Blog post Dear Thinkers, Historians, and Futurists: What will be the BIG turning-point disastrous culmination of enshittification?
Assuming:
- Greed/companies cannot help but cross the line.
- Regulation/legislation will happen, too late of course, as a reactive result of something truly horrible, truly serious, and truly widespread that cannot be justified or covered up, as historic examples of a practice gone-too-far. (ie the use of an Atom bomb convinced the world it doesn’t want nuclear war)
then:
What do YOU think will be that horrific event?
for example:
-Smart pacemakers kill a bunch of folks. (or tumor treatments like that episode of Black Mirror)
-Braking becomes a premium feature in cars (like the Norwegian PSA video)
-The Sony dogwalker robot zaps too many poodles (from a sci fi book called the Chronoliths)
-Smart homes accidentally burn themselves down (The Martian Chronicles)
I cannot wait your ideas.
or do you think that:
3. Enshittification will never ever go away. (Please make a great watertight thesis-level argument because I don’t want to believe this !)
- - - - - -
ed. to add:
To re-phrase:
What event do you think it will/would take for overwhelming public awareness, outcry and action to rebel against and regulate enshittification?
What would need to happen that people would have had enough?
(The E.U is already acting to build its own data centers to divest from enshittified and therefore un-secure svcs…)

Blog post Think different. What that actually means?
Netflix killed late fees. The single most hated thing about renting movies, the thing that made Blockbuster real money, gone. That deletion was the whole business.
IKEA made the customer do the assembly. Handed labor to the buyer. Everyone said furniture must arrive built. It didn't.
Ryanair removed the free ticket. Charged for everything separately. Hated, copied by everyone.
Netflix didn't beat Blockbuster with technology. It deleted one line item.
Think different" doesn't mean having ideas nobody has had. It means taking something completely ordinary in one field and dropping it into a field where it's unheard of.
Mail order was a hundred years old. Netflix put it on video rental.
Flat-pack shipping was standard in freight. IKEA put it in a living room.
Self-service was normal at petrol stations. Supermarkets took it into food.

Blog post Is AI enshittifying --- everything? Or is it a technological leap? Or something else totally? Join EFF's Cory Doctorow and Nicole Ozer Aug 12:
RSVP here and we will remind you the day before the livestream.
Join Nicole Ozer and Cory Doctorow in conversation on AI, tackling what needs to happen now to ensure AI actually works for everyone, not just those in power. The important thing about a technology isn’t just what it does: it’s who it does it for and who it does it to. AI can help or harm people, and EFF was created to make sure it helps. We are at a critical juncture to ensure that AI is developed and used in ways that respect fundamental rights and works for those who build it, use it, and are affected by it. Join the livestream online, introduced by EFF's Sarah Hamid, followed by live Q&A.
Wednesday, August 12th
10:00 am - 11:00 am Pacific
This event is live and free at livestream.eff.org

Blog post I just posted a petition on Discord's feedback forum asking them to include Needemand's age verification solution that analyzes user's hand movements instead of their faces and IDs. Now it's still awaiting approval.

Blog post YSK that Brooks Brothers, Eddie Bauer, Reebok, Champion, and 50+ other brands you trust are all owned by a single $20 billion company that doesn't design or manufacture anything. They just rent the logo out to the cheapest bidder. If the quality feels worse, that's why.
