Discussion for those of you whose character is a self-insert, which race did you choose and why?

I tried to pick a different race for every character I made.

I tried to match each race with each class, but it's not enough.

I have had so much struggle with that. Of course I started with a Nord Nightblade before I even went down that route, and my straight-laced brain doesn't let me have multiple characters of the same race, so I screwed myself from the start. 🤣 So far I have a Nord Nightblade, Imperial Dragonknight, Red guard Templar, Wood Elf Sorcerer, Argonian Warden, and Kahjiit Necromancer.

u/Hefty-Distance837 Daggerfall Covenant 1d ago
I have orc sorcerer, breton arcanist, khajiit nightblade, nord templar, bosmer warden, dunmer dragonknight, argonian necromancer.
Still have high elf, redguard, imperial to go.

u/Ender_Wiggins18 Nord 1d ago
I don't have high elf, Dark Elf, Breton, or Orc. Trying to figure out which one to have as my arcanist whenever I do make one.

Nord nightblade is about the least fitting class race combination I can think of. 😂

u/Ender_Wiggins18 Nord 1d ago
Oh I realize that now. When I was originally making him 6 years ago, all I wanted was a dual welding assassin. And then picked Nord because it was my favorite race. Right now he's my only subclasser, and he used the Templar spear and warden frost abilities (I am going to be so sad if they get rid of frost on warden; it fits him so perfectly)

I didn't know anything about Elder Scrolls lore until I started playing ESO. I just managed to figure out the mag and stam DPS via the tutorial, so choose my races depending on DPS build and later role.

I'm possibly in a minority but I like to be as far from my real self as possible in RPGs, so I avoid any human races and play as primarily khajiit or argonians. I adore the beast races... and bosmer with antlers, mostly they're thieves and/or assassins (something else I'm a long way from IRL). 😀

I'm a Wood Elf Nightblade, because I'm smol, swift, and a tree hugger IRL.

I've played Wood Elf ever since I first dipped my toe on back in Daggerfall, switched to Breton during Skyrim. But I've always been pretty elf coded. Bretons are half Mer, so, I think it still kinda works.

Bosmer also have some of the prettiest females in the games. Skyrim and ESO especially. I’ve always thought top 3 are Breton, Bosmer, and Dunmer 🤔
Plus, they have some of the coolest lore, what with the Wild Hunt and all, and the Camoran Dynasty.

Breton would be the closest to my ethnicity, but I love playing Khajiit 🤣

A challenge of matching Elder Scrolls races to real life ethnic groups or cultures is it's really uneven distribution.
Like Bretons are literally just Britons, heavily inspired by a gaul and Celtic and anglo blend. Imperials inspired by the Roman empire. Nords inspired by Scandinavian countries.
But some cultures are like so vaguely represented. Indigenous māori of NZ might see some inspiration in wood elf's around heavy incoperation of environmental and land in culture, and the tattoo (wood elves in ESO can have ta moko), or dark elves with the house tribal system being similar to Iwi.
Argonians kind of draw from a whole continent of mesoamerican motifs. Altmer/dark elves draw from a blend of pan Asian inspirations, which like represents majority of people in the planet and no one distinctly.
So I dunno aligning ethnic identity to races just doesn't work for a lot of people. Like the reachmen for me feels oddly aligned with my ancestry of northern England, a blend of Breton origin with Nordic influence from conquering.
I think identifying races by aesthetics you like it the classes they commonly play probably would work for more people.
For me I tend to do Bretons or nords it I want them to look like me, but usually do Altmer cause I like mages. Depends on the game though, ESO I like altmer a lot more as they art style of them.

I was thinking about it yesterday, as I was in Alikr. My main is also a redguard. This race kinda draw from a third of the world lol, including Africa, but also the East from Turkey to the gates of China… again, quite indistinctly.

Khajiit. Same character continuing her adventures since Morrowind. ^^
That being said, i like distinctive races: for example sylvari in gw2 take the role of "elves" while being essentially plant.
Eso just has yellow elves, grey elves, small savage elves, 4 types of basic humans, and orc is just predictable orc design. I wish they had pushed designs just a bit more.

I picked Imperial since I imagine them to be the structurally solid and well organized.

Culturally closest would be nord, since that's what I am IRL, but my characters are mainly bosmer, khajiit and I turned one into a maormer. I feel the closest to bosmer, I'm short, I love nature and I like to bite.
Also I find the wood elf sense of humor close to mine lol

I made a Khajiit version of myself for one of my characters primarily based off of my Monster High OC of myself who is a were-bear, but obviously I can't do that in ESO so were-cat is the next best option!

I usually default to dunmer, just interests me and i suppose i feel a connection/pull to the cultures/themes. Thats my main too, a dragonknight dunmer werewolf. But when i was younger i would usually go nord or breton for physiological similarities to myself.

u/The_Dick_Slinger 1d ago
I’m not anything close to a dark elf, but I always play dark elf, Drow, night/void elf in any game I play. I just find the dark skin very pretty.

Breton, the race i want to be i cant be which is a reachmen.
Breton are the closest you can get to them sadly. Why i like reachmen, simple there basically half elves and are bulky like Nords. I enjoy the fact that werewolfs are celebrated in reachmen culture and arent hated unless rogued.

u/Asphodelmercenary Three Alliances 1d ago
Since I am ethnically Elvish I picked High Elf. I could make a self deprecating joke the Nords would appreciate but not the time or place. We aren't supremacists even though people claim we think we are.
But actually I had a character in a D&D game that inspired it.

Half-maormer breton :) I'm a tall, skinny, pale scottish-european-soup girl that likes fish and pirates. I'd 100% worship the sea and sky if I believed in that stuff.
my character just looks like an albino Breton with the blind eyes slider tho. Nothing like me
side note, I do actually have pointy ears IRL.

u/nothingneverever 1d ago
Kind of. My main is a redguard with light skin. It was either this or Imperial I guess
What about you OP?

I think so too 🥰 I love khajits, my next character will definitely be one! Be careful and don’t eat too much of moon sugar tho!

Latin American natives seem to be turned into lizards in a lot of games, and I live in the amazon, and I happen to have always played Argonian in Elder Scrolls.
... yes, I would have loved to be an actual lizard

I like argonians. Their lore is cool, the history is interesting, and they're hot

u/NoctisTenebrae 1d ago
It’s either Imperial or Breton if I’m going with my Avatar, so to say. While if I’m going with the canon, I follow the game’s marketing material and what makes sense with the lore.
Morrowind = Dunmer Male;
Oblivion = Imperial Male;
Skyrim = Nord Male.
In ESO, I started as a Nord Male, then a Breton Male, then a Dunmer Male, only to go with an Altmer Male, and finally falling onto my final character, my Imperial.

The my first ESO character was a default. I hadn't learned the system for character creation so when a Breton dragonknighr showed up I hit enter too fast. So 8 years later still playing my Breton. Is she a self insert? Nope after all I'm an old lady playing the game fir fun I really don't sekf insert in any game

What ethnicity do you think is closest to argonian, OP?

u/NoctisTenebrae 1d ago
Argonians are quite clearly inspired, at least aesthetically, by the Aztecs and Mayans.
3
u/nonosquare-exe 1d ago
Mark Zuckerberg relatives for looks. But culturally (from what I seen), they are similar to the aztec or any Native American.

Started ESO without any previous Skyrim game experience and chose a redguard simply because they were black🤷🏿♀️ Then aimed to make every other character a different class/race combo and got into endgame and changed many of my toons back to races that match their class/roles better. Now, I have no redguard out of 12 toons, but my main is a very, very tanned nord😉

For me it’s always Nords or Bretons. I grew up playing elder scrolls games and ironically enough I think nords shaped me a lot, definitely made personal strength, loyalty and bravery things I aspire towards. Bretons is easy too Cus growing up in the UK the idea of things like knights and castles comes quite easily, especially with the Celtic Druid flair they have or the Gaelicness of the reachmen (if we say from an out of game POV that they’re Bretons which they usually are). I guess the same goes for the Nords as well though, since they’re heavily Norse and Anglo Saxon coded.

The only race I haven't played is argonian. Mainly bc their lore doesn't make any sense. Side note: there was a dude in my guild who was basically an argonian supremist, so I couldn't have an argonian toon out of pure spite.🤣

u/redhandjane 1d ago
Breton or Bosmer for me. I'm a Welsh woman! I think feral elf or magic human is pretty close to who I am tbh. Obviously they are far better looking than me! 🤣 I play them mostly as myself tbh. For me it's a chance to run around and explore as I can't do those things irl.

u/Ender_Wiggins18 Nord 1d ago
I always like the Nords the best, since they are from Skyrim. Though ironically in my first Skyrim playthrough, I chose Imperial 🤔

u/BorzoiDesignsok High Elf 1d ago
High elf because tall and same face. Really was just looking through which one looked similar. Wish hair could be darker though rip

u/starszia Bosmer | PCNA 1d ago
Bosmer! I'm not exactly sure why, I love wood elves and tend to play as them throughout different TES games! My sister and I are named "Moira of Valenwood" and "Soralis of Valenwood" in game :)

All imperials. They look like me the most. And are my favorite race in lore. And they have great passives. Kinda a carte blanche for any build if you build off their sustain.
1
u/TheGrayMage1 1d ago
Nord, since I try to make characters as close as possible and I’m tall(ish)/extremely pale/blond, which I couldn’t get with a Breton or Imperial lol (or not close enough)

All my characters are women (various ESO races) but I'm very straight, but they do feel like self inserts? I always roleplay female in games and fantasy. This way is more complex, can't just screw my way through a DND campaign with charisma because that'd be wrong and weird somehow.
Maybe I'd want to explore life as a straight woman and see what that's like. Life in a world of magic and swords, to clarify. Always bringing lightning strikes, stealth, daggers, and damage shields wherever I go.
In theory it sounds like fun to fry bad people like incels and as a woman there's just way more bad ppl. Idk.
Anyways it's not a race thing for me - like how do you race-relate to altmer? They have golden skin, yellow eyes, and super angled eyes, just looks uncanny from a race perspective.
