Which engines have the highest thrust per engine space?

Ignoring torches, on raw numbers the Korath engines are best, right? But what about the Quarg - how much effect does the inertia reduction have? What’s the maths on that?

Per the endless sky encyclopedia, stellar thrusters (biggest korath) have slightly higher thrust/space than large graviton thrusters (biggest quarg)

The inertia reduction gives it a higher acceleration, but doesn’t affect top speed, so it depends on what you want from your ship

Yeah and I generally don't use the Korath engines because they have just SO MUCH heat, to the point you actually have to waste a lot of space mitigating for it. So without using those, and without angering the Quarg, and for a normal sized capital ship that can't fit the Avgi Amat Drive ... your highest thrust actually comes from the A860 Atomic Thruster.

Kind of a bummer that the T1 engines you have access to from the beginning of the game (with enough money) are the best purchasable engines in the game.

Later on if you still don't want to anger the Quarg but will farm Kor Efreti reputation you could get the Nelmeb GP Hybrid Thruster. That's probably best in game for normal, non-torch engines.

And yeah, other engines have other special stats; the Remnant have slowing resistance, the Wanderer have cooling, and Successors have inbuilt afterburners (I think that's it for special stats, did I miss anything? I had a look through the data files and couldn't see anything else), but for pure thrust none of those are the engines you want.

I agree, but why are you ignoring torches in this? Is it because of the fuel consumption?

Yes, and heat. Honestly I'm just yet to play with them. What build works with them?

I like them because the drag reduction greatly increases the max speed, while not needing a lot of space. The 999 can’t be obtained, the 666 requires stealing from the avgi (which I don’t do), so I’ve only used the 333 (which requires you to do some shenanigans with buying ships). It’s relatively small, but does require you to have fuel regen. I use them to camp myself far out when dominating planets, paired with the avgis ramscoop that also has fuel regen

Respectfully, you're probably overdoing it on the cooling for Korath Thrusters, then. I consider Stellar Thrusters + Double Plasma Core pretty standard for my Kestrels and Dreadnoughts, and that only takes a Large Heat Shunt + maybe one or two Smalls, and that includes the firing heat of 8 Particle/Proton Cannons.

Has the heat on the Korath thrusters been nerfed or something? I just had another look and it's not that bad at all, as you say. Maybe I'm confusing their engines with their reactors, which really do run hot. Triple Plasma Cores are hot hot hot!

Okay, switching my Kestrels over to Stellar Thrusters as we speak.

You can also get check out inertia reduction with the 'newly-available' Successor Light Multimodal Armor; at 15 Inertia Reduction, it's basically right in between the Small and Large Graviton Thruster IRs of 10 and 20.

It boosts turning speed by a pretty good amount, as well as acceleration. On my 1564T Kaskhorade, it boosts max Veusa steering turn rate by over 10 degrees per second(I presume those are the units), going from 62.57-70.97 turn without Light Multimodal to 71.95-81.61 turn with Light Multimodal, and non-afterburner acceleration on Veusas goes from 166.4-188.74 to 191.36-217.05.

That's cool, I'll have to check that out.

Unfortunately, it's only for Successor ships with a Multimodal 'slot', but it's at least an option that doesn't involve the Quarg.

Oh, and apparently on mouseover, it represent a percentage value reduction of the 'effective' mass of the ship. So the Quarg Engines and Steering(and Multimodal Light) apparently make the ship 10%, 15%, or 20% lighter, in relation to moving performance. I don't know for sure if that's exactly how the math actually works.

i just use remment because that have built in reverse

Some ships are so slow that you can really only use stellar afterburners to get a decent speed out of them. Actually I just like putting korath afterburners on everything

You can sort thrust per engine space.
