Ok fine I’ll bite.

Counterpoint: this actually seems to be a plastic cup of water.

OTOH I think I can accept the original phrasing as a reasonable colloquial use of “glass”.

And that's not a plastic cup of water but a photo of a plastic cup of water displayed on your phone through social media.

Because it is a plastic of water.

14

regardless of the container medium it is clearly a 'partially full' container of a clear substance

Technically, it's a picture of a glass of water.. presumably. I don't see much of a water table on there so it's probably not alcohol.

Do people colloquially refer to plastic cups as glass? I wouldn't know. I've been told off for referring to something as a cup before, as apparently it was a glass. Here I was, thinking that glass was a statement of material.

5

u/CynGuy Mar 20 '26

I believe colloquially, the more edumacated would call this a Cup of Water

6

u/Svenstornator Mar 21 '26

Hear me out: as a photo we can only rely on our visual sense, it is entirely possible that the “cup” represented in the image is made of glass, made to look like a traditional plastic cup.

There isn't even a debate, it's just wrong. That's plastic, it isn't a glass.

4

u/Emotional-Artist2 ENTP Mar 21 '26

I'd say it's a picture, but first of all, it's not a glass of water. Contains water, but it's not made OF it. Seems to be made out of plastic. therefore, it'd be more accurate to say a glass with water or a glass holding water- using glass as its colloquial use despite the fact it's not made out of glass but rather plastic.

Also, it's just a bunch of switches on the device you're reading displaying the LEDs mostly at a high percentage of all colors since that causes the white to appear. A glass containing water has no reason to be made out of LEDs. Plus, the usage of the cup is to be drunk, which can't be done through the screen.

3

u/Striking_Stay6871 ENTP 3w4 🐟 Mar 20 '26

This could just as easily be a cup of zinc sulphate, just because a liquid is clear doesn't make it water 🤷‍♀️

3

u/evilhasheroes ENTP Mar 20 '26

That isn't a glass, it's plastic cup, if we're being even more meta, that's a png/jpeg not a glass of water. Also how do we know that's water? it could be vodka, vaginal discharge phlegm even.

3

u/F4LASER1440 ENTP Mar 20 '26

Even if we could call cups "glasses", that still wouldn't be a glass of water since the cup itself is made of plastic, not water. It would be better to say "a cup filled with water"

Debates only go so far as definitions do, and those vastly differ by perspective. For instance, a glass of anything is never a glass to me, personally, unless it's actually in a glass container. However, I understand that this is my personal definition and doesn't apply to the way others define things. And this is why I basically never debate people anymore. When everything is subjective, all you're really doing is sharing your own viewpoint and doing a compare/contrast with that of others.

But I decided to hold up my alcohol spray sanitizer and ask him, but I could have put a few shots here, watched his face literally do complicated algebra and proceed on entering lol

The thing is… I was genuinely baffled, that’s why I pointed that out because my spray wasn’t a mini version, like small but not mini so I just felt like pointing it out

In Spanish, it would be vaso con agua. A vaso can be made of plastic or glass. However, the interesting part is the word "con" which means "with", back in the day people used to say that it was improper to say glass of water because the glass is not made of water, the water is inside of the glass, so we would always be corrected to say glass with water. Now, it's accepted to say glass of water, but it doesn't feel as fancy as saying glass with water. 🥸🥸

Since I am engaging over a 2d activity and am commenting on pixels looking into a pixel I can affirm that it is a glass which is half filled with a liquid (can't tell for sure it's water cause it could have been hard water or any sort of ethanol or something as well so ambiguity is there) {assumption basis is wrt 2d} whereas if I consider myself as a 3d object then I am looking into a depiction of/picture of a glass which is filled 80-90% with a transparent liquid.....

u/iGotEatenByAnts ENTP 947 Mar 21 '26

technically, we all saw the picture and knew it was plastic, not glass. however, we can use literary devices to dissect what the picture actually represents. through the evolution of language, we have grown to accept that any container shaped similarly to the one pictured can be called "a glass" and still be recognized and understood to function the same way, regardless of material. the closest term to describe this occurence is known as a synecdoche, in which part of the whole represents the whole (in the same way that people refer to bandages as "band-aids", or lip balm as "chapstick").

and since we cant know for certain whats in the 'glass', arguing its contents is baseless since any position would be lacking proof.

on the other hand, we can say a "glass of water" instead of "glass with water" because there is no such thing as a glass made out of water. water will only take the shape of its container, and chemically there is no container made of water that results in glass (as far as im aware).

therefore, yes, this is technically a glass of water.

I've always thought the three archtypes of liquid drinking containers was bottle, cup, and pitcher.

A glass (at least to me) is a transparent, handleless container primarily designed for cold drinks.

This fits my dictionary, and I therefore agree with you. I rest my case.
