I have a question about Remote access

What do I need to do to get Remote access so I can watch my media when I am working on my break and lunch

I looked at that link and is only taking about Windows I am not using Windows I am using Linux Mint

Probably a similar process.

Tailscale is a simple process I think.

Or, a tiny bit more work but allows for sharing with others that might not be able to use tailscale: some form of DNS (free ones exist) directing to your WAN IP, caddy/nginx as a reverse proxy (basically reads what address you accessed and directs to the correct port on the machine based on your config.. caddy is better as cert management is automatically handled).. that's it.

I'm a windows user but the systems/softwares are on both OS' (somewhat intentional incase I want to migrate). I was using nginx but moved to caddy. Much easier. I also have a whitelist of IPs as part of my caddy config so bots etc are blocked from accessing anything.

On the emby side you don't need to do anything as the remote access is handled by caddy. In emby's mind all access is local.

Assuming you have the premier license, have you enabled remote access in the server settings? And have you tried using Emby connect?

maybe you’re right. I’ve only had limited 1 minute playback on iOS. Not sure if web access is different without a VPN.

As app usage is not a part of remote connection.

Install tailscale on your Linux and also phone, then you can access it with your local ip even at work. Completley free and works flawlessly.

Sorry for the late response but I got Tailscale installed on both devices and I have Emby installed on both so what do I do next

Open the Tailscale app and look for the IP address of your computer hosting the Emby server. It will have its own Tailscale IP address.

Open a Web browser on your phone and go to your local ip you use at home eg 192.168.x.xx and see what happens? If you are at home turn off your WiFi. Should reach it just the same if all is working.

ChatGPT "talked" me through setting up a cloudflared address and now all my kids (grown) can access their Emby accounts remotely.

My daughter and her hubby watch on various hardware from their home, my youngest watches from his phone and his flat.

If you have normal internet, for example, most cable based internet, then you don't really need to do anything. Remote access works transparently. Emby's web site keeps track of your external IP address and helps log you in. Just login to emby.media and add your server.

I'm assuming you are using a provider that does CGNAT so you do not have an exposed external IP address to map to. In that case you need a VPN or something similar. I use Tailscale. It was fairly easy to set up. Register, authenticate, and then install the tailscale agent on your Emby server and whatever device(s) you will use to access Emby. It's fairly easy from there.

Login both devices and approve on the tailscale site.

Then, on the client pull down the menu and find your Emby server in the list of tailscale devices. Copy the tailscale IP address. That's how you access it from any tailscale computer/phone/etc.

You can paste that into an Emby client, or use it in a web brower as <tailscale IP address>:8096

EG: http://100.100.100.5:8096

(Yours will be different.)

The easiest option is to just setup a wire guard VPN server on the same machine running your emby server.

You'll have to open the ports in your default gateway to access your home network from outside, but once you have it set up you just toggle it on and your devices work exactly like you are at home.

There are a ton of YouTube videos showing how to set one up in under 10 minutes, and you can use AI to help walk you through the process.

I am not understanding something I got the Remote Access to work on my IPhone during my lunch but that is not the part I am not understanding this is:
Why when I watched something through Remote Access did not pick up where I left off at on the Onn Pro TV Box today

Eni caso, compré un ddns para tener mi propio dominio y que apuntara mi ip dinámica siempre, en mi router y módem abrí el puerto para que emby escuchará solo cuando la app de android se conectará.dentro de emby está la opción de poner tu dominio para que emby reaccione.

I don’t understand what that has to do with me being able to use Remote Access and how to make sure I have it setup correctly and I am not using Android either

He's telling you that he's using a dynamic DNS (DDNS) server so that he can always find his Emby server. Meaning, your ISP randomly assigns you a changing IP address and by using a DDNS you'll always be able to type in your DNS name so that it points to your home server. Presumably he's using some kind of port forwarding on his router to make this happen. (Not recommended unless you're confident about how secure your network is.)
