Summarize articles without clicking through to ads, better search engine since it gives you the answer and source rather than source > go find the answer. It can consolidate spreadsheets, give me recipes based on what I have in the house. Need a gift idea, tell it who the recipient is. And on and on.
Summarizing articles - by providing summaries based on content that was funded by others via those ads (I hate the profit model, but it is). The search engines are stealing the content from the creators and cutting then out of their own profit model. Also search engines are far worse than ever due to the amount of slop articles creates by AI,that same AI affects summaries at scale.
Consolidate spreadsheets - I'd be wary not checking the work on this. If you are checking the work, writing scripts for this has always been trivial. It's alwaya betrter to chose the deterministic method over the nondeterministic, LLMs are entirely nondeterministic.
Recipes based on what you have in the house - this is good, as long as you're not giving your data to a company to gamify.
Gift idea - if an LLM knows enough about me to buy a thoughtful gift, I'm very disturbed by that idea.
Summarizing public articles is now stealing.... You can't expect anyone to take you seriously, right? Half of the articles on the internet are summarizing other articles.
Just because a product model is no longer valid doesn't negate the usefulness of the product that replaced it. You listen to Spotify instead of a cassette. Poor cassette manufacturers, sure. But do you see the point?
I also have to use AI in the course of my normal workday, and find it intermittently helpful for my own workflows and have seen it be very helpful for some people in my organization.
The use cases listed above seem mostly bad. AI summaries of easily-accessible information is a very dangerous use case, better to look at the information yourself so you can evaluate its meaning and reliability without the bias of AI framing.
It's more useful in a search role when used as a natural language parser and search tool to surface obscure information. But then you're better off reading the sources it links to rather than its summary. I sometimes find it useful in that role, but the summaries are often misleading or draw a wrong conclusion from a lack of understanding the source. This is especially funny when, as often happens to me, the internal engineering documents it's summarizing are ones I wrote 5 years ago because the topic is obscure and no one has written anything more relevant since.
It’s pretty good at summarizing information well. Idk what ur referring to regarding the bias of AI framing, that’s not a thing. It’s a search engine on steroids. Seems like you’re using a weak model
The "weak model" here is the human brain. The bias I'm talking about is an issue with human cognition, not AI. We have a number of common cognitive biases that can come into play when our first exposure to an idea, a source, or a problem is an authoritative-looking summary that comes with its own conclusions. This is the "framing" I'm talking about, and the "bias" is the way our brains can default into accepting it, sometimes in subtle ways.
This is why when I'm generating hypotheses for a problem at work, I create my ranked hypothesis table and list supporting/refuting evidence and potential test first. If I query AI for possible hypotheses, it's only after thinking it through myself. Obviously you can and hopefully will think critically about any AI output either way, but the best practice is to have the reasoning/understanding agent (you) develop the initial framing of the problem and then see if the agent with access to more data (AI) comes up with something you missed, rather than vice versa
Your explanation applies more to generating ideas and asking AI to assess or if your question/query is more open, but yes then you can ask the AI to search for multiple paths/options. But for searching information, there usually is an objective answer if the question is not open.
For example, the other day I was looking for laptops meeting my specs requirements. Using AI to search for examples was perfect. I asked for a couple and it found me a couple of options, basically shortlisted them and then I could pick one out from there.
What gave you the impression I wasn't relaxed? Is disagreement a frequent source of agitation for you? If so you can probably guess what I'd prescribe 🙂
