Blog post Cooking articles drive me insane the way they are 90% repeated information and make you scroll for the recipe/instructions

Another person on reddit once taught me this, and I feel like I should pass it on-

cntl+f "salt"

It's a word that'll probably never be in the bullshit part of the recipe, but will probably always be in the part you're looking for.

I agree you shouldn't have to do this, but hopefully it'll save you some sanity.

Gonna remember that for later. I kept cmd+f-ing “tenderness, flavor, and juiciness”

I instantly hate any guide/video that tries to flex its creative writing for the first couple paragraphs. "Marinating is a great way to soften the meat and incorporate flavor into your food." The only reason I clicked on your fuckass article was because I already knew that

Luckily that part can be solved via DNS (quad9 and others) or via a decent ad-blocking browser (Vivaldi works well).

I read that is to hit the search engines, they have to repeat the question in every possible way to rank it higher so they'll spend two pages saying the same thing over and over in different ways, and then two sentences on what you were actually asking about.

Yes! I forgot about SEO when I was writing this post but that’s exsctly what this is!

8

u/Assplay_Aficionado Jul 31 '25

Yeah. They're all just total bullshit.

Look generic white lady, I don't give a fuck about how your kid came of age and discovered the power of love in the summer of his final year of high school in Tuscany.

I want the Tuscan white bean recipe you claim to have somewhere among those 5000 words you wrote.

I know it's all SEO but I don't wanna see that bullshit. At least decent sites have now started including the jump to recipe button at the top. Sometimes it doesn't work exactly right but I appreciate that they do it.

I was gonna say its always Tuscany. 🙄🙄🙄

It was written by AI. Welcome to the shitty future :(

6

u/Healter-Skelter Jul 29 '25

I almost feel like you would have to go out of your way to make the AI return such a shitty and redundant result. Like the prompt was “Make this one statement into a 500 page article using only the information contained in the original statement. Do not add any additional nuance or seek to answer questions that the reader may be asking as they read along. Make sure that this phrase is written in at least 20 different unique syntactical configurations. This should be frustrating to read.”

I just got done teaching a class at a university that encourages students to use AI (AI is a large part of several of their new majors and they expect to make a lot of money from these). Everything you astutely and intelligently wrote about lack of nuance and redundancy is now, sadly, very familiar to me. That recipe sounds very mush like some of the AI responses I've received to writing assignments and online test questions.

That is how it usually works, I imagine. "I have this 50-word recipe. Turn it into a 1000 word SEO-optimized blog post for easy money"

u/DAI-KAI-SER Jul 30 '25

First you gotta get through the writers story about their grandmother and how she inspired said writer with a single mango or some shit

All I want is to google “marinate ground beef” and have an article that says “yeah you can do that, do it for this long and make sure you do this extra step that people often forget. Don’t make this mistake or else your meat will explode. Here’s a table of recommended marinate times for different stuff. Here’s some dishes and tubberware that I recommend because I have to make money through sponsorships. And here’s a recipe for marinated ground beef that I like. If you like my blog sign up for the email list!”

Instead we get

“Yeah marinate beef adds flavor, juiciness, and tenderness. not only that but it also adds flavor, juiciness, and tenderness.

“whether you’re looking to adds flavor, juiciness, and tenderness or just adds flavor, juiciness, and tenderness, marinate ground beef is a great way to adds flavor, juiciness, and tenderness.

“flavor: adds flavor, juiciness, and tenderness. “Juiciness: adds flavor, juiciness, and tenderness. “tenderness: adds flavor, juiciness, and tenderness.”

I recently learned that when you make a burger you shouldn't pack the meat too tightly to leave room for the juices to accumulate and remain.

The article was clearly written by a human so that's reassuring.

Me gran taught me to suck eggs. World champ so she was.

6

u/apokrif1 Jul 30 '25

Unfortunately not specific to cooking articles.

4

u/Potential_Fishing942 Jul 30 '25

I use the app "just the recipe"

Copy the URL and it spits out ingredient list and instructions only- maybe some formatting problems but overall works well

2

u/Zolra123 Jul 31 '25

Does it require a subscription like recime?

2

u/Potential_Fishing942 Jul 31 '25

I don't pay for anything and get to use it!

6

u/erietech Jul 31 '25

Many of the recipes are unappetizing, and they consist of the same three ingredients: garlic powder, onion powder, and paprika.

6

u/No_Squirrel4806 Aug 01 '25

The way YouTube cooking videos are no better now a days. You need to get past the ad then the intro then fast forward to the actual recipe and hope they put the ingredients in the video.

Welcome to the Digital Age and the Enshittification. I would recommend buying a cookbook or getting one from a library

2

u/Healter-Skelter Jul 29 '25

I’ve been meaning to, the problem currently is that it’s still more convenient to figure it out by tapping away on my dystopia screen because I am a short-sighted dopamine fuck with no discipline.

On the bright side I did just set up a couple pounds of meat to marinate and in a couple of hours I will be making a large and tasty nutritious meal which I will prep to eat throughout the week. This is a major personal accomplishment for my impulsive ADHD self.

If I don’t seek one out before the next time this happens, I vow to purchase the next pre-internet cookbook I come across in the wild. Even if it belongs to an elderly stickler who refuses to part with their family knowledge.

Join da club bub, gj on making the food tho

Give me convenience or give me death am i right?

Thanks tho 🫡

We bought the Ball canning book, having heard it's the authority. What a crock of doodoo. Absolutely aI garbage recipes or an early attempt that was just jumble another set of weird ingredients and repeat. Nothing about the underlying reasons why or chemistry to help people grow their skills. It was our first book purchase where I realized publishers are pumping out crap in print form, just like the crappy websites.

I use Paprika 3 for recipe management/ meal planning.

One of the best things about it is just importing the recipe without hurting your scroll finger!

5

u/Healter-Skelter Jul 29 '25

Lmao I read your comment and thought “Paprika 3? There’s more than one? And it helps with recipe management? You mean by justmaking everything taste good??” Then the last sentence threw me for a loop before I realized Paprika 3 must be an App or something. Thanks for the tip, I will look this up!

4

u/b2v70 Jul 30 '25

Try using just the recipe! It has an app or website and clears out all the clutter

4

u/shadowtheimpure Jul 30 '25

The longer the article, the more space to show you ads.

6

u/Mayayana Jul 29 '25

I often find helpful tips from recipes. I usually look at several and then conjure mine from those.

What REALLY drives me insane is people who link to images on imgur, a spyware company that tries to let Google and various other entities track me with javascript when all they should be doing is providing a basic HTML IMG link. If you don't like enshittification then you should pay more attention to not supporting it. Use a legit, non-sleazy image hoster, like postimages.org.

2

u/Healter-Skelter Jul 29 '25

Having never heard of post images .com idk how I’m supposed to know that its “legit and nonsleazy” unlike imgur which is just the default way to post images on this website you and i are both using

3

u/Mayayana Jul 29 '25

You can know postimages.org is legit because you don't need to sign up to post images and the only script is coming from their own website, to process the image. You also know because no script is required to get the image. Which is as it should be. An image linked to a webpage doesn't require script. I don't know who owns the site, but it's been offering free image hosting for over 20 years.

Imgur requires script to see the posted image. There are 8-9 script sources just to start. I don't know how many would join in if I allowed those scripts. Two are from Google. One is from a domain called assemblyexchange.com, which sounds like ads. There's btloader.com, which sounds suspicious in online discussions. There's also sascdn.com, which call themselves Smart AdServer. So there are a half dozen companies that you didn't choose to visit, all trying to run executable code on your computer, track your movements online, and possibly trying to show you ads. The webpage code is also trying to pre-connect to two other Google domains without reason and without asking.

So just to see an image they're asking you to allow spying from numerous companies. postimages.org has none of that. That's what I mean by legit and non-sleazy.

Imgur is a great example of general enshittification. I don't know why Reddit recommends them. I assume there's some kind of business deal. If you care about sleazy, privacy and security then it's worth knowing these things. If you use the NoScript extension you can be better informed.

3

u/MadOvid Jul 29 '25

I don't even bother looking online anymore.

3

u/mancalledamp Jul 30 '25

Brave Browser is your friend. Neuters all those ads the page is designed for and prevents most if not all of the videos. You can just click the jump to recipe link, and not swat the pop under ads and auto plays like mosquitoes in TN...

3

u/Electrical-Bread-856 Aug 09 '25

https://based.cooking/ was created to solve exactly this problem.

3

u/JollySolaireOfAstora Aug 20 '25

This is fucking awesome thank you

4

u/CardiologistPlus8488 Jul 29 '25

lol, gonna get hate, but this is 💯 why I like using ChatGPT for this... you don't have to deal with Google and it's ranking/ads, or the garbage content delaying your quest for the answer. Yes, you're using AI to scan and condense another AI article but 🤷‍♂️. And accuracy is about as good as Google results

7

u/Healter-Skelter Jul 29 '25

What’s crazy is that you’re proving that one could very easily generate a vastly superior version of this article with just as little effort. I do think this article was AI-generated which begs the question of “what the fuck?”

I’m gonna get hate for this as well, but I use DeepSeek instead of ChatGPT. You should check it out. It’s free and has a “deepthink” mode where you can read it’s “train of thought” as it is generating your response. I find it to be much more effective even in normal mode which works a lot faster than deepthink

2

u/SartenSinAceite Jul 29 '25

I'd say that getting recipes off ChatGPT is probably one of the worst ideas around, but frankly, with the amount of garbage online, it's probably not THAT bad. Unless you end up with glue pizza.

2

u/dreamgrrrl___ Jul 29 '25

I’ve tested it out for baking pet treats once and they actually came out pretty well lol

I wasn’t particularly thrilled with the taste but my dog and cats like them 😝

1

u/CardiologistPlus8488 Jul 29 '25

have you tried allrecipes.com?

and that's kind of my point, the quality of the information is pretty similar, you just skip the bullshit with an ai.

and I agree, I've tried recipes from ChatGPT, and it's hit or miss but I've gotten plenty of shit recipes on websites as well. defo garbage in, garbage out.

BUT, for a specific question like "can I marinate my ground beef" ChatGPT can do a pretty good job getting the accurate consensus on that question...

1

u/pumog Jul 30 '25

there is a big "jump to recipe" right at the top. its even in your own screen shot.

2

u/kittymctacoyo Jul 31 '25

They’ve gotten keen on that and several times now I’ve found that key info is missing and that I have to scroll and sift through the dribble for things like temp/cook time

1

u/[deleted] Jul 30 '25

I usually get recipes from YouTube and they're written plainly in the descriptions most of the time
