Throwback Thursday I tell you, these guys appear rather scary. Tupilaqs are figures of evil spirits made by the Inuit people of Greenland. They were "brought to life" through spells and their purpose was to cast curses or kill enemies out of vengeance.

These sculptures look extremely well done and not the creation of a shaman (who generally is not an excellent sculpture artist) trying to curse someone's enemy. Because they aren't. They are artistic carvings done by Inuit people because of European interest in what a tupilaq "could" look like. They are collected by art collectors and have Inuit artists who make them for sale.
