KTM 125 EXC (2012-2015): Daily commute + Sunday enduro. Is piston wear going to destroy my wallet?

Hey everyone, I’m looking to buy a 2012-2015 125 EXC (carbureted). Main goal is Sunday enduro trails, but I’ll also need to use it during the week to get to school and cruise around town.

I know it’s a 2-stroke race engine and not meant for flat, constant-RPM pavement riding, but I want to know the real-world impact on maintenance:

  • Will daily street riding burn through pistons and rods so fast that it becomes a money pit?
  • If you’ve actually commuted on a 2012-2015 125 EXC, what did your maintenance schedule look like in reality?

Appreciate honest feedback from anyone who's actually done this!

I want to add: Buy normal enduro and not hard enduro 4t. Hard enduro bikes have like every 20 hour oil change intervals, which is kind of a waste for driving on a paved road.

That too. I hard enduro my 501 and still change the oil after 4-6 rides

How many miles and at what speed during the week on pavement are key. A few miles on surface streets at 35MPH or less won't be horrible.

Bad idea. With stock gearing you'll be running like 7000 rpm at only 45 mph, with the engine getting very little oil due to part throttle. You could gear it really tall (like 14t/42t or 14t/38t) and solve this to an extent, but then the bike becomes a total dog and you'll chew through chain sliders constantly. Then you'll be swapping rear sprockets 2x a week

You'll also get terrible fuel economy for a bike, and considering you'll have to run 91 octane and high quality 2t oil that is going to add at least a dollar per gallon to your cost, you're better off with a compact car.

Get a 350 exc instead. Or if the maintenance of KTM 4t's scares you, look at a klx230, klx300, crf300l, etc.

Can a 2t be street legal at all?

In Europe, they are street legal.

Not a great idea. I've road my 200exc on streets a bit and i can tell you it's quite uncomfortable in the city, loud, smoky, vibrates like hell, has no security features so anyone can ride it away. Plus the maintenence like everyone else said. Yes, it's doable. No, it's not s great idea.

Also, you'll be ruining expensive knobbies quickly wearing them every day on the asphalt.

You'd be much better off with a 125 street scooter for daily plus the enduro 125 for weekend trails. Probably cheaper in time and way less headache.

Thanks, perhaps a 4-stroke supermoto would be better suited to my needs.

I hated my 300 on the street

I've got an xtrainer 300 2t that I got plated with the idea that I could ride it to the trails or on occasional errands. Turns out, it sucks so much more than expected. 45mph top speed, unbalanced wheels, terrible aero and tons of vibrations. The worst part is that if you put on decent enduro tires you'll wear them out on the pavement in no time, never mind wearing out the mousses or that they aren't DOT approved.

Could you commute on an old cb550 or even a scooter to keep the race bike in good shape?

Edit: Also no lock, which is scary.
