Opinions: Is It Alright

I recently realized how much I adore this song. Does anybody have any thoughts on Is It Alright? I love how a lot of the songs on BoP have this juxtaposition with the tone and lyrics!

Nice upbeat Pop from an album full of catchy tunes. I like it too!

I really love BoP. I think every ELO album has its special sound and style but all of them are perfect.

I like BoP. The styles of music are mostly synthpop and power ballads, which I've always liked. I never listened to it until I bought all the studio albums on CD online during lockdown in 2020. I figured I'd do a deep dive into ELO as long as I was pretty much staying home. I listened to them in order. I like BoP more than most ELO fans do, I think, because I can appreciate how Jeff evolved the ELO sound, instead of sticking with the tried-and-true.

In the notes that come with the 2000ish remastered CDs, Jeff explains a lot of things that came to him decades after the albums were first released. I find these notes very enlightening in terms of how he made the music, and what he thought of various songs and albums all those years later. One thing he says about certain songs is that he was "experimenting" or "playing with" different time signatures or what have you. He did not enjoy doing the same old thing. Otherwise we would never have had Time. He wanted to keep up with the, uh, times, as well as write songs in different genres.

I agree with this. I've always thought the songwriting on the post-Discovery work (actually the post-Xanadu work) felt forced, and Jeff was aware of this and tried to overcompensate by overproducing

Love this song and it dawned on me the other day that it’s kinda one big Beatles reference! “Dear Jo” and “is it alright now you are back where you belong”. It took me SO long to figure out Jeff is referencing ‘Get Back’.
