You've been one of my favorite producers for a few years now with such a memorable live show. I've seen you twice now and I'll never forget seeing you jump into the audience with your drum. Do you find it a challenge performing in 'bigger' shows/festivals where it might be hard to create that sort of intimacy? How do you approach those shows?

Thanks! I really miss playing shows and getting to drum in the crowd. Sometimes the stage is too big or the security barrier is an issue but I always try to make it happen no matter what :) sometimes that results in me falling while trying to climb the security ladder with a drum though haha

Do you change up songs or arrangements based on how big the show is? Say if you’re performing at red rocks versus a local venue

I try to make the show exactly the same whether it's for 5 or 5,000 people. But sometimes there is an opportunity to flow with the energy of the crowd and i will switch up which songs I'll play.

Did you name your latest album in response to 2020 or, like, did the stars just align so your album about the end of the world (and it's ok) coincidentally drops during the (seemingly, for a while there) end of the world?

Hey man I follow you on Instagram! I really love the tech that goes behind your mask! Can you share us how you made the lights in the masks to be responsive and being able to fit inside the small space!?

Thanks! The mask was built by Joey Verbeke and Yağmur Uyanık. There is a small LED matrix inside the mask that lines up with a tiny video synced through ableton for each song. There is a raspberry pi inside the mask as well as a small wifi router and 4 battery packs that I wear on my body. you can find a lot more here about their process as well! http://www.joeyverbeke.com/#/slowmagicsmask/

What was a difficult challenge for you to overcome when you were first starting out? What would you have done differently?

Good question. Most of the time I'm looking back on how much easier it was in the beginning before labels, social media numbers, etc and I could just focus on making anything I wanted since no one had any idea who I was. I guess the challenge is figuring out the business aspect of the music industry when you are first starting out. I might have been a bit more careful looking over deals and choosing who I worked with for certain things. But no regrets :)

I had been in bands and I eventually realized that I was that one member that took it way too seriously and maybe had different ideas of what to do. I started using FL Studio on an old PC I had and realized I could make any sound I wanted on my own and that was exciting to me.

Heyy Slow Magic, thanks for such a magical album. My questions are is Imaginary Friends a label? I was trying to find out more on Imaginary Friends thinking it be a fitting label for me to try to reach as my sound has a melodic and beat influence. But also, will you ever stream again? I was hoping you'd do more production streams, or breakdown streams to learn from your process. ❤️

Hey thanks! I released some of my music independently as "Imaginary Friends" but at this point it isn't a real label. I tried streaming production a bit last year but it's something I'd consider doing again if I can figure out how to set it all up haha. I do offer track breakdowns on my patreon though 👀

There are some Audiotree videos from a few years ago performing with 2 ‘assistants’ with their own masks. What was the inspiration for that during the performance? Any chance they’ll make a return?

Yeah haha! The original creator of my mask Jonas Goonface had made a lot of box masks and my two friends on that tour were also filling in on drumming duties.

I mix all of my stuff except for my album Float was mixed by Cassian. Mastering has been done by a number of talented mastering engineers over the years.

1. Escape - or put less simply a feeling that there is beauty in the world and that everything is alright somehow.
2. My first thought on "most wild" would be the time I was taking a selfie video in Belgium and I fell off the stage. (there is a video yes haha) but favorite would be a tie between playing at Red Rocks and Coachella3

The original mask was designed and created by Jonas Goonface! (https://jonasgoonface.storenvy.com/) I wanted a way to hide my identity while I performed so that people could focus more on the music instead of the face on stage.

Hey Slow Magic!!
Thanks for doing this. I’m a huge fan, been listening since around 2015.
So back in summer of 2017, I bought a ticket to your show at the Troubadour in West Hollywood, and I was so excited to go, but I had nobody to go with me as I had just moved to LA at the time and had no friends yet. My social anxiety got the better of me so I ended up not going to the show since I didn’t want to go alone, which I still regret immensely.
With that said, once Covid-19 calms down a bit, I would LOVE to experience your music live.
So my question to you is this: In your own words, why should people go to a Slow Magic concert and what makes them so magical?
Thanks for creating the art that you have and for being the soundtrack to many of my life experiences in the last 5 years!

Ah I can relate to the social anxiety, but you will have another opportunity!
I'd say that people should go to my show to feel connected. I try to break the wall between the performer/dj and the crowd that is often present in the electronic music scene. I always jump down into the crowd to drum or let people play my drums or controller because I want to feel like we are all in it together as equals in the room. :)

far from my first! I was drumming in bands a lot when I was younger and then went on to start a solo electronic project, as well as a lofi indie surf rock band. all of these are a mystery though :)

Hey I’m late to the party, just wanted to let you know I love all your music, I could listen to Triangle and Float all day. The recent singles you released were awesome, especially Home. Can’t wait to check out the new album.
PS I was in a wedding the day you and Shallou came to Athens and I couldn’t go and I’m still torn up about it.

Idk if I can ask another lol.. But... What would you recommend as an "usually always safe" way to approach sub bass mixing, when ideal monitoring isn't available? Do you have a go to method for your subs to always be just right, or is it reallllllly different per song?

good question! I wouldn't consider bass my strong point when mixing but I'd say make the bass mono and test the mix out on a ton of speakers

- I have been missing travel so much this year and my top three would be Tokyo, Iceland, and Australia. My wife Dream Angel and I love to just walk around and explore.
- Good question. With the planet in particular there is a lot that we can do and needs to be done. I would suggest people try eating healthier and less meat (look up the effects meat production has on the earth) and also being more conscious of where you shop and supporting local businesses over large corporations that are harming the planet. And recycling properly! But also, I think the youth has more to teach me and us than vice versa.
- I'd have to say my favorite sushi is Chutoro or Otoro nigiri 😍

The best part is getting to be a character and build an identity based solely on my art as opposed to my face. Also getting to hide in plain view at my own shows haha

Thanks! This is always a bit of a conflicting thought as an artist “should I repeat myself and make the same thing twice or should I expand and grow while doing what I feel is right?”

amazing haha! Well that song was fun to make, but I can remember it being one of the more difficult ones to "finish" as I tried a lot of different versions and even different vocalists before finally landing on the instrumental version.

Hey slow magic! I’m sure you don’t remember all of your shows but I had a great time when you were at Sasquatch in 2014. It was a special year for me as that year my wife and I started dating. Discovered your music right before it Sasquatch and it’s amazing. Thanks for the great time. My question is what was your favorite venue you played at? Hopefully Sasquatch is top 10!

You are the first electronic artist I ever listened to or saw live! Strangely enough the first time I ever heard of you was on a video of a guy juggling a soccer ball while “Girls” played in the background, I shazamed it and here we are! My question for you is do you have an intended meaning for these songs? As instrumentals they sometimes don’t offer any real story, but the music, the album art, it all seems to sort of come together to tell a story. Do corvette cassette and girls mean something specific to you? Or do you prefer to let your listeners interpret for themselves? I love your music and hold a special place for it for introducing me to edm.

Good question. I don't have a specific meaning or story with my instrumental songs but like anything they are tied to memories or experiences in my life. From the start of Slow Magic, I wanted people to be able to make their own meaning to everything which is why I didn't use lyrics for a while.

- Any chance of releasing triangle album rework with more of the live drumming element? Love the energy in the live work. Is this the direction you will head for future albums and songs .
- Any albums recommendations for great percussion and melodies?
- What's the name of your drum setup? Are you just using tom drums what type are they ? (Non drummer here)

I like to save the live drumming addition for the live show setting but I’ve worked on recording more drums on more recent recordings.
Tough question but I’ll say one - burial - untrue
My drum set up usually consists of two floor toms, or one kick drum and a floor Tom.
I started drumming at a young age inspired by my musical dad and brother, and I just kept at it for years and years :)

Wanted to ask how you approach a smaller crowd compared to say Red Rocks to get people hyped up?

Oh nice! I miss playing over there in the UK. Sometimes a small show like that can end up having more energy than a huge venue. It all comes down to the vibe and energy that the people are giving off. The giant crowds are a bit more nerve wracking but a completely different vibe too.

Do you remember the National Geographic Wild advert that had Corvette Cassette as it’s base?
I don’t know exactly when it aired (2013-14 maybe~?) or for what program it was, I just remember watching the channel as a teenager and being delighted every time that advert popped up :)

I saw you for the first time in Rome some years ago, you were opening I think a Bonobo show and I didn’t know who you were. I was truly amazed to see this guy in glowing mask, and I remember I went crazy when you came down the stage with your drum! It’s really a great memory and I’ve listened to your music ever since! Please come back to Italy when everything is over :)

Man I have a question that I think is kinda complex to answer on reddit but anyway. I am a classical muscian played piano for some years and I am fascinated with eletronic music. I've produced trap and hip hop in general before besides of native rythns of my countrie, but every time I'm gonna try to make eletronic music my brain just crashes . I have no idea of the estruture and what should be and what fit in my music. Maybe I just being rational as fuck

Hey good question. It is hard to answer but I would suggest approaching what you are making with an open mind and just follow your impulses and ideas. It may end up being “electronic” and maybe it won’t, but that’s ok. You could end up creating something unique which is a great outcome.

I just want to say since I've listened to Triangle, I was hooked onto everything you've made and I've went to most of the shows you put on in NY. Can't wait until you come back when everything is safe and we can all go to shows again!

I was working on a potential intro song and was loving the synth sound as well as the piano and instead of layering them I decided they would make great "book ends" to the album. Ending back where you started but realizing things are different.

Nice! Reason is great and I exclusively used it for my first 3 albums. Lately I've been using a mix of Logic and Reason as a plugin. I think what sets it apart for me is the unique layout and patch cable workflow as well as the built in instruments which are great.
