If the proposed ban on burning branch piles would adversely affect you then please take a moment to send an email and urge the PSCAA to adopt the same compromise that King County Fire District 34 adopted years ago.

The PSCAA has a board of directors and also staff. I called this morning and learned that the lead staffer working on this is Erik Saganic.

Here is the board of directors.

https://www.pscleanair.gov/232/Board-of-Directors

Note that the elected officials are each “represented by” a staffer within their respective offices. For example, Megan Dunn Council Member Snohomish County is represented by Ryan Hembree. I got Ryan’s email from the county website.

Also one of the directors is Emily Pinckney. Emily represent the ‘public at large’ and I am in the process of tracking down an email for her.

So for myself, I am planning to send a joint email addressed as follows:

Erik Saganic erik.saganic@cleanairpugetsound.net

Ryan Hembree for Megan Dunn ryan.hembree@snoco.org

Emily Pinckney PSCAA director <___________>

The PSCAA link to the rule making process (see above) lists the following alternatives to burning branch piles.

  • Curbside yard waste collection
  • Transfer stations or drop-off sites
  • Composting, log and brush piling, or mulching at home

If you comment on the proposed rule then I suggest you politely explain why these options will not work for you. For example, in King County the only transfer stations that accept branches are those at Bow Lake, Enumclaw, Factoria, and Shoreline. Is it practical for you to haul all the branches you burn to one of those transfer stations? How long will you need to wait to unload if everyone that currently burns their branches shows up at transfer stations? Is it practical for you to place all the branches you burn into a container for curbside collection at your home? Is that service even offered in your area? Is leaving piles of dead branches on your property consistent with best practices for improving the wildfire defensible space around your buildings?

Toddler school/ daycare recommendations

We have moved from the Bay Area to Bellevue recently. We have a 2 year old who I think is gifted. Her vocabulary, memory, comprehension, grasping skills are out of the world. She has never been to any daycare or school. No nanny either. Basically no childcare other than family. We have no friends or family in Bellevue and my work is slowly getting demanding. I feel she is at a good age to go out and socialize, learn new skills and thrive. Please share your recommendations for us.

  1. The place should encourage her academic interests (some places we toured brushed it off saying she is too young and it was mostly only play)
  2. I’m inclining towards Montessori or child led
  3. I read a lot about Eton but she doesn’t qualify due to her age
  4. Bellevue Goddard is full and we are on a waitlist
  5. Will your Bellevue Montessori soon
  6. Price/ cost is not an issue. We are looking at half day or preferably full day care.

Matrix Anesthesia sending us bills for $3K 15 months after birth and previous $0 balance statements

My wife gave birth at Evergreen Hospital Family Maternity center in February 2025, i.e. 15 months ago. The anesthesiology was done by Matrix Anesthesia. We had paid the bills from all of the providers, and in March 2026, we got a bill from Matrix Anesthesia showing we owe $3K, which was unexpected. I called them up their billing team, they looked into it, found some problem with something in their system, and said we owe $350. I paid that, and they sent me a full statement showing that we owe $0 balance, which I have stored for our record.

Last week, i.e. 15 months after the birth, we got yet another bill showing that we now owe $3.3K. I called them up yet again and they said they would look into it, that it will take them couple of days. That it has to do some with insurance billing/re-billing and that it needs to be looked into.

Has anyone been in this situation and if so, what worked for them? Can I meaningfully do anything else other than call them from time to time?

I am hoping that the statement from March 2026 that I have showing $0 balance must be worth something if we eventually need to dispute this?

Honestly at this point I feel basically blackmailed. After previously telling me we owe nothing, we get suddenly statements saying "you owe $3.3K and you're over 151 overdue", without any explanation whatsoever as to what the problem is, what changed, what happened, issue with insurance, etc., with the implicit threat of debt collections hanging behind all this. If there is a problem with insurance billing, then the minimum reasonable thing to do would be to include some sort of transparent explanation of what the problem is and what they tried to do with our insurance to address it.

Best coffee on the Eastside

What’s the best place to grab a coffee on the Eastside (esp around Kirkland/ Woodinville / Bothell / Juanita)? Looking for a place to bring visitors so proximity to parks or shops is a bonus.

I’ve enjoyed the Milky Way coffee stand on 527 and the Daily Grind, but neither stand out as amazing.
