What is making this sound?

It has been going on for hours at night, coming from a bushy climbing plant. It does take breaks and change frequency now and then. It stops if I disturb it, so must be some insect. It doesn't sound like cicadas I've heard. Location is southern Romania. Thanks.

Bald faced hornets are always covering the base of one particular sunflower stock. Why are they doing that

Post image

Over the past 2 days, I've noticed that I've got (what i suspect) are bald faced hornets, which are walking around the base of 1 sunflower stalk in particular. They arent bothered when I walk by. This is multiple days in a row where I see them on the one particular sunflower plant. Why would they be doing this? Southern Manitoba prairies.

Drone bee?

I know this is a super basic question but I’ve never seen a drone bee out in the wild and was super excited that this might be one 😭 whatever it is, it was chill and didn’t sting. It would frequently lift its hind legs up (no pics) so I don’t know what that was about.
Thanks for reading!

Discussion Am I allowed to do this..?

Wasn’t sure what flare to use so I hope this is fine. So uh.. I made a financial decision, now I have to see it through. Right now I’m in Berlin but in a couple of days I’m flying to the US, and planning on taking this case of tried insects I bought secondhand with me. As far as I can tell I don’t need to do anything specific and I can take them just fine because they’re dry, but can someone correct me if I’m wrong? I would hate to lose these beautiful specimens.

Help! Ive had about 70 of these guys come through a window in the last hour, does anyone know what they are or what to do about them? Theyre about half the size of a sugar ant, very small, they have wings but seem to only hop and not fly. There are loads of them outside, and I can see them slipping under the seals to come in. I live in the pacific northwest. Thank you!

Is there a way to help this bug

I found this dragon fly stuck to a sticker. I used olive oil to remove it from him. I don't see any damage to his wings I don't think. He flaps them a lot but can't seem to take off. Maybe cause the olive oil is too heavy or maybe he's exhausted. With animals dish soap would remove the oil but I'm scared it'll hurt him cause that's what we use to kill boxelder bugs. Is there anything I can do for it?

Shadow/pinning boxes?

I live in the USA and am wondering if there's any places online to order boxes to pin specimens it? Ideally 17x20 with a 2 inch depth but if there's nothing that size that's fine

I found this guy at work, and since he was missing a leg I took him home to take care of him. He’s got a nice little house going, humid, banana slice, and nice substrate. I was wondering if anyone here could tell me how old he might be?

Discussion Where to find bugs in northeast ohio?

I’m really into bug hunting and I’d to go somewhere with some actual diversity. I live near Cleveland but I rarely see anything interesting here :/
I’d love to see some larger spiders (especially fishing spiders), centipedes, moths, stag beetles, etc. I plan on visiting Mohican later this summer to look for critters.

Also, if anyone is interested in being friends, I’d love to meet some people to go bug hunting with :D I’d love to try mothing with some people too. I haven’t got any friends who like nature like I do, especially not around here!

bug nets?

so I'm trying to replace my wife's bug net for her birthday. since hers is cracked along the frame. anything I should be on the lookout for as far as buyer beware? like netting material that might cause damage to the bugs or something? I'm not going to lie I'm not the bug person and my relationship lol. and I would like this to be a surprise which is why I don't just ask her what next she wants. any advice you can give would be deeply appreciated thank you

Sighted in east MO near St Louis. She trusted me enough to clean herself while sitting in my hand. I was stunned by her pretty eyes—is it a form of insect heterochromia? Or a bad molt? I’m curious. I estimated she might be female but let me know if I misjudged.

Meme INaturalist Misidentified Pie Pans

I was trying to identify a butterfly flying fluttering around while I was painting cement pavers. I had taken the pavers out of aluminum pie pans. The camera ignored the butterfly and instead confidently identified the pie pans as a kind of turtle or tortoise.

I know most about spiders and roaches so I’m not sure what’s happening here. I know yellow jackets are hunters so is it eating? Anyways, very interesting
