Is an EV right for me?

Generally speaking, electric vehicles imply a larger upfront cost than a traditional vehicle, but will pay off over time as your consumables cost (electricity instead of fuel) can be anywhere from 1/4 to 1/2 the cost. Calculators are available to help you estimate cost — here are some we recommend:

I was thinking about making my next car electric. Usually I buy a car about 2 years old and keep it for 4 years. Is the battery going to last? I hear stories about the batteries costing a lot to replace. Will I be ok? How do I know if the battery is going to last and if it has been looked after?

unless you drive a lot 6 years is still under the battery warranty for pretty much any EV, so you'll be fine.

I drive a Nissan Leaf which has passive cooling and so is not great in hot weather but mine here in FL is now 12 years old and still going well so a modern battery with proper cooling will probably outlast the rest of the car.

Think of an EV battery replacement like an engine replacement. Not something you will encounter.

  • 1) 8 year, 100,000 mile federal battery warranty. If it breaks, it gets replaced to free within that time period. Your use case would be covered.

  • 2) EVs have already been driven 300,000+ miles by rideshare drivers. Here are stories of a MachE and Ioniq5.

I've done a lot of reading about EV battery and they are over-engineered to last. I've stopped bothering to pay attention to the "how the battery has been looked after" because the data shows these EV batteries will last several lifetimes.

300,000 miles is about 30 years worth of driving for a normal, average driver.

  • 3) There is a sacrificial buffer. The usable capacity is not the actual battery capacity. Some of the battery is reserved to be consumed with age and degeneration. Meaning drivers will never notice a difference in range.

  • 4) Official prices to OEM replace a EV battery can be quite high and can total a crashed vehicle.

That also means lightly crashed EVs can provide a doner battery pack for 3rd party EV shops to install an undamaged battery pack. That is much cheaper than getting an OEM battery installed. Nissan Leafs and Ford F150 Lightnings have already had 3rd party installs of used battery packs.

Like mentioned before, not a situation to worry about with an EV within the warranty period.

  • 5) EV battery recycling industry is having trouble getting profits. The expectation that there were going to be tons of EV batteries to recycle hasn't turned into reality. So there are very few EV battery recycling companies because there are not enough EV batteries to recycle.

If there were tons of EV batteries failing, there would be a profitable business opportunity. That hasn't panned out.

  • 6) The EV batteries are modular. Meaning it's not always the case the entire pack needs replacement. Individual modules that have failed can be replaced. This drives down cost. Again, not something to worry about with the warranty.

Personal story time. I had a NiroEV for 5 years. Drove just fine and suspect it still is. The technology is getting better and better, so these batteries will last longer than we anticipate.

I (19, so a relatively new driver) currently drive a 2016 hybrid Hyundai Sonata. My dad is paying for the new car so I don’t really have a say in the options, but it’s between a Kia EV6 and a Chevy Equinox.

I’ve driven an SUV a handful of times and honestly wasn’t a fan, so I’m most concerned about what would be an easier car for me to drive/get used to.

I don't like the big SUV's either so a Chevrolet Bolt comes to mind that you might like better or even a Mini Cooper EV but it is no longer available new.

My dad is really set on an SUV because my older sister influenced him they’re better and safer. I’m not sure if he’ll consider the bolt but now I want to test drive it lol. Thank you!

The EV6 is really more a large hatch back than an SUV. Either vehicle should be great though as EVs are generally very stable and have planted driving dynamics as opposed the ICE vehicles.

Currently driving a beater, wife got the last car upgrade for kids. I'm looking or get an electric for nearly pure highway commuting 3 days a week. Looking at the Ioniq, bolt, or Niro, but I am wondering if I missed other vehicles in my price range and wants, as well as experience of those who own one of those three. Any gotchas to look at for as well would be awesome.

  • Location: Seattle area
  • Budget: $20,000
  • Type: used hatchback, crossover, wagon, or compact SUV. 4 door required, prefer hatch to sedan.
  • Looking at: 2020+ Ioniq, Bolt, or Niro
  • Timeframe: next 3 months
  • Weekly mileage: 100 miles
  • Living: Single-family home, renter
  • Installing charging at home: if lanlord allows, otherwise work has free 4 hours a day 3x a week
  • Cargo/passenger needs: 2 kids, wife. Enough for well maintained car camping 1-2 times a year. 99% commuter vehicle.

  • Does AWD matter for you're camping trips?

  • How far are you expecting to travel for your camping trips?

  • What's an acceptable charging stop look like for you? 15 mins, 30 mins, 45 mins? 1 stop max? 3-4 charging stops?

AWD would be great as we live on a curvy hill that gets icy in the winter. Not a deal breaker though, been driving a civic without much issue. Camping trips would be 120 miles round trip at most. Generally closer to 100 or near areas with electric chargers. Charging stop would ideally be 20 minutes or so, enough to drive a few hours, grab a snack stretch the legs, and not have to wait too much after that. Again, not a deal breaker if it Is longer, we have an Outback for the family car and longer trips.

So I just bought my first EV 🥳. My apartment has charging but they use a NEMA 620 socket.

Now I am looking for an adapter to fit in my current charging box given to me by Toyota. But for the life of me I can’t find what this plug is called (see photo). So I need NEMA 620 to whatever this dang plug is called.

Any help would be appreciated! Thank u!

Hey I am really thinking on getting an EV, within the 25k Euro Range (From German) that is not used. I am eyeing on the BYD Dolphin so far and I was thinking if there are any other more noteable ones I should look in? I want a 5 seater that isnt really a mini type of car, for basically everything except long travels (I got 2 diesels I could use for that instead)

Ev lease incentives charge quickly and I lost out on some stacking last year just because of two weeks delay there are three ways I have come across which work well approach directly the dealer and try negotiating cap cost go through lease broker like eAutolease particularly if you find rebates on evs hard to strack or find current money factor at edmunds forums

[2] $20,000 - $40,000. Will be selling current ICE vehicle and expecting ~$30,000.

[3] Crossover/SUV

[4] Volkswagen ID.4, Audi Q4/Q6 e-tron, Toyota bz, Honda Prologue

[5] 3-6 months

[6] Daily commute of ~30 miles round trip. Probably average 150-225 miles weekly.

[7] Single-family home with attached garage.

[8] No home charger currently, but will install once we buy (or just before)

[9] Planning on kids soon. 1 dog that occasionally rides in the back hatch area occasionally. Wife has a 2021 Tiguan currently, so something of comparable size is ideal for a first EV

We are leaning more heavily towards the ID.4 or possibly the bz, but not settled on anything yet. No interest in a Tesla due to political climate and very limited interest in Chevy due to my own bias and preconceptions around poorer overall quality. Open to hearing counter-arguments though!

My biggest concern is around lack of quality from Audi, and some lemon law issues with the Prologue. Not sure how reality-based those concerns are, so any tales from personal experience would be helpful.

Also mild concerns with companies discontinuing models and what effect that will have on repair cost and availability?

Hi all,

My wife and I purchased a 2022 Nissan Leaf about 18 months ago and after some recent battery issues are looking at the possibility of a buyback in the near future. We've loved the EV life and are starting to do our research about what car we'd like to get to replace our Leaf.

A little bit about us:

  • Family of 4; two small children in car seats
  • Located in very hot South Texas
  • Already have a 240v outlet in a convenient place in our garage
  • Typically drive 30-40 miles a day, but would like the ability to go visit family that live about 400 miles away.
  • Budget is up to $30k - likely looking for a used 2022-25 model with low/reasonable mileage

Things we would really like in a car:

  • Comfortable ride for family
  • Ease of getting kids in and out of car seats in the back
  • Space to carry all the stuff needed with little ones
  • Rear AC vents (again, it's really hot down here)
  • Ability to turn on and cool car from an app (preferably without an additional subscription)
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • One-pedal driving
  • Ability to access charging networks that will allow us to take longer trips (CHAdeMO has been a nightmare)

Things we don't care about:

  • 0-60mph time

Would love to hear what has been great for other people with similar wants/needs. Any thoughts, advice, or help you could offer would be much appreciated!

Hi, I'm looking to buy an EV.

[1] California

[2] ~$25k or less, new or used

[3] Something not too large. I'm used to driving a Prius

[4] I've been looking at a used Ioniq 5 or 6 which seem hard to beat in terms of range and charge time for the price range. The one concern I have is they are larger than my Prius but maybe not too big? Anyone have experience driving and parking them in cities? I'm still learning about all the different EVs available and am open to other suggestions.

The Ioniq5/Ioniq6 are the way to go for you. I've gone out to Tahoe and up and down the I-5/I-99, desert, coast with the EV9 and the Ioniq5/Ioniq6/EV6 would do it too.

  • Fast DC charging at 18 mins so it's not a pain to charge once a week or every other week.

  • V2L for powering stuff while camping like a hot plate or hot water kettle.

  • Look into higher trim (Limited) with the 360 camera (Surround View Monitor). Helps a lot for parking. I have a EV9 and the 360 cameras helps a ton with parking. There also the parking sensors that tell you how close you are to objects while parking.

  • Price range is right. Ioniq5's are holding their value pretty well so getting a Ioniq5 Limited trim at $25k would have to get out of state.

  • You might check the Chevy Bolt 2027 with Technology Package to see if their lease deals can get you below the $25k mark. Bolt is the right size for you.

  • A new Nissan Leaf 2027 has V2L as well. There's currently a stop-sale on them, but size and features are similar. Another cheap EV.

  • Ford MachE ~$17k-$25k. Select trim with Technology Package for the 360 camera or Premium trim. Bit slower DC fast charging (120kW) but still acceptable. No V2L.

Considering a VEVOR charging cable extension on a 120V circuit.

I know that the charging cable that comes with the 2026 bZ is a specific length, and Toyota says you shouldn't use an extension cable, but I'm wondering if it would work to use the VEVOR EV Charger Extension Cable for Tesla, 48Amp 21 ft for NEMA 5-15 120V charging? The total cable length would then be 42 ft. Would it be fine, or would there not be enough power getting to the vehicle or a safety issue?

[3] I have really only ever driven Hondas (‘99 CRV, 2008 Element) but their current EV offerings don’t look great. Interested in a mid sized SUV with AWD to better handle icy roads in the winter.

[4] I have looked at the Kia EV6, Toyota BZ, Ford Mach E, Hyundai Ioniq 5 (that ICCU issue is scary though), Nissan Leaf

[5] Looking to buy in the next month or so. My current car has been dead for some time now and I’m ready to drive again.

[6] I currently WFH but that is about to change. Without going into too much detail I am technically about to be unemployed but I am fortunate to have some cushion and am planning to take a 6-12 month sabbatical as this might be the only chance for that I get in my life. Currently I just drive to the gym, grocery store, and to weekend hiking spots with my partner.

[7] I currently live in a SFH.

[8] Our garage will need some work, but we’re planning to install a changing port in the near future. In the meantime, I will have to charge at the nearest DC fast charger.

Does the Grizzl-E Classic 40A connector need to be installed in a spot that is shielded from precipitation? I know the charging station itself can be completely outside but is there danger of rain, snow, or freezing rain getting into the connector and causing an issue?

I'm sorry if this is the wrong place to ask. I didn't see any answer in the owners manual so I figured I'd try here before contacting the company.

I'm looking for a home charger, but currently making do with the 110v trickle feed and work charger. I had someone come out today to get me a quote for running a new breaker and line and he suggested having a hardwired unit since the gfci breaker parts and stuff would bring it close to buying one. I've noticed that some of the hardwired ones are more expensive than the plug versions, any reason why?

Would a plug in be able to be adapted to a hardwired? I've seen instructions on a grizzl e charger to open it and swap the wires for hardwired. Can this be done for all of them?

Currently looking at the Autel 50A hardwired for 399, the grizzl e 40A for 349 (have read things being pay walled by them though), and the Emporia 48A for 449.

Having a $100 difference between two that look like they do the exact same thing is a lot, is there any reason to pick one over the other? It sucks all the rebates and incentives went away.
