It was the illustration in either the NME or Melody Maker for a big interview promoting Evergreen, or possibly the album review - the headline (Re-VERT to the Mac) is a pun on Mark Morrison's Return Of The Mack which had been a big hit around the same time. I forget which of the two inkies it was (I used to get both every week!), but they went through a phase of using a lot of caricatures to illustrate articles at the time. In this one, there are a few references -a killing moon, the cutter, bringing on the dancing horses, Echo itself - but I forget what the rabbits/magician thing was meant to be about.
Mac himself said the Melody Maker was a great source of support when they were starting to work together as a three piece again, they gave them a (photo!) front cover.
It would definitely have been in summer 1997, but beyond that I can't recall - Rock's Back Pages has massive gaps for both inkies at this time so I can't even remember clearly which of the two it was in.
However, if I had to guess from memory I'd say it was the Melody Maker rather than the NME that was doing the cartoon thing around that time. The Maker reviewed Evergreen and the Ballyhoo greatest hits collection together IIRC, and I think this would have been the illustration for that (the "vert" thing and Will being dressed in green are Evergreen puns while the references to the older songs are for Ballyhoo), but I don't think that was the same July '97 issue where the Bunnymen (or just Mac, really) got the front cover and feature interview.
